Anyone scared to do their own hair?

I do not mean washing, rollersetting or twists but chemical service (relaxer), cutting?

I see so many ladies doing their own hair: color, sew in weaves, relaxers, braids, hair cuts (not trims).

I really thought I was doing something when I started to do my own rollersets but to see some of the ladies on this site and on youtbue - I am impressed!!!

I do not think I will ever have enough nerve to do my own hair cut.
 
let me tell u. I've been telling myself to start practicing putting in my own relaxer. I was gonna start off with no lye. But then i get on here and folks are doing their own lye relaxers and i'm like whhhaaaaat. I wish i had the balls to do that. i'm way too scared. I chicken out every 4 months and go straight to my beautician.
 
Back when I relaxed, I never did my own relaxers.... and I was too afraid to press my own hair too!

Now, I'm doing my own BKT's, which seemed a little intimidating at first, but I had no other choice because I didn't trust anyone else to do it. I gues my mindset has changed since joining LHCF. Everyone does their own everything around here, so it makes the thought a little less scary.

I still refuse to cut my own hair though. I'm afraid of cutting it unevenly. I can't even do trims, so I just search & destroy.
 
I wouldn't have the nerve but after seeing some youtube videos, esp one where someone demonstrated how to do a relaxer with condish, I think I could do a relaxer for my mother (I'm natural), especially if she let me practice a few times with a DC.

cutting though? :nono:
 
^^^ I have done my own BKT about 5 times. But since it's not a chemical service, I'm not afraid to try it. I did have it done professionally, twice, before I tried it on my own though and as a treat I will still get my BKt done professionally.

I do not even put scissors in my hair. I pluck my single strand knots off with my finger nails. I will buy some scissors though.
 
Over the years, I have done everything. I've trimmed, cut, colored with perm and semi perm, relaxed, braided, sewn in weave. If I want to make sure my hair is cut evenly, I have my momma to do it. I've been doing my hair since I was 12 and I love all things hair. I've never had the fear of going bald due to self relaxing or self coloring.

I do everything myself because I'm picky. After I tell you everything you need to do to my hair, I might as well do it myself and keep my money in my pocket. Also salons aren't all they are cracked up to be. There are many shopping at the same bss as those without a license, pouring products in unmarked containers to give the illusion they are using professional platinum on your hair....I'll pass. Anyway I love being a DIY because if it's not cute, or its so wrong, it's my fault.

My momma always said learn skills to maintain your beauty and appearance, so if you pay someone it's because you want to, not because you have to.
 
i have absolutely no hair skills but i don't mind sometimes. this weekend, i was stressed out with my hair (i'm a natural) and decided that i would perm it but then started to get scared because i don't trust hair stylists with my hair anymore. since i can't do it and refuse to let anyone else do it, it just won't happen lol so for once, my lack of knowledge helped me out. might have to learn how to do it in case i decide to relax later but my goal is to learn about my own texture for now. i wonder if my mother would trust me enough to do hers:yep:
 
Yes, I would love to know how to self-relax but i'm a little scared that I would overlap or not get it full straightened. I guess I should spend more time studying the online vids and tutorials.
 
I was scared to do my own relaxers. But after looking at YT vids I got up the courage :D So I did my 1st one in May, which turned out slightly more tex'd than I would have liked. The end of August I'll do it again with hopefully better results.

Trimming. I bought the scissors...they've been sitting here lol. Maybe I'll work up the courage to during my next relaxer :ohwell:
 
i was scared...in the past i tried doing my own relaxers. im not relaxed anymore and was scared to do my hair..and firt try was crochet braids! got them done well, then a month ago or so i did my own extension braids and then that got me impressed! and gave me more confidence on trying more stuff. i got angry on my hair for tge first braids but at the end i was proud.oh i also in the past tried doing a color in my hair= it came out right :-)
 
When relaxed I couldn't trust myself to do my own relaxer but I'll let any1 who I had relaxer to it for me:nono: I have no problem putting scissors to my head and I'm still not good at it.:grin:
 
All it took for me was a good stylist to burn me.....I said to myself I CAN'T DO ANY WORSE...I actually care about my hair more than anyone.
I trust myself more than anyone.
I'll probably only go to the salon for highlights now...
 
If it weren't the texlax, I wouldn't need the salon. If I relaxed bone straight I think I could get up the nerve to self relax, but with my texlax I can't even trust most professional hairstylists. I have hair scissors and do a S&D every so often myself. I wish I could self texlax.
 
let's see i have relaxed, texlaxed, texturizered, braided, cornrowed, twisted , colored, trimmed, dusted, pressed, curled, flat ironed and highlighted. i even bc'd..(my brother evened it out) not a bad job.. i learned how to do my own hair because i got sick and tired of paying someone to mess it up. if i mess up i can put on a wig, regroup and try again..

when i am able to get my hair done it will be because i want to feel pampered..:grin:
 
I have done my own relaxers, braids, weaves, quickweaves, and cuts. I am my own beauty shop. I am not paying anymore for someone to do my hair. My next thing is to straighten my own hair which will be at the end of the year for a real length check.

I know what you mean about the DIYers here.....our LHFC sisters are quite talented.
 
I'm a bit torn. I use to do it without any hesistations but that was before learning how to care for my hair. Funny how my hair flourished back then and I overlapped something serious when doing my touch-ups. Used heat a lot, never moisturized/sealed and baggyed, etc. My hair was thicker and longer. Amazing how now that I'm caring for it far more than ever, it's not at that state it once was. Even still, I'm spoiled at having someone do it for me and not interested in doing my own chemical services until I get that bill at the end of my appt. *sigh*
 
I am scared to just about everything to my own hair. When I was relaxed I never ever self relaxed, not once. I don't even like washing my own hair. Now that I am transitioning I hate to straighten my own hair, it always seems like something goes wrong, my hair ends up feeling crispy or something and crispy=breakage, it never comes out soft and silky like the salon.

The one thing I will do myself is cut. I think I got skills with the scissors and I am good for trimming my own hair when needed. My only problem is the back gets tricky sometimes. But I hate crazy looking ends and will trim them with a quickness.
 
In a word:YES
I know you won't intentionally do anything to hurt yourself but truth be told i am seriously afraid of setbacks(minor and major).

ITA :yep: A "professionally" applied relaxer burned a silver dollar sized area in the back of my head a few years ago (see fotki). Not only did a stylist burn me, she had no idea what to do once she burned me. I was livid!

I can't believe we trust others more than ourselves.

Sure, I was scared to do my own, but I did it! Now I've found better things to do with my time, patience, and money. It is also very gratifying. Just start small, you'll be fine.
 
I swear i wish I could do my own weaves and not give that funny acting stylist of mines, any of my money. I stalk so many self-installs on youtube and I've tried to do my own a few times but it never comes out as flawless as the girls on youtube or when the stylist does it. It angers me. :wallbash: :wallbash: I can't go without my weave because I am CLUELESS about styling natural hair that is shorter than shoulder length (I BC'd in January):yep:
I do have a mannequin head. She has a ton of hair. Maybe I can start with her and learn from there. But I HAVE to begin somewhere, so help me God because I would save a lot of money and I will feel accomplished.
Those girls in the salon have such poor attitudes and they swear they know everything when it comes down to weaves and hair care but yet NONE of their weaves look natural and none of them have edges or decent length. SMH. The stylist is clueless too a lot of things, but swears she knows everything. For example, I love the way the Kardashian sisters weaves look; I love the long part in the middle with flowing, layered locks. I wanted to create a similar look, only with a bang in the front. The stylist told me that I needed 3 packs of hair to recreate the look:perplexed (after she went on about how it won't look like theirs blah blah blah) I bought, as she demanded, 1 pack each of 16, 14, 12. Mind you these hairs are costly considering its Indi Remi hair. She sewed it in, cut me and unflattering bang, after I described in detail, what I wanted the bang to look like. She didn't even cut layers in the hair, which was the style I was going for:wallbash:
I ended up going home and cutting it myself and it came out exactly how I wanted it. I do admit I got a little scissor happy, but I know for next time. And I also realized that I didn't need all of those different lengths, the hair simply needed to be cut and styled. SMH at these no good stylists and I pray one day I learn how to do my own sew in weave like the girls on youtube.
 
I have done it all to myself. If I mess up at least I did it, and not someone else therefore no one to blame but me. I just recently did another sew in on myself, its going good so far.
 
I got tired of how stylists were treating my hair, ignoring my wishes and telling me my hair was too long for a proper curl and needed to be cut to shoulder length to look good so I started doing my own relaxers. I just did my 4th self relaxer last week. Getting started is always the scary part for me. I have to breath deep and force myself to make that first part and go for it. So far so good! I've never burned myself or my ears and then told myself to just sit thru it a little longer or it won't get straight, I've never over processed and I've never *****ed to myself about how I needed to charge myself extra for how much hair I have, how thick my new growth was because I waited too long, how I need a cut/color/deep cond., never ripped out my hair after shampooing with a fine tooth comb (or worse, a brush!!! WTH!!) and then waved it in my face and complained that all of the hair in the sink was because I waited too long, never sneak and break out the scissors, or whatever...Nice to just "relax" in silence! If I make a mistake and mess up it's on me and it certainly won't be out of malice!

I still get nervous doing it but I'm getting better with each one and will continue! Not to mention the cost! $8 for a self kit vs $80-$100 won me over big time! And I get to keep my length and dignity and not leave the salon like a chastised child who dared to want to try to grow her hair to the best of it's ability!
 
^^^ Funny you should mentioned all the hair in the sink due to "waiting too long" to get a touch up rather than due to rough handling. I knew a stylist many, many years ago from a shop in my home state who said things like that to clients. I am amazed that she kept repeat customers at all.
