Would you let a different race relax your hair?

Excluding Dominicans. Like would oou go to a salon that doesn't have any AA stylists but they have someone who has lots of experience doing relaxers? I ask this because I have my old stylist who was pretty good but now that I know more about hair like incorporating the protein step before neutralizing, she doesn't want to listen to me. She thinks the longest I should wait for a touch up is 8 weeks.
I called a JC Penny salon because my cousin found a black stylist at the one near her, but their person who does relaxers is white. She's been doing them for awhile, so it would not be her first time. I'm thinking about going to her because I think she might be more open to listening to me about my hair. I also feel like she might be less likely to want to leave the relaxer on. IDK. What ya'll think?

of course she doesn't think you should stretch! she wants to see your money more often. when i was relaxed i got the same line from EVERY stylist. i'm sure many others have experienced the same old line.

as for the question, i had a white woman do my weaves. she was fantastic, but braided too tight like the rest. so it just depends on the stylist and how much exp they have with our hair.

good luck in your search

I would have to see pics of his or her work. I know many black stylists who style the hair of other races...so yeah..

I have. An Asian lady years ago. I was desperate. I had just moved down to DC an there were no Dominican salons and I refused to go back to a black salons.. especially when I relented and went and 1 chick left some relaxer in my hair ..it was discovered while she was rollersetting..smh. anyway the Asian lady wasn't to bad..lol

absolutely! if they had experience and knew how to properly care for my hair type and texture, and was willing to help me reach my hair goals. You'd be surprised how many other races relax their, and I'm not talking about traditional Becky perms either.

I have. I used to go to a salon in the mall. A white stylists did my relaxers. She was actually one of the best I ever had. It came out very nice and my scalp never burned. I didn't have to wait because she didn't overbook. The reason I stopped going is because my hair was very short and she couldn't curl my hair properly. Relaxed perfectly but she wasn't able to style my short hair.

I have. Twice. They were very gentle with my hair & I had good results. I also plan on self relaxing from now on, and I'll have my white friend help me with the back to cut down on overlap. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to do a touch up.

Yes, I would. Back when I was relaxed I had a couple of sistas that mucked my hair up, so clearly race is not a pre-req for correct and proper relaxer application.

With everything I know now, the person who would relax my hair would be whomever I deemed as the best person, regardless of race.

My old stylist was white and did my relaxers. She was very knowledgeable and had a lot of experience with black hair. She actually really cared about my hair, and my hair flourished. Unfortunately she was good friends with my sister, so when they had a personal falling out everyone else in my family did lol When I stopped going, there was a bit of a decline in my hair health..So definitely the best hair stylist I ever had.

....Are you talking about the Southland Mall JC Penney's...? 'Cause I see you're in the bay...And I used to go there...

But if not, you can ignore this lol!

Italians know how to deal with curly hair ,other than that i didn't have very good experiences :/

No. I had a bad experience once with a white woman. She acted as if she was afraid of my hair when she applied the relaxer, not really parting the thick 12 weeks of NG I had. Because of the lack of parting, she completely underprocessed my TEXLAXED hair, complained that the comb didn't go through it well enough, gave me a half done frizzy blowdry and flat iron, and then told me to come back in 4 weeks so she could reapply the relaxer to my roots and get it straighter. :perplexed

She seemed to be trying to treat my hair like they treat their hair. I just think it's easier for someone with similar hair texture to understand what your hair needs.

as long as they had experience I am good. I wouldn't allow an unexperienced person of any race relax my hair. I know one has to learn, Just not on me! :perplexed :look:

Lol. Nope
I'd have to see her/him do a relaxer on someone else first before I think about letting him/touch my hair.
They can give me a cut though.

I agree with the bolded. Considering the fact that I don't know many people aside from spanish and AA who do relaxers and black hair in general, I'd had to see them use another client as an example and then I'd ask the client about their experience.

Back when I had a relaxer, I had white women relax my hair at Walmart (don't judge me) and at the Aveda Institute.

The walmart lady did an excellent job on my hair. I also went to her for straw sets to stretch my relaxers. She did whatever I asked, and I never had any problems with her.

I'm not even going to speak on the horrible relaxer experience I had in Puerto Rico. Luckily I found a Dominican shop there eventually.

Aveda was more of a crap shoot. One of the times I went, they had 2 students working so they could get all the relaxer applied in time. One girl was slower than the other, so one side was under-processed :look: I wasn't mad at them, because I knew what I was getting into by coming there. Luckily they have a free re-do policy, so I came back a month later to get it fixed.

If I ever relaxed again, I would allow non-black ppl to do it. In general I found their application and technique to be much more neat with little to no overlapping.

I went to dominicans before. The relaxers were awesome but the heat ugh!!!! I stopped almost 5 months ago cause she was using too much heat.

I just saw her yesterday in walmart. It was soo akward, me and my sis were trying to speed up the convo so she wouldnt ask about our hair or why we stopped coming lol

When she was doing my hair she told me I couldn't stretch a relaxer I'm proving her wrong now. I wish I knew when my last relaxer was so I could tell you weeks post.

Yep.:yep:

I've had 2 White Guys that were Top Notch in their Industry that only had Black Clients.

Their Relaxing, Cutting, Blow Drying, Flat-Ironing skills were all great.

When I was relaxed yes... I went to a Puerto Rican lady for awhile. She gave me great relaxers no overlapping. I tried this white lady once but she overlapped too much. But her rollersets were "THE BOMB".

Yep, I have. A Korean woman relaxed me when I was stationed there and a Turkish man when I was deployed there. They both were very very skilled and they always had a gang of folks waitin' on them to do their hair. Noteworthy tidbit, they both rollersetted me and blew out my roots aka Dominican blowout.

Back in Cuba, yes. There are so many black people that all the white stylists have been doing black hair for years anyways.

Here in Canada, an emphatic NO. I don't think white stylists have had enough experience doing black hair, and having had one client doesn't count. I'm considering going to a colombian lady, but again, she has had experience with black hair, as so many colombians are black. My friends go to her, and they say she is good.
