Hello Ladies!!!! As all of you know I am transitioning this year. I am only 6 weeks post my last relaxer(Last Relaxer was December 2nd) and I am very excited to be natural. But it seems like its gonna take forever!!!! Since I used to be the weave queen, this is different for me but every time i see a natural with those curls, I instantly get jealous and hope my hair could come out just a good as theirs.:yep: I know my hair is growing but how do you not focus ob the length sooooo much???What do you do to pass the time and not focus so much on your NG length?????

Honestly...try to find a hobby. I have my "hair grow now" moments in spurts. Whenever I seem to really start focusing on my hair growth, I start thinking of methods to make it grow faster (growth aids, changing my regimen, etc...) when I know my regimen is fine. I try to find a hobby to keep my mind off the hair growth because I've learned that my hair grows just fine when I stay with my simple regimen. The times when my hair hasn't grown as much is when I start changing my regimen (i.e. I used heat almost every month last year when I usually only use heat 3-5x per year). I've found that when I leave it alone and stay with my regimen, hair growth will come. For me it was and is still learning how to be more patient.

I agree with nappy85, a hobby helps. When I was transitioning, I'd started running races and that really kept my mind off my hair except on wash/wrestle with my hair day.

Get braids. When i was transitioning, I keep my hair braided in microbraids for a year. I didn't even think about the length while in braids. However, if you decide to get braids, be careful with your hairline because tight braids will have you fighting another battle (trying to grow back the hair the broke from tight braids).

I used to sit in front of the mirror and wait for it to grow
After a while that was kinda boring so I would start going on hair websites, blogs, read product testimonials, etc... everything I could to start getting ready for my journey. I also kept a journal and taking pictures and updating Fotki helped too.

I forgot about that part of the transitioning phase. Boy did that drive me nuts!

Good luck!!!! And no two naturals are alike so find some inspirations, but try not to think too much about whether your hair will look like this or that. How many months do you want to transition?

:yep: Absolutely. I redo my hairline myself every few weeks; I make sure to make the sections bigger and use less hair so i don't go bald.

I plan on gettin my hair braided every 2 weeks when I get back to school on the 25th!!!

I get single braids done every 2 months and just wash and condition as normal. But I have to redo the braids myself when they start getting fuzzy.

Thats actually a good idea!!!!

I also have my "hair grow now" moments in spurts.
I'm in one right now. So I'm getting ready to put in Kinky twists to get over the urge.
Also, I stalk fotkis, Natural and Transitioning albums mostly. That is how I pass the time.
PM me and I'll suggest some for you.

Maybe you should set up a schedule for your length checks. (Like every 4 months or every 3 months) That might keep it off your mind.

Also I suggest that you eliminate your desire for length retention during your transition. Just maintain your current length doing modest trims as it grows.

I mean...if you really think about it all of the relaxed hair has to go eventually. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to reach a length goal while transitioning with 2 different textures. I'm not saying it can't be done but I just don't recommend it.

You focus on your own hair and get to know it as best as you can. You look for threads of those with short hair and see what styles they're wearing or post one of your own asking for styling ideas. You exhaust every style you could with your hair at this stage so you won't miss it when it's gone. You buy accessories that bring out your best. When your hair is short, your features and accessories stand out so knock yourself out looking sizzling hawt. Any makeup techniques you could perfect? Also find some fun way to pass time. Take up dancing, art, or volunteer at an animal shelter or daycare. Trust me, a watched pot NEVER boils so your hair will not grow till you stop watching it. <--An exaggeration but one that those who say "My hair doesn't grow" can confirm.

Keeping my hair in braids is the best way. This way you keep your hands out of you hair and mantain growth by not combing but once a month or every 2 months.

Me too. I strated transitioning before I found this site so when I found it, I was so thristy for the knowledge, I lurked or read for a little over 6 months just soaking up all the information looking at naturals fotki's, progress pictures, and regimes to prepare myself to take care of this new head of hair. I went as far as put pic's of natural haired models up so that I would stay encouraged, and not do something drastic like relax. January 12 made 24 months relaxer free for me, and the time really went by so fast. I'm really glad that I bit the bullet and grew it out on my own terms and BC'd when I was ready.:yep:

This is kind of what I'm doing now...it's been interesting because I haven't done a length check in MONTHS and don't really care to but I still have length goals in mind and that more in an effort to make sure my natural hair is a certain length before I even entertain cutting anything. My texture difference is subtle, but enough for me to tell the different when wet now. It's so cool to see all that healthy natural hair but I'm still not ready to let go of any of my length. Weird.

OP to pass time, I'd suggest doing some research about different products, ingredients and styles you think would be beneficial to your hair. I'm not saying go out and buy everything, just study. Fotkis are great resources :yep: and usually when you visit one, you find several others to look at. In the mean time, put your hair up and forget about it. Keep it moisturized and your protein balanced and let it do its thing.

When I was transitioning, I focused on other aspects of bettering my entire body not just my hair.:yep:
That's when I developed my "HealthyBodyHealthyHair" way of life.
Best wishes with your hair goals!

I played xbox but I still messed with my hair before that putting stuff in it...I wanted to wait at least a year but temptation to get it over with made me just chop it off early and I thought I would be mad at the length of the twa but after 7 months it's pretty decent and I keep it in a nice style.
