done? I'm thinking of going to a beauty school to get my next relaxer. Do you think this is wise or unwise? On one hand, I like that the students are supervised, but on the on the other hand, they don't have a lot of experience. What do you ladies think?

Hi Tee,

As long as their work is being supervised by a teacher, i wouldn't have a problem with it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif (wash&set)

No way hosea! Sorry but I am not comfortable with anyone "learning" on my hair. Come too long and too far to turn back now! Had a bad experience with a "new graduate" once who burned me badly because she was in experienced. Sometimes (as several people on the board have noted) even the so called experienced ones don't k now what they are doing much less the ones that are learning.

For washing, and wet sets, okay, but I would never let them use any type of chemical or heat application on my hair.

Just my opinion anyway.

I'm with you there. My hair is to fine and sensitive to have some amateur practicing on it..

Re: Would you go to a beauty school to get your ha

Heheheheehee!

I heard that! I wouldn't go there for a relaxer, but maybe a wash and wrap. I hate curlers and blow dryers!

I used to go to a beauty school for touch-ups when I lived in Atlanta. I think it was called "Samverly"... I never had any problems. My old stylist moved to CA and recommended I go there and request an advanced student. That's where she went to school. I never let them cut my hair, though...

I personally wouldn't let them cut, colour or relax my hair. Scissors and chemicals stay away. A wash and set yes, but I've worked very hard to get this far without wanting to experience any setbacks at the sake of saving a little money. I'd probably end up spending more to sort it out.

In this instance, stick with whatever is working best for you in the touch up department.

I agree with the poster who said only for a wash and set. Actually a lot of salons employ student hairdressers to shampoo, condition, rinse relaxer, etc.
As for cutting my hair or applying relaxer or colour, I would have to say no.

I must agree that I wouldn't let them put a relaxer in my hair. I know that everyone has to start somewhere but I would prefer for it not to be on my head. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Come on Ladies,

Y'all ain't got no love for the students? (little slang there /images/graemlins/tongue.gif)
You guys are a tough bunch! Not even a wash and set! Well, I guess the schools better start manufacturing more dolls to work on, because there not going to get much help from the ladies on this board. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do understand though. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've gone in the past (like years ago) and it was a scary experience. They relaxed half my head, then rinsed. Then they did the other half. It turned out okay. It wasn't under/overprocessed that's for sure. They are very well supervised. Come to think of it, I've had scarier experiences, paid more and lost my hair /images/graemlins/grin.gif!!!

Are you kidding? I barely trust the professionals, now I'm going to let some "I wanna be a cosmotology student" do my hair?...NOT /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Aww I'm beginning to feel sorry for these poor students. No one wants to get their hair done by them.

LMAO Maybe that's why most of these hairdressers we complain about are so bad cause the sensible women like ourselves didn't let them practice on us.

Oh my Gosh, NEVER I mean NEVER go to a beauty school. I guess it was kinda my fault for trying to try new things but my girlfriend recommended that I go to the school to get my ends trimmed. When I got there a wash and trim PLUS the style was $10, so I was like, "What the hey?". All the stylists in there were white and then I noticed a Mixed stylist in the back, needless to say they paired me uop with her and we were off. I could tell by the way she handled my hair that she didn't have much experience with African-American hair, she wasn't rough, just the opposite, like she was afraid the naps were going to bite her or something. Long story short, I came outta there looking like Sophia from the Golden Girls. I cryed all the way home....oh, did I mention it was Valentines Day?

lol...now you may have something there londondiva. Perfect practice makes perfect and if you don't practice.....
