I'm fuming mad!! U guys have no idea!!!
I was 1' friggin inch from BSL...SO CLOSE!!
Then I straightened my hair and my ends were HORRID!! HORRIDD I tell u!!
It was see-through, thin, with TONS of knots and split ends! :cry2:
I couldnt even let it out cuz women @ work would say: "Nice hair...but so many split ends martz" :nono:
I couldnt take how unnaturally uneven and rough my ends look...so I got my girl over and told her to go on and CUT! I DIDNT CARE!!! I'm now SL :(

I've been doing everything! Co-wash, treatments, baggy, shea butter on ends! And this is what I had to suffer! Another MAJOR cut this year! I'm so f*cking mad I cant type str8!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Everyone is progressing and AGAIN I'm at SL. My mom was annoyed saying I should have let it all grow out...but the more it grew, the worse the ends got and the harder it was to style or be happy with :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

What do I have to do to maintain HEALTHY ENDS?! WHAT IS IT?!?! Cuz I'm damn near losing my mind!!! 2009 i was aiming for full BSL, now hell, I dont even know if I can make it safely to APL! :ohwell:

My hair is bouncy, soft and healthy...but lawd help me with these DAMN ends!!!

WOOOOOOOOO-Saaaaaa.....I'm irritated to the umpteenth degree!! Help me out please!!!!!

I'm sorry that happened, but sometimes those split ends just sneak up on you, you have to make sure you take of them when they happend, and not wait so long to trim them.:ohwell:

I have the same problem. I just cut an inch off my hair. Im natural too and only straighten every couple of months and it seems like everytime I do it I need a trim. I used to airdry only and will be incorporating a little more heat in my regimen to keep my ends from knotting. Im also making sure I put castor oil on the ends a few times a week.

I know you are upset but getting rid of those split ends is for the best. Had you not, the hair would have continued to split. Although we want long hair we want healthy hair too! Since you didn't say that your hair was damaged I assume that the ends are you only problem. Since you have gotten rid of them, you can focus on babying them and protecting your length. Also, your hair will grow back in no time with those split ends gone:yep:

Thanks!
I realise this is a tireless topic, but dammit it's the most irritating hair issue I have to face! SL...AGAIN?!! WTF!!!

Like keedah said, I hardly straighten...once a month IF THAT! But my ends have me whipped like a SOB :ohwell:

I'm sorry you had to chop so much off. I had been having ends issues as well. Thinking you're doing the bestt hing for your hair by not using heat but in the end the knots create splits which means cutting some off. I have cut about 2-3" this year alone because of this issue. I know others suggest moisturizing the ends, etc but I haven't found that to work. The only thing I'm finding that works is to gently blowdry and flatiron...anything to keep the hair semi straight so they don't knot. Like I said I haven't had anything else work on my 4b/a hair. :ohwell:

My ends did not like baggying....not saying that's your problem...but I did get ragedy ends when I gave baggying an honest try.

yeah "WOOOOOOOOO-Saaaaaa"

BREATHE!

Okay, you calm?

Another deep breath.

Okay *chews on pencil* Here's what you do. Take one for the team. Get a nice clean trim or cut - however severe the situation is. Then think about what hair practices could cause your ends to become jacked. It has to be something you're doing. Once you figure that out STOP doing it. That way, you can make your hair goals and have healthy ends. For me, I can't baggy, my hair needs protein, and frequent trims/dustings. That's it!

I know it sucks ma. Been there, done that. Set backs suck.

Here's a cyber (((HUG)))

Hang in there

Girl...Health over length is the way to go!!!!!!!!!! if the ends look bad cut them...your hair will be healthy and bouncy and vibrant....if my ends get raggidy looking as it gets longer i will be cutting

Been there...permed that.

And I still have the nerve to wear the relaxed hair in a twist-out or a puff sometimes...well a lot lately. :ohwell:

I'm sorry you had to go through this. :( Do you wear puffs often? This may be the culprit.

Aw ladies...thanks for taking the time out to type out helpful hints!
*sigh* maybe it is my wash n go's....!
I'll try incoporating more protective styles, but dang....I wonder If i'll ever catch a break?!?!?!!!!!

ladies, type out ur ends reggie??? Thanks much :)

Been there...permed that.

:lachen:

me too

OP, I'm in no way recommending relaxing, but just so you know I spent a year on ALL the hairboards researching how to stop or even reduce knots only to have to chop off alot of my progress in the end.

The truth of the matter is that at this point, nobody's figured out a sure fire way to prevent knotting on all hairtypes.

Naturals seem to be divided in 4 factions:
1. Folks who don't get any knots
2. Folks who get them but not enough to make a difference.
3. Folks who get them all over but either don't care or who don't mind constantly trimming.
4. Folks who get them all over and it drives them crazy.

I was in group 4. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the only way I'll go natural again is if I'm cool with keeping my hair cut in a TWA. For me, the longer my natural hair got, the more knotting.

The best way Ive found to avoid knots in my hair is to stop letting my hair shrink. My hair is almost always stretched now and I have been able to avoid knots this way and I used to get them a lot. Immediately after a wash, dry in plaits/braids or on rollers or band. Plaits/braids/banded every night with coconut/castor oil on the ends. Shruken puffs=death to ends.

Bint Yusef, you said it, shrunken wet hair equals knots.

**ETA-lightbulb moment for me, I knew it was wrong, but now I know WHAT was wrong. Thanks Bint!

:yep: Not a one knot has developed in my hair since I stopped wearing puffs and WNG's.

Bingo!!

I can't let my hair shrink because I will get knots...I found this out the hard way.

I kept scrolling looking for some who posted this. I have to dry braided or banded.

I also read in another thread that light protein helps with retention long term. I plan to do a light keratin treatment or other protein every other week followed by a moisture treatment. I did one Saturday and it went well I only lost a few little strands. No breakage.

I will not be allowing my hair to shrink in 2009, I can't afford it.

ETA: There is a girl on the internet that has beautiful natural hair and she said she blowdries her hair now because she gets so fed up with the knots, she has to keep her hair stretched. I was surprised because she's like a 3b/c... I'm a 4 a/b so I can't play if I want length.

i have straightened about 5 times since the BC which was 6 months ago and i had to cut from APL to SL, so i feel your pain. not trimming doesnt seem to work for me and a lot of other naturals i have noticed.

I am a 3b/c and wash and goes cause me lots of tangles and knots. I agree and dont think its a texture issue at all. Since Ive started cowashing at night and stretching my hair I have not had any tangles or knots. This allows me still wear my hair out if I want to.

Yeah its something in the drying process that causes this. I can wear my hair out fine after Ive let it dry in a stretched manner.

I'll chalk it up to a case of "you don't know what you know."

I was thinking wearing puffs and WNGs (all by itself) was the cause of my ends being dry with split-ends and knots. Now I know with 100% certainty it was the knots from the shrunken hair that I was combing through while wet, stretching the strands, making the strands weak, my hair was constantly popping and breaking and this caused all of my natural hair problems (2 years). Shoot, I may have just had my last relaxer the other day.

Bint & Frizzy! OMG!
Thanks for the insight! I thought my wash n go's were fine! I never considered the shrunken state to be a cause of concern:blush:
I'll try more twists and stretched out hair styles....:ohwell:

Damn....this is new. But come to think of it, up until I was 17 my mom always encouraged me to plait my natural hair after a wash and every night to stretch it out! I was always annoyed but she said that stretched hair is easier to style.....I dont ever remember having knots, splits or thin ends back then! Hmmm...that and haitian black castor oil or blue magic was a regular staple in my momma's house :lachen:

(But then again, I was oblivious to health etc and jus used to let my mom sort it out:lachen:)

How long did you let it go without a trim?

I HAVE to trim my ends every 3/4 months otherwise I have the same problem

^^I gave myself a trim in October!
Before that was June...before that was Feb...:ohwell:

Now I had to CUT 2" off.....I'm damn near fed up, y'all jus dont know:wallbash:

What do u do to keep ur ends healthy HQ ???

i totally agree with Faith. when i first went natural i barely straightened my hair. This is actually the first time i've straightened in 2 years! But i'm realizing that ur ends develop knots and splits (at least mine do lol) so i've decided to straighten every 3 months or so and get a trim so my ends continue on this horrible pattern. Don't worry girl, my hair is exactly in the same place urs is (except im no where NEAR BSL!) Don't be discouraged. And continue with sealing ur ends with oil!

I am sorry for your loss , I know it can be a hard blow. I am still trying to find my way through this transitioning jungle. It will all work out. You just got to pull through it. Stay strong!
