Anyone get their hair done at a beauty school?

What was your experience? Is your hair still intact?

I have limited funds and just scheduled an appointment to get my hair and makeup done at a local beauty school. I am extremely nervous about it and need someone to calm my nerves with stories of their experiences and inside knowledge!

Yep. Back in the day. My mom didn't want to do my hair so a wash and set for $5 was a good deal for her.

Most of the ladies who did my hair already did hair at home so the styles came out looking great. I think I even got a relaxer there... The senior students did it. Shoot, my mom used to do my relaxer and smooth it from root to tip.. Ugh, so anything was an improvement for me. Also the instructors are usually critiquing from behind so they are really giving you their best!!
 
Yes. Good experience always. Howe c et once I got this white student and she was so scared of my hair it looked OK after but her timidly handling my hair got annoying. Try to see a students clientele before writing your name down. Some students have loyal clients even though they're just students and you c a new see the health of their hair
 
Thank you so much girls! This definitely helps! I'm just really nervous that they won't know what to do with my natural hair. But the guy on the phone seemed to be pretty confident about it.

I'm going to the Paul Mitchell Lab in NJ.
 
yup I went to a school with my mother and my grandma ma and the expierince was ok until my grandma woke up the next day with her neck burned up from the left behind perm:nono: .... I was in shock! not only at the fact that they didn't properly wash her hair out but due to the fact my grandmother didn't feel that perm burning her skin.

I don't think I'll ever go to another one!

Now this scares me! I wouldn't be getting any chemical services done though.
 
I used to go all the time years ago. I would only get a shampoo and rollerset, never any cuts or chemicals. I always figured, they have to know how to rollerset to pass state boards. I always took my own products though. The school only gave them small cups of products (like a mouthwash cup) to use on each client and it was not nearly enough imo.

The students would always be happy to do my hair because they said their regulars were always old ladies, kids, or people with jacked up hair. They always did a nice job.

ETA...I forgot I used to take DD also, more recently. Now that is a whole 'nother story. She was natural then. I used to watch them like a hawk. I could tell they were intimidated about doing her natural hair (it was massive). Didn't know how to properly detangle, etc. I would go right on up to them and instruct them on how I wanted it done (nicely of course). Most were always willing to take direction.

It's been several years now, and it seems like everybody is natural. I don't think you'll have a lot to worry about. If you see them about to do something you are unsure about, stop, and ask questions or suggest another way of doing it. :yep:

I went once when I was younger. That chick burned my ear so bad while curling my hair and then had the nerve to say "what are you crying for girl?" :rolleyes: Yeah my mom was not happy when she picked me up lol But my hair did look nice though.
 
I tried it out & wouldn't again - the products were all in industrial-sized, unbranded containers. I asked if I could bring in my own instead of using theirs, but was told no. I tried it anyway because it was just a $5 wash & curl, but the products left my hair hangin' instead of swangin', and the curls were gone before I walked out. I ended up just rewashing the next day.

This one lady keeps asking if she could do my hair (she's a student at Paul Mitchell) but now I'm worried about not having enough conditioner! :lol: Since its PM, I doubt I can bring my products from a different brand. Ill ask her how much product can she use.
 
Bad and good experiences.

Bad the first time because i had a girl who didn't wash my hair properly, didn't dc OR detanglemy hair. She somehow managed to cut her finger trimming my hair. :wallbash: Since she was incapacitated the instructor took over and started gushing about how beautiful and curly my hair was because she saw me looking pissed lol. The instructor then proceeds to detangle my hair with a spray bottle filled with water and a FINETOOTH comb smh. This was the last time I let someone abuse my hair, had to get 2" taken off after that so-called trim.

Good because my friend was getting her hair done by someone at the same school and it always looked nice so I would only go to her and didn't have any complaints.
I still see her, but only for a braid base to do crochet braids.
 
Yes:

Recently (about a year ago for T/U's) I went about 3-4 times

Each time I asked for a Senior Student (one getting ready to Graduate). I only allowed her/them to Relax and Neutralize me. They also put on a Conditioner.

I put on a Plastic Cap & Scarf and finished up the rest at home.

Overall, my experiences were decent. The Students took their time and did exactly what I asked them to do. They seem to be knowledgeable. Followed orders well.

If I get in a 'pinch' for someone to do my Touch Up(s) again I would certainly go back.

ETA: They used Affirm Mild Lye on me and 5n1 for my Mid-Step and Affirm's Neutralizing Shampoo. (Which I am still using)

They also had Design Essentials.

I think the key for me was getting someone several practical hours from Graduating.
 
When I lived in Oakland I used to go because my friend went there. There were a bunch of black women in there who already knew how to do hair anyway. When my friend graduated I still went. My hair used to be laid for the low! At the one I used to go to, all the people who did the public's hair are close to graduating anyway.
 
I go to the beauty school all the time! I've never had a bad experience. I've even gotten highlights, under the supervision of the instructor. I just went today. I got a roller set on natural hair for only $12. Great way to save money. image-521408538.jpg

Hi girls,

I know I started this thread a while ago, but finally went to the beauty school for my hair appointment on Saturday and I'm back for an update!

To make along story short, I am not going back. They have no idea how to do natural hair or black hair for that matter. I asked for a shampoo, blow dry and flat iron. It took the girl three hours to blow dry my medium length hair and she didn't even get it straight. My roots were all puffy because she never got the flat iron close enough.

I paid $20 and will not go back. Atleast they didn't damage my hair though. I guess that's what I get when I go to a novice. Lesson Learned
