I saw this news story and wow. This is scary. She claimed that she used this relaxer called Sheenique. I've never heard of it but it looks like a drugstore brand no lye relaxer. She said she left it on for 10 minutes and when she went to rinse it out her hair came out with it. She said she tried to neutralize immediatetly but it didn't stop the hair from coming out. The manufacturer is disputing her claims saying that she misapplied it or didn't neutralize properly. She has hired a lawyer to sue the company. Interesting thing is at the end of the newspiece they said her sister used the half of the same relaxer kit earlier that day on her own hair and she didn't have any problems.

I just saw that and wow. I feel bad for her but something tells me this isnt the relaxer's fault. I DOUBT she left it on for only 10mins. And it costs only $5? what did she expect? You got what you paid for.

Strand test are definetly important and she should have used a well known brand, but if her sister didn't have a problem maybe she did do something wrong, maybe. Let's just hope she find this site or one like it.

It really doesn't pay to use "off brands" sometimes. Particularly when its something as risky as a relaxer which isn't to say it couldn't happen with a name brand but at least its a big corporation with more to lose and more to sue for too. We'll never know if she left it on for the recommended time either. It's a shame she lost her hair. Another reason to be happy to be natural....

This was one of the best relaxers I had ever used when relaxed, especially the conditioner that came with it. It was very gentle on my scalp, but it was so hard to find that I had to find another brand. I wonder if she just had an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients and wasn't aware

I used to use sheenique when I was in college, I liked their products then, I didnt know they still were in business.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't put anything called "Sheenique" on my head. That sounds bootleg. WTF is that about??!?! Poor woman...

ugh.

Looking at those pictures, I noticed that the hair that was left seems like it was relaxed bone straight. Her hair looks really fine too. The nape photo and front hair line photo really show how straight it is.

Not saying that the particular brand of relaxer is blameless, it just looks to me that she left it on a whole lot longer than 10 minutes.

If it were accidental, a strand test and using the product as per the instructions could have saved her hair.

I feel really bad for her.

I used to use whatever no-name relaxer (back when I used chemicals). I didn't really know there was a difference, and I try to save money when possible. I'm sorry this happened to her... and I'm glad I'll never use chemicals again. If my hair fell out I think I would go straight insane after all this work I put into it.

One of the reasons I'm soooooo afraid of relaxers. I really think that those of you who do relax/texlax are really brave!

She is going to have a problem with them saying they are the blame because her sister used the same product from the same box and she had no problem.

It was interesting that they mentioned there have only been 151 complaints about relaxers, that is an incredibly low number.

Poor woman. Whether it's her fault or not, I still feel for her. I was reading the comments on that page as well. A lot of them are flaming her for not loving her natural hair. I didn't no so many people felt that way, but maybe they have a point. Either way, chemicals are risky, and unfortunately for this woman, they backfired on her :(

People should flame her because she wants to wear her hair straight. That is none of anybodies business.

As for the relaxer, that is an old school relaxer that was out way back in the day. I didn't know they still made it. She may have been using an old batch or she could have had already damaged hair and applying the relaxer made it worse. Either way, she may need to go and see a dermatologist and really pamper her hair and scalp.

I'm thinking maybe she had applied another relaxer on her hair before the Sheenique one and then tried to apply the Sheenique too soon after. The overprocessing could definitely produce that kind of hair loss. I've heard of people putting on relaxers within a few days of each other just because one didn't take.

Wow! That's scary! That's what happened to my hair years ago and it was with a "so-called" professional. That's one of the reasons why I don't use chemicals.

My sister used sheenique products back in the 90s for a short while. I thought they went out of business.

:lachen:Your post had me cracking up for some reason. Its like I actually heard you saying it.

I believe she must have left it on longer than that as well. I'm sure it wasn't 10 minutes from start to finish. She probably didn't figure in the application time into her process.

I thought so too.
