Well, I TRIED to go Red....(pics)

I wanted vibrant red, but I got:

The roots are kinda a decent color, but it gets progressively darker/browner as it goes from root to tip.

Any coloristas have any suggestions on how to fix? Any brand or color name suggestions? Ideas?

I figured I'd wait a week or two and then re-color and if I fail again I'd just go to the salon. (Which is what I'm trying to avoid)


ETA: I used textures & tones ruby rage, and this look is result of a twistout from 7 twists

Clairol makes hair dyes for dark hair only. They come on brown, blonde, and red shades. From what I hear, the reds are really vibrant. You can buy it at the beauty supply store. You can find the instructions on the website.

Also, to avoid "hot roots", when dying your hair a lighter shade you must start at least an inch away from your scalp.

if you want more red.... i would try "Jazzing's" red hott <--- rinse

it is very red, acts much like a permanent over a dye (personally i would go from tips to 1 inch away from roots) while it processes.... and then hit the roots LAST

(a stylist on here may help more).... i wish i had pics of that but it is a fierce color

eta: from my experiences.... the shorter the period of time between a rinse (application) and a "chemical process" ....the better the rinse takes (color deposit) and lasts (acting as a permanent)<-- so i've always used this principle

likely why all of my former stylists would apply rinses in the salon on relaxer day

You're probably right! I'm going to straighten in a couple weeks to do my first self trim, so hopefully I'll dig it straight....but i barely wear my hair straight so I was hoping for something that looked vibrant on my curls. Don't be jelly, buy some dye!

Thanks, I am really thinking about the damage like someone else mentioned, the jazzing suggestion above seems like a great option cuz it's a rinse.

Once you initially put a color on your hair, it takes skill to lighten it up. Your at about a level 6 now and you want to go redder.Depending on how porous your hair is you may try a Maxtrix color and add a very very small amount of bleach to the color mix to add in lifting so that you can get a more maximum result. hmmm, I would suggest that you go to a professional. But personally I love that color, its beautiful.

The reason why your roots are lighter is because of the direct heat from the scalp lifted the color faster.....heat (hood dryer with plastic cap) is your friend with color because heat opens up the cuticle and alllows levels to be taken up and color to be deposited in the cortex layer of the hair shaft...As far as starting from a inch from the roots its not really necessary with color (on a virgin app) because a color usually reaches max processes after 45 mins any way, meaning that it wont go past the color that it is, a level 7 color wont process past a level 7 but it can under develop for different reasons, the main factor is even application and heat distribution..... . also when you do a color you (because you have so much hair) you may want to mix 2- 3 boxes of whatever brand you get so that you get full even coverage, once box is NOT enough for the amount of hair you have...... but I will warn you that once you already deposit a color onto your hair it becomes harder and requires a bit more skill to lift it, especially when you deal with warm red hues.

You can give it one more try, it wont hurt, although I suggest as always when dealing with chemicals like color to go to a color specialist because they have a whole range of toners/demi, glosses,semi and perm colors and most dye jobs require mixing of 2-3 different colors plus they understand the undertones and chemical components. Anywho Matrix, Redken, and Igora (my personal favorite with African American hair) are good lines if your are licensed or if you decide to go to a salon find one that carries these lines are very consistently good and reliable lines.

Also, when dealing with colors, to get to certain levels you need a stronger developer, a 20 volume may not get you to your desired level. Also, box color tends to dry the hair more so really stay on top of your moisture. Ok, I'm babbling and feel myself wanting to do a whole lecture because color is my thing lol

WOW! Thanks!! OK, i used 3 boxes, and i thought i saturated everything but i guess not. I will try using a plastic bag and heat when i redye. what's level 6 level 10, a 20 volume and how do i find out about that stuff?

This reminds me of a very bright henna red on dark hair but noticeable in darker lighting, not just in sunlight. I actually like very much and yes it is nice on your skin tone.
