Colored Naturals..Hows Your Hair Doing?

I've never colored but I really want to within the next few months. I want like an Auburn color. I saw another natural with the exact color I see myself with...she said she used like honey blonde. I'm scared to use anything remotely close to blonde. I do not have the skin tone for that. She said it doesn't actually get blonde because she doesn't use chemicals. I really want something though!

How do you lovely ladies pick a color that matches your skin tone? Did you go to a professional or just grab a box of the shelf and hoped for the best? Did you find out your undertones and what not first (something I should probably do)?

naw, i didn't do anything methodical like that...i just grabbed the box on which the model's hair looked the prettiest to me, and that's been my signature color ever since.

i'm completely serious-but i'm sure there's probably a better way to go about things. i'm just a rebel.

I was nervous about coloring, and i colored this summer, and like the others on this thread, i've found myself not being able to really stop!

This is all of my hair braided up, but i like how the color looks:

I usually use a very simple reggie - but since coloring i have been trying to keep it moisturized by using more conditioner and oils and doing a little more water type activities (washing/co-washing).

but no breakage, or extreme dryness so far.

and i went to a salon for the color and the style below.

I've done rinses before when I relaxed myself and my hair was fine. Decided to go permanent and my hair broke the hayle off! hono: I want color so bad but the next time I do it I think I will do it myself. If its going to break off I'd rather I do it than another "professional". Im considering honey blonde by Silk Elements that I saw another natural with and she says her hair is fine. Its not blonde but its more of a brownish color, which is the color Im going for. So we shall see.

My hair is doing fine...and it is bleached. Just know that when you color, you really have to be really gentle and super loving. I color out of necessity (IMHO); I have been gray since 19...well that, and I just love the look of color .

Go to a pro. It's the best chance of you getting the color you want.

did i respond in this thread? if not, my hair is flourishing! i love aveda. i will not use any other color/go to any other salon.

i'm recoloring later this year after my wig challenge is up.

going blonde baby! highlights that is!

you could not pay me to use any other color. at 98% natural, aveda, IMO, is very natural friendly!!

i dyed mine a couple of months ago with nutrisse lt med brown, but since my henna tx 2 weeks ago, it's more red than brown, but i love it! it has not hurt my hair in any way and as a matter of fact, i'm flourishing. i have been toying with the idea of going back black tho, b/c i loves me some black silky hair and i miss it already. might use indigo??

but my hair is still growing well and very silky and soft and i flat iron often, at least 2x a month. i alternate between wearing my natural curls and flat ironing.

IDK how I missed this but thanks Yeah I tried to cater to the colored hair and follow my stylists instructions but nothing worked. My hair was still growing but my ends stayed cripsy from breakage. The highlighted hair was also always looked frizzy compared to the rest of my hair. I was over it so I just told him to cut what was left off. You could see a big difference in the condition/health of the new hair compared to the dyed hair. The highlights grew out really fast too. He highlighted my hair in September and by April my hair was noticeably longer but I only had patches of color left. I had it trimmed twice between Sept and April so that was 4 trims in 7 months. Now I only trim maybe once a year and I have no problems with crispy ends. I know it was that dye.

My hair is doing great. I dyed my hair dark reddish brown on the front top half of my head. Because of using semi-permanent black dye in the past--I had to bleach it to lift the black. I've had no issues at all, and I'm loving the change.

I just got highlights in March. It was professionally done using foil. I have no idea what color it is. I must say that for me color on natural hair is a totally different situation than color on relaxed hair. When I was relaxed I always had light brown/blonde strands of hair all over the the floor and in the shower. Currently my retention is wonderful. My hair is not dry at all. I'm really glad this is working because I'm the type of person who has to have some color in my hair. Holla!

I just want to say that you are a beautiful woman and I LOVE the color on you.....question, if you went grey early then why not just do rinses and semi-permanents since they cover greys without the damage?

My hilights are really REALLY light and the hair is different from my other hair, slightly more porous, but the curl pattern is the same and I DC w/ Redken color block or whatever its called. it has a lot of protein and i see little to no breakage.

I would recommend you guys don't use a box color. Thats about the worst thing you can do for your hair.
And any permanent or demi permant color requires a developer which lifts the color. Any color lifting is a bleaching process. Semi permanent is the only color that does not "bleach" the hair.

I had it done at an Aveda salon so i can't give color names. but we used 3 colors: a shade of red, a shade of brown, and a shade of DARK blond.

i now moisturize and seal twice a day, cowash daily, and DC with a mix of a moisturizing conditioner and a light protein treatment weekly. and i did away with my sulfate shampoo and silicone products. mostly natural stuff and my hair is happy.

and i went back to bunning during the week. its only out on weekends

well if you don't want to go to a professional, you should use the professional color... i might do a youtube video some day i am nervous though. but the box versions of anything have the lowest quality components that the company has to offer and the developer is still strong.
If you are nervous when you go to a stylist to get color, just ask them to use 10 point developer. That is the weakest developer and it will lift your color the slowest which will then be more gentle and there is less room for mistake on the stylists end.

For me, the rinses and permanent color never did fully cover the grey hair and the color never lasted long. I started out with rinses and sem-perms (on a relaxed head), but quickly realized that I was doing more damage by virtue of the fact that I would have to re-up so soon. I only color about once a year now, so for me even though my hair is bleached 5 ways to Sunday, it appears to be thriving...I do realize though that each person must find her own way when it comes to this color thing! I love color!!!

No, bleach and developer (peroxide) are two different things. Bleach is stronger (i.e. harsher), and can lift hair to shades that developer alone can't. That's why ppl use the term "bleach" specifically.

i had my hair colored at an aveda salon back in March. i love my color. at first there was no issues with my hair, it reacted the same as it did before color. then i started noticing dryness which my hair never has because my hair holds on to moisture. so i cut out protein for a while. initially i was doing light protein like AO GPB at least 2x a week because my hair is really fine and thin, before color this was great for me. after color it was too much so i cut back to 1x a week and then i would forget and go 2 weeks without protein and my hair loved it.
my hair still needs protein though because its so fine, so this time i went 3 weeks without protein and im noticing a tiny bit of breakage so i will do a co wash with giovanni reconstructor tomorrow.

thats all ive noticed though, and to me its no big deal because i know when my hair needs protein because i co wash with moisture daily.
ive also started doing more oil treatments at least once a week. today i mixed coconut oil and evoo before i co washed with giovanni smooth as silk.

would i get aveda color again? yes, i think the color was gentle enough and i like the way my curls look with color. also i dont have all over color, just highlights.

Has ANYONE bought the Aveda color online and done it themselves I really wanna try this on my own (to save on cost) I just need someone to give me some sorta step-by step as I've never done this before.

I see that I've posted in this thread already; I'm too lazy to go find my post so I'll just update with my hair's condition as of now, lol.

I cannot wait for this color to grow out. I can definitely tell the difference between my virgin hair and the colored parts. I blow-dried my hair last Thursday and the difference in silkiness was amazing. My virgin hair was shiny and soft while my colored ends didn't have a high sheen and felt a bit more rough.

I do take care of my hair, but I can see the impact that color can have on one's strands overtime. I've been tempted to just cut off the colored ends, but that would be like 3-4 inches of hair. I'll do it eventually, maybe after I reach MBL.

I can't wait to have black hair again, though.
