Child Relaxer vs. Adult Relaxer - Any Difference??

Is there really any difference between [regular] adult relaxers and children's relaxers? My girl I just had a disagreement about it, and she says they're all exactly the same - lye is lye and no lye is no lye, whether or not they put a child's face on the box to sell the product. I've used both, and I think that children's relaxers tend to be a little more gentle and conditioning, which is why I switched over.

I haven't relaxed in 4 mos (trying to transition), but had been using a PCJ with Nutri Sheen for Children's Delicate Hair, and it's honestly the best relaxer I've ever used. I think it's b/c my 3c/4a hair is thick (density), but fine (individual strand), and I find the PCJ to be less damaging. Before that I used Just for Me and Beautiful Beginnings. My girls says I'm believing the hype,

I do think it is hype but having used PCJ in the past I know that relaxer is . But I have never seen the one specifically for children's delicate hair, is it lye?
 
When I used PCJ (original)in my hair versus other relaxer brands my hair was healthier. So I definitely think it gentler. If I would ever consider going back to a relaxer it would definitely be PCJ.
 
i read somewhere that childrens relaxers are sometimes worse than adult ones in terms of ph. cant remember where i read it though....still chemicals are chemicals.
 
Well I beg to differ. When I used childrens relaxers my hair was much healthier and fuller. After switching to "adult relaxers" my hair was much more delicate than ever. I attempted going natural, but changed my mind and I use the PCJ childrens relaxer w/ nutrisheen for delicate hair. I love it. Its a lye relaxer, its GENTLE, its GREAT. Even my hairdressers who have not came in contact w/ the product love how my hair comes out and in turn have been recommending it to parents, and PCJ pretty n silky users. The Ingredients might be the same but I believe that adult relaxer tend to b stronger and therefore more damaging

I agree. I was using the same one, and it's better than any of the other PCJ relaxers. It has lye, but it's the mosy gentle relaxer I've ever used, and I too would get great compliments on the condition of my hair. My hair also grew a lot with it. If I decide to relax again, I'll definitely stick with it!

hey that PCJ for delicate hair sounds great for "fine haired" people. where can u find it and can u use it if you've been using a no-lye relaxer?

Yes, it's EXCELLENT for fine hair!

You can find it an any beauty supply, and even Wal-Mart and drug stores. It's very common, you just gotta make sure you get the right one. It doesn't say "no lye" on the box, and the picture on the front is hella old shool w/ a lady with feathered hair on it (just go with it) and a little girl next to her w/ a hot pink background. You've probably passed it a thousand times, I know I did. The box looks straight out of the 80's, so I never would have given it a 2nd look. And yes, you can use it even if you've used a no lye relaxer before.

I am actually thinking of going back to it once I finish up my Fiberguard. It is a great relaxer.

The PCJ relaxers with the Nutrisheen conditioner require you to apply the conditioner BEFORE using the neutralizing shampoo. Does anyone know if I could use neutralizing shampoo first and then finish up with the conditioner? I am used to neutralizing FIRST after rinsing the relaxer cream from my hair. Thank you.

Did you ever have problems with it burning since it is a Lye relaxer? I have always heard you have to work quickly to apply Lye relaxers because they process faster. Is this true? Thanks.

I've never had an issue with burning no matter the product unless I was digging into my scalp before the perm and even hen it would be in the spot I was scratching. Also I've used the neutralizer first (because I forgot about the nutrisheen) and the hair comes outs just as nice.

A couple years ago, I used Just for Me No Lye children's relaxer. Everytime I used it I got scalp burns

. I have been using Luster's Pink Oil Conditioning Relaxer for nearly two years and experience no scalp burns with this one. I have tried the PCJ Pretty-n-Silky but I did not like the way my hair felt after relaxing. It felt kind of rough.

I'll bump this thread up and make a comment, because I'm "going through" right now. I have fine 4b hair, but a great thick density.

I am seriously considering switching TO PCJ lye relaxer FROM Affirm mild lye. The Affirm is too strong. My hair dresser rushes through the Affirm touchup applications like a maniac and my hair strands are STILL very weak (in addition to being fine).

Every chemical option I've tried so far has been wrong:
1. Affirm weakens my hair such that it's starting to thin. 2. Curlex didn't relax the 4b coils at all.
3. I was natural for several years, and it's not something I'm ready to consider again. I can't get my ringlets defined without a relaxer of some sort. Plus I've got shoulderblades length lye relaxed hair to work with now.

So, Tuesday I'll call the salon and introduce the idea of bringing in the PCJ box for Todd to apply. We'll lock horns at first, since he uses Affirm mild lye across the board for every hair type that walks in the door. I hope he'll see reason. Maybe one day I'll be competent enough to relax cheaply from the box at home like you ladies do.
 
The children's relaxer might be more damaging than Affirm?! cutebajangirl, did you have to rush through the applications with PCJ? Did you apply it by yourself, or did you stylist apply it?

I've only ever used Affirm. A lot of type 4s on the board didn't get as great results with motions relaxers as my type 3 friends who swear by it.

Time to schedule a consultation with Todd to go over my options.

With motions mild my hair broke down the least since I wanted straight hair this was a problem. I think though that since your hair is easy (it seems like) to break down then you can still use such a mild relaxer regardless of your hair texture. I would buy a jar and have him do a test spot to see what happens.
