Favorite Oils from India

Hi all,

Someone close to me is going to India in February. They asked what I wanted from there. I know the country is known for its oils, silks and silver. I have read a post and a few members mentioned oils from India. Any suggestions??

I like Neem & Amla oils.

I have used Bhringraj, but I could not get used to the smell of the product I bought.

I haven't ever used any "Indian" oils. Honeydew, what do the Amla and Neem do for your hair? I think I remember reading that amla oil has a very strong smell; is that right?

I love love love brahmi oil because it's a mixture of all the Indian oils.

The Eastern Indian culture has used Ayurvedic medicine for 5,000 years to cure a variety of ailments, including hair and scalp problems. Ayurveda was developed by ancient Indian holy men and emphasized prevention over cure.
To stimulate hair growth and natural pigmentation, followers of Ayurveda boiled sage leaves in coconut oil and applied the blackened residue to the hair and scalps.

To treat head lice, Indians mixed Neem Oil (oil extracted from seeds of Margosa or Neem Tree) to the hair and scalp at night and rinsed with an infusion of Neem leaves in the morning. Neem Oil was also used to treat scalp fungi and to promote hair growth.

For an excellent hair conditioner, a centuries old tradition was to soak Fenugreek seeds in water overnight, then apply the paste to the hair. The mixture was left on, then thoroughly shampooed out.
Fenugreek was also used to combat hair loss. Indians mixed coconut milk with a pinch of black pepper and Fenugreek powder.
Amla Oil (made from Indian Gooseberries) boiled in coconut oil was used as a hair tonic to stimulate growth.

Also, as far as the smell, I only use a few drops of it plus other oils added to Emu oil and a butter like Olive or Shea or Mango. There is no strong odor at all.

Oh HoneyDew, Darling...where are you? I've got questions about the Neem Oil...!!

Are you still using it? If so how? If not, why not? I see you were on this antifungal thing before you started the MN...what made you switch? Does the Neem oil smell really badly?

To me it would seem, from the research I've done on Neem Oil, that this would be a really good option for those who didn't want to do use the MN. What are your thoughts?

I'm going to India next week. (I was supposed to have left today, but there was a problem with the flight... maybe it was meant for me to see this thread before I left ) Maybe I should try the oils too...

I got my hands on a small bottle of Neem Oil. I couldn't wait to take a whiff of this stuff! I'm thinking "nothing can be as bad or worse than the MTG"...

After I came to...

This stuff is stank-a-dank ladies!! I mean it probably works well, I'll give it a try but it'll have to be BEFORE my Honey gets home, he will put me out if he gets a whiff of that!! I have a pretty high tolerance for scents, MTG had a smell to me but didn't stink. This stuff? I have no words.

Maybe I cantry making an infusion w/the Neem Powder and Coconut oil, there'd be no odor that way but probably not as potent either....
