Oh NO my PH.D Professor didn't!!!!!!

Last night in class she had the nerve to open her mouth and tell the class that black folks hair do not grow as fast as white/spanish folks hair. (mind you....she is black with apl hair)

How could she put her race down like that!?

We all on this board know that it is not a matter of hair growth that causes our race (black) to not have "long hair" but it is a matter of retaining what you grow! Chemicals play a part in that! As well as dryness and coarseness. Everybody's hair normally grow .5 inches a month.

You should have seeeen the way the other races got amped and started flipping their hair around for the remainder of the night!

I know we can grow our hair long, I just felt she totally discredited us.

She is a ignorant ***** for thinking like that.

Whenever I want to give up on my hair, hearing comments like that inspire me even more. I really hate the ignorance about hair in the black community.

i've heard members here say the same thing your professor did. Hair growth varies from person to person, not race. Hair retention might be easier for other people if their hair type retains moisture, therefore they have less breakage.

I WISH every black women knew that!

This would have been a good opportunity for you to share a different perspective. If people hear the same message/"facts" repeatedly, then you shouldn't expect them to believe otherwise. If the AA professor made the statement and none of the AA students disagreed, then your silence is viewed as agreement. You might have felt uncomfortable speaking out in class but that is preferable to feeling regret or anger later over the missed opportunity, IMHO.

I wouldn't call the professor out ya'll - the average growth rate of african peoples IS slower than the average growth rate of Asian and Caucasoid peoples - that's been researched and demonstrated.....

Just like the average height of Asian people is less than the average height of Caucasoid people - still doesn't stop some Asian people from being tall.

The fact that our hair grows slower won't stop us from having long hair, either - nor does it mean that our hair doesn't grow faster than the white girl across the room from you - averages rarely play out perfectly once narrowed down to individuals.

I have to disagree with that. I've stretched for going on 4 mos, and my ng is not 2 inches. Growth rate varies with each individual. Chemicals and dryness could not affect the growth rate. It can affect length retention, but not the growth rate.

I hate it when people do that. I'm like....excuse my language...but wtf?!? It irritates me a little, because I don't think you can truly understand anyone else, unless you've been in his or her shoes. The same is true for hair. Unless someone can magically change into another race I think it's simply impossible.

hmm nappywomen u may be right but the whole point is why did she have to even say that and in front of everyone... and she aint break it down like u did she should have said although the grow rate is slower... that doesnt not mean our hair cant grow to long lengths.. when u make blatant statments like that u have to explain ur self well on ppl will go off thinking they know everything about our hair and they dont..

I would email her. If you want, u can PM me adn I'll do it. The professor was dead wrong on more than one level. For example, Spanish? What the heck? Did she mean latinos? Some latinos are black! The two groups are not mutually exclusive. Plus, it is not ur race, it is ur hair! There are white people who have very kinky hair and have the same problems that some AAs have. There are black people who have very strong fast growing hair. There are even some Indian people who have thinning hair that is harder to grow.

I'm assuming that she is like a sociology professor of some sorts and she was talking about black identity and how hard black people try to immulate whiteness in some respects. So, when we relax our hair or wear extensions, it is in some way b/c we want to be more like whites. smh...

I'm not saying that I don't believe you. But, where is that documented? And how can we be sure that that the results of the study are accurate? How do we know that those women take care of their scalp properly and don't clog it up w/grease like so many black women unfortunately do?

It's NEVER TOO LATE to inform, educate, or enlighten. And it doesn't have to be done in a way to call out the professor but to say that something about Black hair growth PROVOKED you to do some research and you discovered something different....

Also, with regard to Black hair growth: as we know, "Black" ethnic hair grows in all types of ways. My 4a fine hair grows and curls back into itself. It's growing but the length can be deceiving when not stretched out.

Give the professor and your fellow students a TEACHABLE MOMENT.

WHERE did you read/hear that? I need to get to the bottom of this so I can have some back up when I approach her with this information next class.

*nod* That's the same study I saw - they shaved the heads, and then measured the hair over the next few days.... I'm sure if you ask your professor for her sources, she'll be able to dig something up - let me see if I can find what I was looking at - it was just yesterday, too....

black hair (or to be more PC coily kinky hair) appears to grow slower because of growing straight and down, it grows in coils or zigzags or waves or whatever. that's why straight hair grows down, and our hair grows out.

but a significant amount of black folk still don't know how to care for their hair. which is another reason why some aren't seeing increases in length; poor hair habits will result in hair growing in that just isn't retained, length-wise.

clearly our hair grows, else we wouldn't have any new growth!

isn't the average hair growth rate for everybody with hair is about .5 inches a month; while possibly slower or faster due to genetics, good / poor diet, or usage of topical growth aids?
