My hair is still breaking. It has gotten worse. When I run my hands through my hair, long broken hairs just end up all over my hands. I'm so beaten down right now, I can't even go into details. I'm just so sad and don't know what to do. :( :(

ETA: I relaxed my hair with Mizani for the first time on May 10th and my hair turned out very nice. Silly me, decided to do a hard core aphogee treatment about a week after that and my hair starts breaking. I had a desperate cry for help, per this thread http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=237057

Long story short, I did everything I could to restore the protein/moisture balance to my hair and I believe that I've solved that problem. I frequently assess my hair to make sure I'm not lingering on the extreme side of either protein or moisture. Therefore, I think the protein overload caused my hair breakage BUT it's no longer due to that and I don't know what is causing it. The breakage has gotten even worse than before. When I run my hands through my hair (in the manner in which you would seal your ends or moisturize your hair), I just have all these broken hairs all over the place; if I continue to run my hands through my hair, it will just continue to break. Hence, why I think my hair must be very weak or something. I feel like my hair is slowly creeping up back to shoulder length or maybe it's just my new growth causing shrinkage. I am currently 71/2 weeks post relaxer. I normally stretch for 12 weeks.

I've also assessed my ends and I don't have any split ends, so I don't think that's causing it. My regimine is as follows.

Shampoo with Kera Care moisturizing detangling shampoo once a week and deep condition with Kera Care Humecto right after the wash
Co-wash with Humectress once a week and alternate with Mane and Tail conditioner (protein) every other week (i.e.- one week humectress, next week mane n tail, so I use protein every two weeks, I guess).
Blot hair dry gently with towel and comb/detangle while damp
Protective styling- I either twist it up in a bun or clip it up with a bobby pin or butterfly clip
Moisturize with ORS Olive oil and Seal with Vatika Oil
I also massage my head for thirty minutes with a mixture of Vatika Oil and three drops of rosemary oil before I shampoo
No heat (except deep conditioner and occassional rollerset)
Rarely wear my hair down
No brushing; gently combing

I really don't know what it is.

ok these are my first thoughts on this

once you have had protein overload its not THAT easy to fix oftentimes it takes some time , its not that easy to fix just with moisture , only over time. So you had the overload , yet you are still using and incorporating protein in your mix. I think you should drop all protein for now and only concentrate on moisture!

once you have had overload you wont need any more protein for a while! :nono:

My diet is okay. I don't normally eat junk food and I stay away from fast food.

I've been trying to drink more water. But I normally drink moderately - an average of 4 cups a day and more.

No, I rarely use heat.

I'm not transitioning.

I forgot to mention that I just started using protein about two weeks ago, when I felt that I had restored the moisture back into my hair and it was starting to feel too mushy.

That's me exactly. I tried Mizani Butter Blends a week and a half ago and did Aphogee hardcore last weekend (one week after). I wonder if that's why it's breaking ... It's not breaking excessively, but enough where I am going to try to stop it. Have you checked out this thread?

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=93610

I am going to follow these three steps and see if it will stop my breakage.

I've read both of those threads pre-aphogee overload. I'm going to read them again and see if it can help. Thanks.

I agree with irristiblle sometimes, it takes a while to get the moisture back from protein overload. It's much easier to overload on protein than on moisture.

Also, I know this is probably not what you want to hear but maybe you should get a trim about an inch. When my hair was breaking non stop for months, I got a trim and the breakage stopped.

Try to get the moisture back in, give it some time, and if there's still breakage get a small trim.

HTH.

I know a lot of people rave about them but I just can't mess with the Aphogee products :nono: I don't remember the specifics but I had the hard core treatment done by my hair dresser back in college. It was a mess. I stick to the occasional mild protein treatments like ORS Replenishing Packs, and Cholesterol. I'd rather overload on moisture than protein and I have yet to do that with my hair.

DC is key. How long do you do this, how (dryer, heat cap, etc.) Are you alternating moisturizing DC with protein DC.

On the back of the Aphogee Treatment, dosen't it say to use days BEFORE relaxer or color? Could that be the problem?

It says at least 24 hours before your relaxer

DC is key. How long do you do this, how (dryer, heat cap, etc.) Are you alternating moisturizing DC with protein DC.

When my hair first started breaking from the aphogee, I would deep condition at least three times a week with a moisturizing deep conditioner by leaving in in my hair for hours or overnight. I would also use a moisturizing conditioner as a leave in and then add ORS moisturizer and seal with oil. This went on for about 5 weeks. It wasn't until about 2 weeks ago that I felt it was okay for me to start using protein again, since my hair was starting to feel weak.

But, when I deep condition on a normal basis (no protein overload), I mostly sit under the dryer for about 20 mins and I rarely deep condition with protein. Just co-wash.

you know this exact thing happened to me it was terrible so I know exactly how you feel. everytime i would touch it short little broken hairs. i was near cutting everything off. i also had excessive shedding with it. what did it for me was per Aggie's advice it was going to take time to get the balance back so everynight I would cowash and whole head baggy with nexxus humectress (love that stuff), apply no protein or anything else, cowash it in the morning and protective style. sometimes i would seal with one of my many oils but not too much b/c i don't like how it feels and slowly but surely less and less hairs would appear in my ponytail holder. one great thing i have learned from this board is moisturize moisturize moisturize!!! even though i;m in kinkys now b/c i needed a break after that experience i still moisturize moisturize moisturize

second that!!!

Girl drop that protein, try some oil treatments and keep up with your moisture/DC'ing

and I bet you will see/feel a difference :yep:

Irresistable, what about people who don't have a moisture problem. My hair is not hard, dry, or brittle, but it is breaking anyway. It is soft and silky to the touch, I consish wash once a week, and DC for four hours every weekend and moisturize twice a day. What does that mean? Should I still stay away from protein? All protein (like even J/A/S/O/N bioton, which has some, or Salerm21 - a moisturizer that has some) or just hardcore?

Sorry to hijack your thread, OP. I just have the same problems and did the same thing you did.

See my thinking is any breaking hair must be brittle , if not to the touch then in the hairshaft where it cant be felt, I'm thinking the only answer is moisture moisture moisture, overnight oils, deep conditioning, with heat or overnight. When you have protein overload ANY of the proteins need to be dropped, even the ones in leave in's . I have overloaded on Slik protein, one of the softer ones, I have overloaded by using Collagen and Silk protein together. Check all your Conditioners and Leave in's for ANY protein and stay away from them for a while. This mushy hair thing with too much moisture I suppose is possible since some say it is, but I have never seen and overload of moisture be bad for the hair. All I can think is if its breaking and you are using protein ,any kind, then you dont need protein as it is not fixing the problem so it must be the culprit

Thanks, chica! I am going to eliminate protein as well altogether as well as try Supergirl's method to reduce breakage. Trying step 1 tomorrow with a real clarifying shampoo. Thanks again.

I saw her thread, she is 'on it' for real! always has been since I been around here! :yep:

I didnt read every detail but I'm sure she included steps for the clarifying because its very important to add moisture back immediately after doing that, because its so stripping/drying so do exactly like she says, I'm sure she covered it! :yep:

I have a question. Did you use the Aphogee Two Step? If you did, did you rinse out thoroughly? Did you use the moisturizer in the dark pink bottle that comes with it? If not, that is an important step to seal the moisture back. With the Aphogee Two Step, it specifically says to use their moisturizer, as they are formulated to work together. I generally use it two weeks prior to getting a touch up.

I do not know too much about different hair products, other than the ones that I use (thanks to the women on this forum), but Mizani, as you are aware, is for color treated hair.

I had that problem one time, and I literally cried. Consulted with my beautician, and she suggested that I use the Aphogee Keratin Two Minute treatment, and I'm thinking, that is more protein...she advises that it wasn't. I tried it, and it worked. Not suggesting it to you, but it worked for me. I hope this helps.

how did she say it wasnt more protein and keep a straight face at the same time? :look:

I think your right about following exact steps and I think another poster was right about some hair not being able to handle Aphogee at all

I'm going to try her method also. I even have the Mizani H20; just need to make sure it doesn't have protein in it.

Yes, I rinsed it out thoroughly and I also used their moisturizer. But I didn't buy the bottle; I bought the one that comes in a sachet for one time use.

I had no idea that Mizani was for colored treated hair; I used the Sensitive Scalp relaxer.

That's interesting about the Keratin Two Minute treatment. I'm weary about putting anymore aphogee products in my hair. I'll try all the advice I've received from this board first and if all else fails, will consider going to a stylist, which I haven't been to in three years.
