Dr. Oz says stop damaging your hair

easy for a man to say!

I do agree that chemicals compromise the integrity of the hair, but I along with hundreds of other women have proven that you can have beautiful, healthy, relaxed hair. I understand that some might say that healthy & relaxed cannot go together, but there is such a thing as relaxed hair that is as healthy as relaxed hair can be.

I like Dr. Oz, but his little experiment with the paint brush :nono: First off, the hair fibers are not the same as paint brush fibers and the concentration of lye that he used was obviously way more than what is used on a human's head!

Regarding the flat iron. I stay away from it mostly, but we are LHCF and we have come up with methods for flat ironing our hair and keeping it in good condition. The lady in the demo said she flat ironed daily. I can understand the hazards of doing that, but her hair actually looked very lovely, full, and healthy.

Happyone, thanks for sharing. My comments are not directed toward you.

I'm natural - but I thought NO-LYE was even more damaging than a LYE relaxer.:perplexed

Oh that's another thing, the "uninformed" consumer will see that and think that they should use a no-lye relaxer because the name implies that it doesn't contain any lye. It does contain lye and it IS more damaging than a "lye" relaxer.

I love the Dr. Oz show I know hes just trying to help, but I wasn't sold. The lady who relaxer her hair and the lady who flat iron her hair had a nice head of hair... that kind of under minds what hes trying to say.

Of course you can have healthy chemically or heat altered hair. :yep:

HOWEVER, you do know that you are creating some damage by using harsh chemicals or very hot appliances.

Lye and 350 degree flat irons are not exactly the best things for the hair/scalp. lol

It is your choice whether you want to make your hair look a certain way, and with proper use of product and good care and techniques, you can still have healthy hair.

Compared to a virgin hair in good condition, a relaxed hair would be "damaged" but it can still be strong and beautiful even if it isn't "perfect".

I agree! And relaxer technology has come so far. There are so many conditioning relaxers on the market now, a plethora of options to choose from!

:welcome: to the forum. Thanks for sharing. I disagree with him and think its very possible to have healthy beautiful relaxed hair as many women on this website are a testament of this.

Sure it's "damaging". The question is if you like the look and feel of the "damage" and if the "damage" causes your hair to actually break off. If he had put in a natural hair brush in a concentration similar to what people relax their hair with and left the brush in there for the average processing time, it wouldn't have looked like his sample brush, but it would have "fallen" down. That's what people want it to do! They like the look of that "damage".

Same thing with the pants. That lady was probably looking at those dyed pants like "ooh, that's a nice shade!" :giggle:

I damage my hair all the time (albeit not as much as chemicals would do) with my combing because I prefer the look of loose, non-dreaded hair for me.

The point is, if the damage results in a look you like and not in your hair all coming out, it's not going to matter to people.

I'm natural - but I thought NO-LYE was even more damaging than a LYE relaxer.:perplexed

I watched the relaxer segment twice. I do not think he was advocating the use of a "No Lye" relaxer as a substitute for sodium hydroxide. He said if you use no lye this won't happen to your hair = if you do not use lye this won't happen to your hair. He did not say use No Lye instead.

I can see how people can take it that way.

The relaxer demonstration really hit home for me. Even though relaxed hair can be beautiful, thick and full with proper care most women don't properly care for their relaxed hair. Many think they do but they really don't. So over time many women's hair starts to react just like that brush.

Many women start out with long healthy thick natural hair. They relax it and over time the length and thickness disappears. The brush mimiced this.

Even though, the brush wasn't a natural hair brush, the first time he pulled it up from the lye and water mix it looked like relaxed hair to me.

FWIW, I know the ladies of LHCF take care of their relaxed hair but the average woman is not an LHCFer.

This isn't new, we all know the dangers of relaxers and we know they're not healthy.

It's just picking your poison. I know red meat is bad but I'm still going to have my medium rare steak.

I wonder what Dr. Oz has to say about that.:lachen:

From what I saw when my sister was watching it on TV, I think he understands that women aren't going to cut these things out completely. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to get them to think a little more carefully about how they treat their hair, and in the case of the relaxer and I know in the flat iron, to possibly do them less frequently...which is certainly fair, otherwise there wouldn't be so much no heat and stretching hoopla around here..

Thanks for sharing Happyone.. I think he was just trying to say "DONT OVER DO IT" . We're on this forum because at some point we were all doing damaging things to our hair. We need to remeber most women are not memberes of hair forums. They don't know you shouldnt O.D. on relaxers, flat irons and color.

lmao...yea okay...we agree its bad and over time I'm gonna go bald like a newborn vulture....ok...thanks for the info, bye.

Thumps up Supergirl!

I can't see the video, but at least he's putting it out there that some women's hair is short due to *damage,* not because it won't grow
