what made you decide to no longer rely on stylist to do your hair?

Because nobody will be as careful & take as much time with my hair as I will.

In cosmetology schools, stylists learn how to make hair look good... But they usually don't study the science of healthy hair.

Most that I've encountered are scissor happy.

And lastly, I hardly ever use heat on my hair & I've yet to meet a stylist (aside from one that does dreads or braids) that doesn't work with heat.

Ripping through my hair with fine toothed combs, leaving relaxer on much longer than necessary, cutting more than previously agreed, the usual afflictions!

Basically my hair started to grow when I stopped going to salons. :look:
 
I remember my old stylist. I had done about 4 years without going there anymore.then, I started missing getting my hair done and I loved the area etc. So I decided to go back and get my hair done. I went there twice that year. This time, not sure...i was told that i needed to get 1 inch trimmed off. I didnt feel confortable. I told the person that I wanted to get my ends dust off...and it seems like a lot more was cut off. My stylist appeared to be nice when face to face but the minute im not around....not the same story.

On top of that the gossip:perplexed...it kind of put me off. I also noticed that both time i went the same clients where there. i'm not talking about 1 or 2 ...about all of them except one person.:ohwell: It was not the case prior to that particular year. not sure what to make of it. I'm thinking of keeping my money in my pocket and simply doing my own hair again. Plus, i always took my appointment at the same time, same day.

Tired of not being able to plan out activities on the days I went to the salon because I didn't know how long the divas were going to take.
 
Because they handle my hair hair aggressively, my hair could be tangled and they use a rat teeth comb and they rub a towel on their vigorously and wonder why it's so tangled. Freaking idiots, my hair don't never get that tangled when I do it myself ever!!!! Sorry for yelling I got a but upset lol
 
O yeah and always suggesting a trim and me staying the same length for years when I should of been at least waist length by now
 
And stylist is the cause of me having thin ends. First it was they didn't leave it on long enough and I went to someone else and they comb the relaxed all the way through twice because the second time I noticed and now I have thin ends
 
25 years of stylists and salons and literally THOUSANDS of dollars poorer. When I decided no more my hair hadn't retained one inch. And was unhealthy as it's ever been.
 
And lets not talk about TIME. A wash, DC, and set should take 1.5hrs?

But ya'll know how it is. Walk in at 9am. Walk out at 3pm. And hair 3 inches shorter and heat damaged somehow. If you're lucky.

Because no ones will care for my hair as much as or as well as I do. Most stylist focus on making the hair look good and not keeping the hair healthy. I went natural and there weren't many stylist at the time who specialized in that.
My main reasons though are because I wanted to learn how to properly care for my own hair and wanted to be independent with my routine. I grew tired of having to let someone else do everything for me and it was becoming expensive.
I now see salon visits as a treat, similar to go to the spa, and not a necessity. :)
 
they are scissor happy, they gossip too much, they tell you anything to get (extra) money, some have nasty attitudes, too expensive...and last but not least....they wont take care of my hair like me :)
 
Both times I had serious damage done to my hair was at the hands of stylists. When my hair was breaking and nothing they did was allowing my hair to progress I started doing my own research on hair care. My hair is FINALLY getting back on track now & I'm excited to see progress. My hair looked terrible before I found LHCF and I was seeing my hairdresser weekly.
 
I started doing it myself because they were scissor happy and I was tired of spending hours in a chair.
My hair has never been healthier.
 
I stopped after having dd because there was no way that I was going to bring her with me or leave her for 6+ hours to be in a place flipping through old magazines, watching soaps and judge shows that I have no interest in. Man I remember being so bored and agitated it felt like I was dying a slow death:nono: Then when I left my hair would be like a helmet because of all the grease she put in...even though I told her that I didn't want any:perplexed: There was so much I disliked about the salon..argh, the attitude of the other patrons or the old lady sitting beside you making conversations or the man coming in trying to sell you his junk oh and the stylist taking her break to eat for what seems like forever or feeling a need to offer to pick her up some food when you leave to go get something for your starving belly! Geez...maybe I was just going to the wrong place:perplexed: House of Nix08 serves me just fine now:grin:

in 20 yrs I have yet to find one I trust, so from now on i'll be doing my hair myself and when my hair gets WL I'll consider letting them touch me up but only after doucing my hair in EVOO the day prior and day of and they will not be allowed to pick up Scissors near my hair.
 
I was spending way too much money for them to never do what I asked them to!

Hmmmm good question. I have always watched how they did my hair and duplicated that style at home. But me not relying on stylists came at the same time when the first hair forums were out (late 90's). And the whole Wanakee thing of dusting/light trimming of the ends.

I found I could do my hair better than going to a salon. The last time I went to a salon was only for a trim back in 2002. The last time I went for full service must have been in 1995 or so. Can't recall.
 
I got tired of putting in a full-day-of-work worth of time to get my hair done. I love my stylist, but the salon has no respect for people's time and often over books her with appointments.

Only one stylist has ever done my hair since I first got a relaxer and she's now in her sixties and quitting soon, so...
 
Whenever I went to the salon I'd get complaints about having too much hair. I got tired of people telling me to get a relaxer.

The longer my hair grew, the more complaints I received. I don't want anyone putting their bad vibes on my noggin LOL

I was going to a stylist that claimed that she had growing hands and was paying her a pretty penny for her to relax my hair ( $90 plus setting, trimming, and styling were extra). Sadly, my hair was not getting longer or even looked remotely healthy in fact, it looked like the hair under someone's arm minus the deodorant balls. I then realized that even with my furry son's non-existent hairdressing skills that he probably could have done a better job with his eyes closed. I decided that I would begin from scratch and shaved everything off in the interim I would take care of my own hair until I found a competent hairdresser… 6 year later and I am still taking care of my own hair.
 
After relocating, I was on another hunt for a stylist. Found one at a natural hair salon: she was late and running behind, she rushed through my hair, and I overpaid for a **** job. I also got tired of going to salons for just a simple weave install, and having to go home and re-do it. Whats the point of bring a clear picture if you arent going to follow what I want?

That was the final straw for me. I am still learning the ins and outs of being my own stylist, but its cheaper and more fulfilling. If I can master cornrowing, ill be in business.

I moved to a place where there weren't any black stylists/salons so I had no choice but to take matters into my own hands.
 
I honestly can't even think of what I'd want a salon to do.:ohwell: I don't use shampoo, and I seriously doubt they have any cleansing conditioners there. They're not gonna wash in sections, and I don't use any heat so that's out the window....

They can't do anything, that I can't do better. I keeps my money in my pocket, and my hair on my head! :yep:
 
I was getting a touch up and it started to burn badly. I mentioned that my scalp was starting to burn and instead of rushing me to the wash bowl, I was asked if I wanted to leave it in longer.

:perplexed


That cemented my thoughts that these folks don't know what they are doing and I was done after that.
