For Those Who BC'd, Did You do it YOURSELF?

I did it myself but now I wish I went to a professional. As my hair grew out, it didn't have any shape or "flair". At least if I had my BC done by a professional, it would've had a nice shape and continue to have that shape as my hair grew. I plan to go to a professional in the future to get my hair shaped.

I did it myself.. I think it was okay, never felt like it was awkward or lopsided lol. I only transitioned for like 3 months so there wasn't a whole lotta newgrowth. So I had some relaxed ends here and there. This time around I'll be transitioning at least 12 months so the line of demarcation will be very clear. I may have someone help me with the back, but it's definitely gonna be an 'at home' job. I'm always scared that if I go to a stylist they will cut off curls too. :nono:

Wow all of you ladies are truly awesome! thanks so much for your input! I'm even more encouraged to try this myself...I think that was pretty much the concensus thus far :lachen:

And all of you have gorgeous curlies  I can't wait to join ya! But I think I have another question (I'm gonna see if I can get a pic in here too, so bear with me):

I took these a few days ago, and I have more hair than what's in the pics

Because I JUST got the relaxer two weeks ago, wherever I have hair, I have no new growth. I don't wanna shave it off, b/c then it would be shorter than the bald spot regrowth. And I'm really impatient to transition...I wanna be all natural now! lmao...So should I go ahead and attempt the BC now or wait? And if I should wait, how long?

Im very impatient as well but I made it to 8 months out of my year transistion and cut it myself. If you want to BC now and are not confident to wear you hair with the bald spot regrowth, you can always wear you hair braided underneath and wear wigs or half wigs. Hope this helps.

I chopped mine with scissors and then my dad cleaned it up with clippers. Yes my father!!!LOL He thought I had lost my dang mind. Now it's been a year and I have an appointment for my first trim/shape up. My wash and go's are laying lopsided:/

I did it myself with scissors and clippers. I wanted to have it cleaned up by a professional but after a few days I realized it wasn't necessary.

My best friend did mine, she washed and detangled and cut with scissors. I had about an inch or so of hair. I didnt like it. We were at a salon/barber and i had the barber take it all off, i had a ceasar it was all lined up to! Didnt get it touched up after the initial cut.

As someone else said, if your not comfortable with bc-ing now maybe you should wait until your more comfortable with the length, as for the bald spots if theyre from the relaxer theyll fill in quickly.

Good Luck!

I did my own BC and I have mixed feelings. Let me explain. It was one of the most exciting and liberating feelings I've ever experienced. A true sense of control.

HOWEVER! I had color damage and heat damage. In an attempt to cut below the heat/color damage (which was the whole strand) I gave myself a mullet.

I can't say I would change the way I choose to BC because it took me going to 3 different "professionals" to correct the cut. The 1st one being my stylist for over a year and whom I thought knew my hair and situation pretty well.

Not sure if any of this helped at all but to summarize: I jacked myself up and so did 2 other "professionals".

Thanks guys! I think my anxiety has passed and I'm gonna wait to BC, at least for a month. That way I should have enough growth to where I'm comfortable with the short hair...and I think I will attempt it myself! But if I chicken out, I can always set something up w/my mom's hairdresser. My hair is actually growing pretty fast, (normally I'm a super slow grower) but if I chop in about a month I should have a TWA. Plus I'm meeting up with my old roomies for the Rockets/Celtics game next month and I want to surprise them!

So thanks to everyone who helped me out, I'm finally glad to say that I did it! I BC'd! And I did it myself! Wasn't really that hard at all. If anyone's interested I'm gonna post some pics a little later, after the shock has passed. :lachen:

I cut my own hair but I think you should only do it if you are comfortable with it. I transitioned for 18 months after doing my own hair most of the time so I was comfortable with it. If I were to big chop anything under 6 months post I probably would have gone to the salon.

Good luck on your natural journey.

Congrats on your BC. Waiting on those pics :D

i did mine myself, i was taking out crochet braids and just went for the scissors

i bc'd after about 12 weeks. i was stressed about my dead end job and had changed my hair EVERY WEEK for 3 weeks (halfwigs, crochet braids with afro kinky hair, crochet braids with 3c hair)

so i just chopped, all by myself. i left alot of relaxed ends in the back cuz i couldnt see and i wanted to put yarn braids in. but as i braided my hair the relaxed ends would spike up and i just cut them out.

hair grows back, and i have a STAUNCH policy against paying anyone to do something to my hair that i can do for free. so if its crooked, oh well

at least its natural

i bc'd after a year transition.

the two textures were obviously different, and i used two mirrors: one in front and one behind.

i did have to keep cutting off scraggly straight ends. but it all worked out. i got to keep money in my pocket.

I did & that wasn't a good idea. I used clippers and it ended up being all sorts of uneven. It was not cute.

I did mine by myself and I was extremely proud of myself. It felt so liberating! I went to my Grandmother's barber to have it evened out because she wouldn't have it any other way (ie she forced me to)

heck yeah that's one of the main reasons I did it myself...keep my money in my pocket where it belongs...or going toward my latest PJ splurge...gotta feed that habit!

I did my own BC because I was ready and it was about 2:00 a.m. I'd already tried the salon before, when I wanted my long hair wacked off into the Halle Berry cut (as her hair is now) and that was like pulling a mouth full of teeth. The stylists simply could not accept what I wanted to do and she did not want to do it!

I knew that if I went to the salon and got that kind of reaction, I might weaken just from the sheer exhaustion of trying to convince the stylists, so I chopped off my hair and threw it into a nearby trash can. In the morning, my step daughter let out an ear piercing scream when she saw my hair in that can. Afterward, I went to the salon and got it snipped more and shaped up. I was so, so happy.

Congratulations on your BC!!!!!!
