Disappointing stretch results/stylist whacked off my hair

I know this thread is worthless without pics, , but I just had a disappointing 14 week stretch and need to vent. I finally got my TU on Monday, and I specifically told the stylist I was trying to grow out my hair, so to please take off 1/4 of an inch. All was well until she asked if I wanted to maintain my layers. I said yes, thinking maintain means to maintain what I have, not give me a major cut. Once she was done clipping and styled me, it seemed like I was shorter than BEFORE I started the stretch!

Plus I looked like a little old lady, nothing like my siggy pics.

So I just set my hair, unable to take the granny style anymore, and finally realized that she gave me DEEP layers. Most of the top 2/3rds of my hair are is short. That's why it seems a lot shorter then before.

My only consolation is that I did not have one broken hair at the line of demarcation, and that all of the (remaining) hair on my head is healthy, even with the double processing. My stretching experience was so surprisingly pleasant that I didn't want it to end. But my ends were getting gnawed and I'm not used to going that long without a trim. A TRIM, not a cut!!!

I'm just really disappointed now. I hope I can still make it to BSL by the end of the year. I'm going to baby my ends and try to hang on another 4 months before I relax again.

QUESTION: Does anyone know if it's advisable to trim with 3 - 5 months of new growth? If so, I may stretch even longer and dust my ends myself.

I am so sorry about that. It seems as if we just have to say "NO" regarding any scissor activity near our heads.

Congrats on a successful stretch though. No breakage is a great accomplishment!

Oh why why why do you ladies keep letting these people do this to you?! I will never understand it I will walk around with hair at at angle from self-trimming than let someone chop off all my progress. And that's real. (cuz I've done it )

I'm really sorry this happened to you. Stuff like this just makes me mad! Even after you told her you're growing your hair out, she still went and did whatever she wanted anyway, and she still got your money. Do not let her trim your hair anymore, from here on out, get a friend to do it for you.

I don't suggest trimming with so much new growth. I dunno if this happens to you, but my hair grows at different rates at different parts of my head. So if you trim, then relax, you may end end having to trim again to even it out.

On the bright side, at least your hair is healthy, and your ends are starting off fresh. I would love to see updates on your hair!

I don't think I'd trim with that much new growth. If you must, keep in mind that you may be trimming it again to neaten it up after the retouch. Also keep in mind that the more new growth you have, the more your ends will *appear* to need a trim than if you had freshly relaxed hair that lays smoothly on top of itself. Hope this makes sense.

Yeah, you know...they just do what they want to do to you...makes me feel violated. We need to start holding these people responsible.

I'm sorry this happened. But I think there was a break down in communication regarding the layers. Maintaining the layers means basically keeping them in tack as oppose to growing them out. If all you wanted was a trim on the ends, that should have been clarified more so to the stylist - only the ends. Then at that point I would have monitored her every movement.

But on the bright side you have head full of healthy hair and a trim/cut never hurts anyone. When I use to get my hair cut/trim I would love it and it made my head feel so much better. Your hair will grow back no time at all. Just remember that if you want to grow out the layers be specific to only trim the ends.

I would suggest trimming your own hair and doing your own touchups or get the help of a friend. My hubby helped me with my last touch up and it went really well. He also helps me trim my own hair. But before that...I still did everything myself. Cause I feel like if anybody is going to jack up my hair it better be me. It makes sense to me, but not to any family members...so I keep it to myself. Then they say "girl I love your hair, who do you go to." I'll say "Oh this, thanks." and keep it moving.

I even did my own hair for my wedding and it looked gorgeous, even if I do say so myself.

I hope you consider becoming a do it yourselfer. LHCF has inspired me to take matters into my own hands and my hair loves me for it.

Keep your head up, Jamila. I think it is safe to say that alot of us here on this board have had the exact same thing happen to us (I had a stylist "trim" off 5 inches of hair in one sitting so I feel you).

Be encouraged-check out Anky. Someone got scissor happy with her last fall and her hair is back-just as long and beautiful as ever!!!!

OP, same thing happened to me last May. Since then Ive been dusting often so I wont have that happen to me ever again. Dont worry, it'll just take a little longer, but just learn to keep those stylist's scissors out of your hair.

Honey i am so sorry this happened to you. I could only imagine how you must feel. I am still feeling the effects of what my stylist did to my hair when she cut my hair into layers. To me the right side is thinner then the left. Everytime I style my hair I see it and just want to punch her in the face. From that point on, I said to myself that I will trim my own hair. Just like Keisha stated above, I don't care if it comes out lopsided, At least it is not all hacked off.

I went on a 4 month stretch and I did search and destroy method to battle split ends and when I flat ironed my hair, I would dust if I needed to. My hair seemed to remain pretty even (my hair doesn't grow at a even pace anyway), and it looked really good. So I'd say its okay if you flat iron first.

I'm sorry that happened to you.. The only good thing is that your hair is even yet not blunt. You probably need to start doing your hair yourself. I have and I get better and better with each try. The cutting might be a bit hard, but ask someone you trust to assist, because it is so disappointing when you work hard to get your hair to a certain place to have all your efforts destroyed. Speaking of which, I had a dream couple days ago where a beautician cut off my hair, it was really short, it seemed that I didn't realize it until I got home or something, grl, I was pissed.. You don't know how overjoyed I was when I woke up and it was all a dream.. Damn, I hate dreams like that...Anyway, I digress, chalk it up to experience because it will grow back

gosh I just wrote about a stylist trying to do this to me the other day! The ladies on here have convinced me to do it myself, and slowly but surely I will start doing EVERYTHING myself. I'm going to start practicing applying a relaxer with conditioner first, and the next time I need a relaxer I'm going to do it. I just really believe that I cannot get consistent growth and reach my hair goals with a stylist going against my wishes and chopping off every inch of progress, trying to force me to get layers and "trim" to make my hair even! I know how you feel, I just was burning up about this last week! UGH these stylists!!!!!!!!

Im so sorry, but i'm sure ur hair is still gorgeous. I feel ur pain. This is EXACTLY what happend to me! and i wrote about it in one of the 'major set-back' threads. when u go for a trim and they ask you about layers, SAY NO! a Trim is a trim and layers is a STYLE. they get confused and go into creative mode cuz you said yes to a 'style' cut and they forget everything you said and get carried away. where are those "just say no to stylists" buttons i heard someone talking about

ITA with all of the comments. Your hair will grow back stronger and longer than ever. By summer you will be past where you were before sitting in that stylist's chair . Doing your own hair will be rewarding!

NO! My normal stylist moved, and she would've never done me like this. I went to a previous stylist whose specialty is cuts (she really hooked me up when I got a very layered bob a couple years ago), but that's about it. I am going to have to make the 2 hour drive to my normal stylist.
