My last perm was January 2004. Up until last night, I felt no desire to look at perms. I was drawn to the perm section at Walmart. I was looking at the Cantu Perm, Soft Sheen and looking at all the nice pics of the straight silky hair. What stopped me is that I needed to check on LHCF which perm to get and I don't know if I am truly ready to give up the natural hair. I am so tempted. I want to wear my hair straight versus bushy straight. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.
 
Cooler weather's here now, why not just rock some straight flatiron styles and/or rollersets CG?
 
When I looked at the thread I was like Coutry Gal's relaxing?

If you decide to relax, there's lots of info here to help you keep it healthy:) Do you wear your hair straight most of the time?

And if you stay natural, thats cool too, you have the best of both world, straight one day, curly/kinky the next.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have been wearing wigs. They got me over the temptation before.

I have gotten use to seeing me with straight hair again. I like it over my textured styles. I think I will get braids to help me get over the strong temptation. My fear is that my hair has really grown and it won't grow as healthy again.
 
have you considered becoming a "straight" natural? Maybe you just need to perfect your straight ironing technique or go to a salon to get the swang?
 
I think you look really nice in the pic of you with the curly hair. I actually think it looks better than the straight one. Although, both look nice. The curls frame your face better.
 
There was a thread on here about that CANTU perm burning. I never liked box perms. I got better results with Salon Quality relaxers. Mizani and Affirm being my preference.

Hey LynnieB (Love you hair). Did you check in to the Where's LynnieB thread?

Country Gal (Another favorite) Don't do it. There won't be anymore Naturals to give us advice when we finish transitioning.
 
When I was relaxing my stylist used Affirm and also Mizani. My last touch up (done by a friend 12/30/07) was Silk Elements with Shea Butter.

Should you decide not to relax, there are lots of naturals who rock a straight style often. In fact, most that I see rollerset and flat iron the roots or get Dominican blowouts.
 
when i texlaxed after being natural i went to a salon, i cant recall what they used..i remember starting a thread on it yrs ago, whatever u decide u still look great as usual..

edited: it was alter ego she used on my hair...

Asummer...Your baby is BEAUTIFUL. I remember when you were pregnant with her....Haven't been on hair part of the forum for a while...so this is my intro to the baby post womb. LOL! Too cute!

CountryGal...I am against going back to relaxers now way. But, I too am also feeling the need to switch it up. I've always been a switcher upper. That is how I cut all my relaxed hair off in one swoop with about 3 cm of hair left. lol

But, I want to start wearing my hair in more straight states, mainly because these nots are too much TOO MUCH. I want longer hair now and I am not getting it with having to cut and brea these knots. My suggestion. TRAIN YOUR HAIR! Start getting it pressed more often. You can get your own technique down or start heading to the shop.

There are alot of pressed naturals whose hair does not puff up at the first sign of water or humidity and there hair isn't damaged looking, but just long and gorgeous. I don't plan to train my hair, but this could be a serious option that might work out for you well.

I am really tempted to do just that. I was concerned that constant heat would change my hair texture. It already has changed some parts already.

Thanks. I am trying to hold out. I had some success with straightening my hair this weekend. It has helped with the itch to perm. I probably will get braids to buy some more time. I wish I could be like the elderly lady at my salon. She had some beautiful gray natural hair.
 
My stylist uses Affirm and i really love it. I know ORS has a good relaxer that Walmart carries. A lot of women like Silk elements too. ;)

If I ever decided I want to wear my hair straight all the time, I would go the pressed route.

Strictly from a pro/con perspective, it makes more sense IMO.

If you relax, your texture will most definitely change and look almost nothing like it does now.

If you press regularly, your texture will change some, but it will not resemble relaxed hair, so you would have the best of both worlds without touchups. (*Sidenote: How is texlaxing the best of both worlds when you still have to get touchups? :lachen:) No touchups means no chemicals on your scalp, no burning (if you had that issue), no drastic newgrowth, and no long transitions or big chopping if you want to stop wearing your hair straight.

If you still decide to relax, you know there is a ton of knowledge here and I'm sure your hair will do fine.:yep:

WHEN I was a kid, my natural hair was trained to be straighter from all the pressing. I don't remember having textured hair when I was kid. I was surprised to see as an adult, my hair has curls, coils and waves.
 
OP, you should try straightening your hair more often. I used to wear my hair natural, but started getting so tired of the knots. Plus, I look so much better with straight hair.

In August of this year, I started straightening my hair once every week or two. It is still growing and my hair texture is the exactly the same. I have fine hair and can get my hair straight on 370 degrees. Condition, condition, condition. Use the lowest temperature needed to straighten your hair. Use ceramic heat appliances and a heat protectant. Also, I think if you decide to straighten you will have to get it trimmed more often. Search and destry is not going to work. I get salon quality results every time. See my photo albums in my profile.
 
Don't relax CG. I say try your hand at straightening with heat first. If need be go to a salon and get it done. The braids should also help curb that appetite for a while. Relaxer should be a last resort. I wish I had truly considered all my options because I went back to relaxers in 2004.

That's what I was going to say. The FHI Runway is supposed to get natural hair relaxer straight with just one pass. My friend is natural and she doesn't do textured styles at all. Straight hair all day, every day for her.
 
Foxxylisa I have a few questions for you. What is your hair type, do you blowdry before flatironing, what is your regimen and what products do you use when you flatiron? Thanks :)

I have been natural almost 4 years. I guess you have your moments of indecision. I do love the best of both worlds with natural hair. I can have a bush and the next day have sleek hair. I loved walking to the mailbox Saturday after blow drying my hair and it was completely big hair.

How is her hair holding up? Is it very healthy.

Faith your hair is lovely. Thanks. My fear is that I would regret it too. My sis made a good point. She feels my hair is so much heathier since it is natural. She thinks I may back track in progress if I got a perm.

I think 3c/4a? Not sure really.

Yes, I blowdry before flatironing. I just bought a FHI Salon Pro blowdryer. It makes my hair shinier, but you can't tell until you flatiron it. Right now, I use the first generation FHI flat iron. I will be getting the Runway soon. In general, it is important to use ceramic/ionic heat appliances.

Pre-condition with AO HSR or WC
Wash with Oscar Blandi Alla Crema (Sephora or Ulta)
D/C with Oscar Blandi Alla Crema (Sephora or Ulta)
I use H2 Ion and Chi Silk Infusion Heat Protectant (http://www.h2-ion.com/demo.html You can get a free trial of the H2 ion. It is expensive, but I can't live without it!)
Blowdry on medium
Flat iron on 370 (I use chase my denman with my flat iron when I straighten my hair).
Wrap hair
Once every six weeks I do an ISH Pro treatment (www.frizzy2silky.com)
Every 3 months I get half of an inch of my hair trimmed off

Foxxylisa, I do all that you mentioned and my flatironed hair doesn't have that swing. Oh well let me rephrase that, I don't blowdry with an attachment. I use a wider tooth comb and use the blowdryer or I do the tension method. Still no swing.

Your flatiron is at 370 Farenheit(sp?) I assume

Maybe it's also the denman. What type are you using?
