For the Newbies of 2008....What was your biggest lesson learned this year?

My biggest lessons I learned this year since coming to LHCF are:

1) to 'keep my hands outta my hair' (no scratching with fingernails or other
implements)

2) moisturize properly (don't overdo it)

3) no gels, petroleum or spritz

4) no sulfates or alcohol in shampoo or conditioning products

THANKS LADIES!

P.S. - I also learned to avoid heat and that my hair can grow without going to my stylist!

My biggest lesson learned is:

  • The importance of Protein/Moisture balance
    [*]Daily Moisturizing/Sealing
[*]Pre-Poo and Cowashing (never knew of that prior)
[*]Eliminating my dependence on blow drying( there is life after air drying :lachen:)
[*]As corny as it sounds, I learned and have gained a really good feeling inside by taking care of MY hair instead of hiding behind weaves because I didn't want to take the time to get the results that I buy in a pack every two wks.

I will ease up on the protein.
DC more often
Moisture and then seal with my oil mix(peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and vitamin E oil)

~I got to find my protein/moisture balance~

there's heaps i've learned that has already been mentioned.

some other stuff i've learnt to do:

a. Dilute shampoo with water and/or conditioner, oils....and ALWAYS deep conditioner after shampoo

b. Full baggying at night without products is great for my hair

c. I Part my hair in sections to detangle, wash, moisturise to ensure all sections are treated the same

d. Bicarb of soda is a great alternative for shampoo

e. I make my own moisturiser with rosemary water (i boil the leaves and leave to steep), glycerine, aloe vera gel.

f. LHCF has been a great investment

I've learned that:
1. Patience and consistency is key to seeing results.
2. DCing 2x/week works for me.
3. Moisturizing daily.
3. Coconut oil is the truth!! (jojoba too)
4. That keeping a hair journal really helps you see what works for you.
5. Keeping my regimen simple works for me.
6. Rollersetting is the bomb!!

First of all, Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize.

I was DCing with my Cathy Howse recipe Mane&Tail conditioner too much. I haven't used this conditioner since joining the MegaTek/OCT challenge. Once a week I moisturize my hair with an enhanced non-protein hair condish and the Homegrown Steam Treatment. During the week I spritz my hair with a rose water, glycerin, castor oil and MSM mix.

I agree with previous posters that finding that protein/moisture balance is key and is also a challenge.

I learned my hair does not like Aloe Vera :perplexed, but it loves Rose Water

I learned that there are so many different hair products because no one product works for every body.

I learned that vegetable glycerin and honey is not bad if used in moderation.

I learned that Biotin and MSM supplements can help you grow stronger and longer hair - even the hair on your body - Ugh! :wallbash: I shave and wax more often.

I learned salt added to a moisturizing conditioner can enhance its benefits.

I learned bentonite clay is not only good for the skin but also the hair.

I learned that some garlic supplements will give me headaches and other will not.

I learned that caffeine will block DHT from the hair follicle, increase the growing time of hair, and either slow down or stop shedding. I have since added coffee to my final herbal hair rinse. And since I'm a coffee addict, the smell doesn't offend me. But I did order caffeine powder. I prefer to drink my coffee.

I learned that I can survive that final cold water rinse. I still don't like it.

I learned how to trim and cut layers into my hair. However, I suggest having a trusted loved one even the back. Mine is a little crooked, but the flat-ironed fried split ends are gone.

I learned how to make my hair kinky straight using the tension blow dry method. If I would have seen the video sooner I probably wouldn't have needed to learn how to trim my hair. :lachen:

I learned that Irish Moss may improve my henna coloring treatments - haven't tried it yet but the Irish Moss powder is on order.

I learned that I am not the only product junkie in the world.

I learned that Hair Zings will keep me from getting bored from putting my hair up in a protective style every day.

I also learned that I am not alone in wanting longer, stronger and healthier hair. After viewing some pics, I learned my goals are achievable.

I learned my hair regimen during the warmer months will be different than the colder months. The key is noting how my hair responds. Yep, my hair speaks to me.:poke:

Since joining this forum, I also learned to not stress out about my hair. Now, I enjoy the ride. :yep:

Wow! I didn't realize I learned so much since joining this forum. I only planned on typing a couple of items but once I got started I kept going. The subscription fee is well worth the return.

Thanks LHCF!
