Okay, yall I really need to hear your thoughts on this one since I have just turned 40 and I have no intentions of cutting my hair!

On two separate occasions, two ladies one 45, the other early 60s, was under the mindset that a woman should cut her hair after a certain age.

The first lady was a beautiful lady I met in St. Lucia who had a beautiful short hair cut. Well in her restaurant there, were posted several pics of her family and upon closer observation, a woman with hair that she had to stretch her arms to full length to actually reach the ends with some hanging still

! There was even a pic that had her sitting on the ground with knees pulled to her chest and her hair on the ground laying beside her (no lie)! She said she cut her hair because it was too long to deal with when sailing, fellow sailors complained 'cause she used too much water to wash it on the boat, and she felt as she got older, she felt like she looked like a witch! I almost cried

!

The other beautiful lady is a dear friend of mine whose hair is waist length and when I commented on how beautiful her hair was, she remarked that she needed to cut it 'cause she was getting too old for long hair! I told her that was nonsense but learned later that there were some jealous old bitties at her church who gave her that notion!

The should have all been lined up and

!

How do you guys feel about this? Will I be in danger of being called a witch as I achieve the desired hair length never attainable as a teen or young adult but as a 40ish woman? Not that I give a Rat's

!

But, should a woman cut her hair after a certain age

No. But I feel that hair should look GOOD on you. If you are 22 and your hair is 'witchy', then cut it to something nice. I don't think it's age: but the shape of your face, the health of your hair and your ability to manage it AND most of all your personal pref.

grandma says: if you like it--I love it.

Who said witches had long hair? The witch that taught Harry's class how to fly on a broom in the first Harry Potter movie (Madam Hooch) had short hair.

(Sorry guys; feeling a little Hogwartsish silly.)

I think it's a case of sheep following the leading sheep without knowing why or where it goes. I always thought the reason people cut their hair as they got older was because they weren't able to take care of it as well for whatever reason (time constraints, health, etc). I betchu some keen observer on seeing this trend came to the conclusion that it's the law.

Hmm...I'm surprised no chain letter is out there along those lines:
<ul type="square"> "If you don't cut your hair as you approach X years of age, a pigeon will pay you a visit and you DON'T EVEN WANNA KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR HAIR WHEN IT DOES!!! Ms So-and-so of Zamunda ignored this and something too dreadful to mention happened. So please cut your hair within the next few years...or meet your doom!!!" [/list]

I've always worn my hair the way I want to. So the answer for me is no I do not feel you have to keep your hair short after a certain age. I've been told I look better with shoulder length or longer hair. It's all in the style and how you take care of it.

Hi SweetCocoa and Henrilou! It's me PeachyQueen AKA Garr6982! I forgot to sign my name!

Henrilou: I agree, hair should suit a person's wants and if it looks good on them all the better!

Nonie and Peebles: Okay, now that I have gotten up off the floor... Yall are going to make me go out and get Harry Potter!

I am 42, and my hair is below my bra strap about 4 inches, and I get compliments all the time (little kids have told me I look like pocohautus!) - an I have had short hair from the age of 16 - 27. I confess that I started growing it due to a disease I was diagnosed with (rhuemathoid arthritis) because it became difficult to stay on short hair and styling it all the time. Now that I am in remission, my hair suites me!

I don't think age has anything to do with hair. All you have to do is make sure it looks good and is healthy. But your post did bring to my attention that there are alot of older women I know that have short hair cuts, I wonder if it is because of age that they cut their hair? To me that is ridiculous and those church ladies are just jealous busy bodies.

Garr6982...(sorry guys, this is OT, but blame it on Garr; she dangled a topic close to my heart and I can't help myself). Get the audio tapes or CDs too, when you get the books. Or just get them alone. I have read and listened to all 5 books and I still replay the tapes (unabridged, BTW!

I daresay it's as good as watching a movie - and that's no lie!

I don't read Harry Potter books, but I loooved the movies!

Ok, about the long hair...a

huh? Puleeze!

No! I don't think you should cut it at a certain age. I had enough problems trying to maintain short hair and it's gotten easier now that it's grown out. I know as I grow older I'll need what's easier for me so I'm keeping mine! I'm sure I'll find some styles to suit my face shape which look good on me. My great grandmother kept her hair past shoulder length until she died at the age of 88. She still looked good!

I think a woman should do what is FLATTERING to her. Personally, I think when a woman who is 40 and above has long HEALTHY hair, it makes her look younger, and it''s always a head turner. I don't know if you've seen Demi Moore's long hair, but it's GORGEOUS!!

Long hair is beautiful. What if you only reach your goal when you about that age. No way should you have to cut your hair because you older.

I agree Henrilou. Depends on how it looks on you.

My favorite auntie in the world was 53 and sported her waist length hair all the time. She kept it trimmed and neat and she looked wonderful...(4b hair)

what a nice inspiration.......

Re:

I used to think that having long hair after a certain age (i.e. 45+) would make you look older! But then I saw Demi Moore's and omg...she is definitely an inspiration that you CAN look good with long hair no matter what age you are!

I am 35+ and I have been asked when will I be cutting my hair. I am about 1-1/2 inch from the top of my bra strap. My short term goal is the bottom of my bra strap. Beyond that I want to see where I can go. But inqusitive minds have told me about cute "short cuts" they have seen for me.

I am going to keep to my goals...40, 45, 50 UNLESS I change MY MIND, not when others feel it is appropriate.

Let's join together my long hair sisters 35 &amp; over!!!!!!

I think age has nothing to do with anything. I saw a beautiful black woman a couple of years ago who was in her late 50's and her hair was past her bra strap. She didn't color her hair either and the gray even looked good on her. I saw her daily on the bus and she usually wore her hair in one thick braid going down her back but once a week she would wear her hair loose and wavy. She looked great!

In biblical times, I think the women always wore their hair long, no matter what their age, and their lifespan was longer too!

(I love Harry Potter too!)

well, i'll be 41 next month and there is no way in H-E-double hockey sticks i'm cutting my hair anytime soon!! i think the longer hair makes me look younger. look at my before pic. that was 3 years ago, but it looks like 5 years from now!!
laugh.gif

p.s. tara, i'm gonna beat naomi up and trade her body for mine!
grin.gif

No way, don't do it. I mean aren't these the same people who say that in your teens and 20's you should get a short cut to look more mature and sophisticated? So which is it?
pinocchio.gif

I actually think long hair makes facial features softer and does look youthful-Demi moore looks younger now in her 40's than she ever did before, need proof check out her new man.

I'm 40+ and I always get people saying that I look young for my age. One lady at the grocery even commented after examining my ID that its probably b/c of the way my hair is styled and the length.

People automatically associate shorter hair with age. I don't get it. Anyway, my thick hair is not flattering when it's short.

I used to think like that, but now that I've seen Oprah with her luscious hair:blush:...

doesn't apply to me. i refuse to get the Mom cut. i'm gonna be 80 with some bangin long napps. no scissors! ♥

I'll be 46 next week and I am not about to cut my hair due to age. period. Now I will cut it if I decide...then and only then. I get TONS of compliments on my hair from a diverse group of people...so I think that theory is dead!

I guess it depends on the person..A lot of older people do look better with shorter hair IMO. sometimes longer hair can make some older people look like a witch. my mom doesnt have long hair but when she wears long weaves/wigs she does looks kind of witchy..lol. I told her that she looks much better with short hair because it makes her look much younger.

Maybe adding some layer, or some curls could make a good difference instead of the straight flat look...

I have a co-worker who is in her 40s and she just got a hair cut a few days ago.. Everyone was asking her why did she cut her hair and she said it was because she's too old to be walking around with long hair...

Gotta say she looks sooooooo much better!! She didnt get it really short though.. just a little pass SL in a lot of layers...Its super cute!!

But I must add that I dont care how old I get I wouldnt cut mines!!! As long as I still look good..I'll be okay!! :)

That's how I feel too. Older women (I'm talkin 60+) do look better to me with shorter hair than really long hair. It's something about really long hair on some women that age that really just doesn't work well...I guess because long hair is usually associated with youth. I know when I get to that age I'll probably cut my hair but not at 40 and 50! That's not negotiable. But I can't wait to start rocking this:
