Anyone Get Thicker Hair From Regular Castor Oil?

I love castor oil but getting the JBCO is just not practical right now and the regular stuff is just far more economical.

I know there's a lot of you that use the regular stuff.

Has it thickened your hair?
 
I would like to know too. I just started using regular castor oil and so far I love it for my ends. It makes them really silky.
 
The regular castor oil works just as well as the JBCO. I think it is about preference and what works for another's hair may not work for another--some claim that they got greater growth with JBCO and also, it is thinner than regular castor oil. The only recommendation that I would offer is that you mix the regular castor oil with another oil because it is too thick. I used the clear--NOW Brand Castor Oil in 2008 and within 3 weeks post relaxer, I began to see new growth and usually it would take a little longer.

I have used the three kinds of castor oil: (1) JBCO--It worked but I think I got as much growth as the regular(only difference was that my front was growing faster than it usually does; (2) cold-pressed(i.e., Heritage, Home Health--yellow-kind)--I am in love; and (3) clear kind--I got growth from it. This is just my experience.

I've used castor oil since the first month I BC'd. I don't know for sure if it's made my hair thicker because I still have a lot of thin strands. My hair is already naturally very dense though, it even was that way as a relaxed head. However, the times I didn't use CO and used coconut or jojoba oil instead, I don't believe I noticed a difference in thickness. I didn't use those oils for long though.
 
I think that castor oil gives the appearence of hair strands being thicker. I used JBCO for a while but once I stopped (cuz of the stinky smell) my hair didn't look so thick anymore.

I think henna is a better fix for thickening the hair. Atleast for my strands.
 
ive been using the reg laxative castor oil and in my opinion ist works just fine as the black hair castor oil. some bss also have hollywood beauthy castor oil i just brought some yesterday but i think i would rather stick to the laxative one
 
The regular Castor oil works for me. I have not tried the black one although I would like too since I have a bald spot from my last set of braids, and I have been nursing it back with the regular one. I guess I should post the pick and doucment it to see how well it grows back in, if at all!
 
While i was a lurker in 08' i wanted to experiment w/castor oil. I soon realized the cantu olive oil i used had it(castor) as the second oil in it(2 or 3 somewhere in there). I also wanted to find out more about vatika and other oils so i started mixing the Cantu o.o. to my dc treatments. That along with henna apllications(not very often either/on the henna) helped me achieve thickness i hadn't seen in years as a relaxed head. I've also been transitioning to natural since last year w/a lot of dc,moisturizing, & of course researching. HHJ!
 
Great topic. I just mentioned yesterday that I'm running low on my JBCO and will have to try out the regular kind. I can't afford the black stuff right now. But I do like the results as far as moisturizing I get from the JBCO. I get the same results regardless if I use it or not as far as growth (and my hair is thick so I can't really tell---each month is always something new and different). BUT it has affected the softness/moisture content of my hair. And for that reason, I LOVE it.
 
I got my (regular) castor oil from an Indian grocery store. I have fine strands, so I don't leave it in, I use it as part of my hot oil/ pre-poo mix. Depending on how my hair is feeling, I might also add some amla, or I might add some shikakai if I did henna recently, but I always add coconut oil.

eta: Yes, it has made my hair feel thicker. Not only that, but my mom, who's suffering from some traction alopecia in the crown (from loc's) has noticed new thickness as well.

I like it. I mix it with Vatika Coconut oil as a sealer and also I lightly oil my scalp with it before drying. It's a winner for me.
 
I use the clear castor oil daily on my edges, and it has really helped in making them thicker. I also have new hair growing in where the front hairline indents on the sides. There's definitely more hair there than it was last year!:grin: Castor oil also makes your hair feel soft and silky, the way silicone products do, but its better for the hair. It can make the hair heavy, so a little goes a long way! I just joined hairlista's castor oil challenge; this wil be the first time I've used it directly on my scalp.
 
I think both are good. I just recently tried black but I used regular from the indian stores until I found and could afford the other.
 
I just bought casor oil. It is realy thick. I think I will not be using this every day. Every other day sounds better. I hope this works for me.
 
OK...the only real difference between black castor oil (expensive hair trends stuff) and white (the regular stuff you normally find) is that one is refined and the other unrefined...this accounts for the difference in color and price. Unrefined stuff is usually better depending on how it was processed, but the regular stuff will work just as well. IOW, if you want the benefits of castor oil and to avoid bankrupcy, white will work just fine for you.

Great suggestion....henna's always a plan, but your hair is already so thick how could tell tell what worked better? :grin:
 
I was thinking about purchasing the JBCO again, but I wanted to see what others thought first. As a result, I will stick to the regular.

is it the darkness of the castor oil tho which determines the mineral content i.e. magnesium, silica etc or is that a by-product of the process used for extraction?

still trying to decide whether to re-stock up on the extra dark or use my home health stuff.... :scratchch
 
Regular, Home Health Castor Oil from the health foods store helps my twists to be soft, non-greasy and helps them to resist some shrinkage; been using it as my sealant for weeks now. The JBCO worked well but the HH works just as well for me without the bigger cost.
 
Yes. The pharmaceutical grade can help thicken hair. I had to stop using it as my hair is thick naturally and it made it unbearable. I used it for sealing properties, not believing the "thickening hype". I was quite mistaken and was in for quite a surprise. I blogged about the difference between J*B*C*O and regular Castor oil here. I blogged about Castor oil (clear) itself here.
 
You can buy 6 oz clear castor oil, brand name is Humco for less than $2 at Walmart. Its thick, clear, odorless, softens, moisturizes hair and makes my type 4 hair look and feel thicker after one application. After 2 days a pick can stand up in this bush. Your mileage may vary.
