Okay,
I'm a newbie so am sorry if there's a thread like this. But, I wonder if there anyone out there who's like me who can give me some hope?

I'm neck length which is the longest my hair has ever been. I never ever had any kind of length, not as a child, teen years.. born bald... y'all hear me.. NEVER. :lachen::lachen::lachen:

No one in my family - on both sides has ever had apl or bsl .. neck length is hard to come by!!! lol... seriously!

I'm relaxed 4b, and i think 4zzz altho am not sure what that means - but basically.. my natural hair left alone is hard as rocks!:wallbash:

I desperately want at least apl with some thickness.

So is there anyone out there who has my hair type, hair history and background who grew their hair as an adult? Whoever you are please share what you do, how long it took and what ever else you did with details.. please!

Thanks

i never had long hair. longest my hair was is in my siggy pic and thats hella uneven!!!

ETA: the longest my hair ever was at all one length was shoulder length.

Forgive me for butting in, but if I'm correct, I think the OP is referring to people that didn't do a major cut and grow, but just always had short hair and now it's a lot longer. Am I right OP? Seems like in the other thread, a lot of these people had long hair b4, but had cut it and now it's grown back pretty quickly.

yes exactly... i started to read the thread provided... but i didn't get a chance to go through and see if there was anyone on that thread in my situation. It's always just a lil disappointing to hear someone rave about growth only to find out they had success in the past... I mean any growth any time is a thing to celebrate.. but that's not where I am.

I am someone who's never had any success at all and is only now acquiring the knowledge (thanks to this site) ... that's where I am.. and the kind of person I'm looking to get advice and inspiration from... is someone who was like me and got to where I'm trying to go.. and from the response.. I feel soo much better to know am not alone.

but thanks to that poster who posted about that thread..

Before taking better care of my hair, I had never gotten past neck length and if I did, i always had to cut it due to damage. My hair is now APL and I'm a few inches from BSL....I should be BSL by the end of the year.

thanks!

i stopped abusing my hair with weaves and heat. i was hittin my dry, unwashed hair with a iron, yes clothes iron every day! :lachen:

i just started leaving my hair alone. i started washing almost daily, something i thought you weren't supposed to do before i found the board :perplexed deep conditioning 2-3 times/wk and cut out the heat totally! maybe once a month if that.

i am relaxed as well. it took me about a year to even everything out without a major cut. as uneven as it was.

this is how i wear my hair air dried outta the shower just about everyday.

low manipulation has really been the key for me.

eta one more before pic for ya:

AMAZING!!! what did you do? When did you start seeing a breakthrough? Are you 4b relaxed too? How long did it take? I'm desperately curious. I just need a lil hope!

Thanks.

what made the difference for you? how did you change your regime?

Just stopping by to give support really. It's amazing how long our hair will grow if we take care of it properly:yep:. Trust me OP, learn your hair and what it likes, do not compare your hair growth to anyone else's (this is important) and you'll reach APL and BSL before you know it. Just keep it simple.

There's a young lady who's a member here. She has a blog and a ning group I think its called hairlista. I believe her screen name may be sunshyne. She also has a youtube channel. I believe she goes by Sunshyne on the youtube channel as well.

Do a google search on her.

thanks! hugs

I am beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of those people who never had long hair or lets say hair past neck length, neverrrrrrr!
I am somewhere between SL and BSL and I am still stunned, when I do flat iron, I am still looking at my image like, this can't be.
Sweetheart, it is possible, absolutely and unequivically possible!
But, You must be patient, and extremely gentle (low-manipulation if any at all) and pamper, pamper, pamper!
Good Luck to You My Sister on Your Journey, it will pay-off!

these are all inspiring testimonies and advice. I do agree, not sweating my hair growth with protective styles does calm my nerves, but it's quiet difficult to do looking at all the beautiful heads of hair on LHCF!

Well I guess this really does not apply to me since I had APL + hair as a child. But from the age of about 10 until recently, the longest my hair had been was barely SL. Thin, dry, brittle SL. I constantly had to cut it due to damage. Currently I am about 2 inches from APL, and the overall health has improved drastically.

Yep, Sunshyne had hair problems and once she started taking care of her hair, you wouldn't believe the difference. Definitely google her. Also, go on Youtube and put in hair journey. I've found plenty of women that went from NL to BSL!!:yep:

My hair is 4b, texlaxed and BY FAR the longest it has ever been. Short, damaged, neck length hair was all I knew while growing up. Now, I'm about an inch from waistlength.

My hair regimen is basically:
- eat healthy, get regular exercise, avoid stress and get adequate sleep
- moisturize once per day and avoid direct heat
- co-wash once per week, detangle then rollerset
- if there is buildup, shampoo, add leave-in(s), detangle then rollerset
- comb/detangle only when hair is damp; fingercomb when dry
- wear hair in an updo or curly/textured style (personally preferred over straight styles)
- self-texlax every 13/14 weeks (4 times a year); protein treatment, DC and color rinse at that time
- protect hair from rough surfaces and at bedtime
- trim hair after a major goal is surpassed or as needed/desired
- leave hair alone as much as possible (low manipulation)

My more-detailed hair regimen is located in my fotki, in the "About Me" section. Be encouraged OP; with the knowledge from this wonderful site, along with consistency and patience, you will reach your hair goals.

thanks ladies.. these responses have been so helpful. i looked up sunshyne's site .. good stuff. i'm inspired... keepin hope alive for some apl hair

My current length of APL is the longest my hair has EVER been. I owe it to protective styling, low-mani, and infrequent use of direct heat. Also frequent deep conditioning.
