hmm.... how can you classify mastery with all the different hair types we have. lol IMO a natural 2a/2b//3a/3b does not have as difficult a time as a natural 4b/4zzz in taking care of their hair. 3b hair natural = 4b texlaxed in some cases. In that case, mastery should be based on hair type as well shouldn't it?

Oh... that's what they want you to think. They tell you that kinky hair is hard to handle/care for... that's NOT true if you know what you're doing. I don't like that just don't sit well with me... sounds too much like that good vs. bad hair thing...

I grew up with a bunch of mixed girls and white mothers that didn't know how to handle our hair,I was the only type 4 and the only one out of the bunch whose hair was never thriving.
The mothers of my gf's tried to help my mom but eventually had to throw in the towel as well.
Sure we all didn't know how to handle kinky hair but fact is that type 3 was easier to handle and thrived better then my type 4 kinky kair.
My friends to this day don't have much more to do then wash and condition their hair for it to be thriving.

I know there are type 4's with natural and beautiful long hair,I never was one of them tough but I hope to be there one day but what does it hurt to acknowledge that we have different hairtypes that demand different things.

Btw I'm not downing type 3's here,I even have a little patch of type 3 hair but this is somehing I noticed.

I just think this poll is confusing. If Naturals are going natural because they cannot maintain healthy relaxed heads and relaxed heads supposedly cannot handle healthy natural hair. Then IMO - the only true master can only be a relaxed or natural that can and has handled both methods with success.

Well in that case I'm a black belt because i do two natural heads(which I will never relax) everyday and I am a DIYer relaxed head and all of our hair is thriving under my care. So gimmie my black belt.........Thank You.

Easier does NOT equal better, more desirable, or whatever, and she has plenty stresses over her hair. But it does mean that the time and energy required to manage our heads in its natural state are totally different. And it does mean that it takes me much longer to manage my hair because of my hair texture.

For those who are using the term "manage"-how is it that your hair is being "manage" and what attributes do you subscribe to "manageable" hair. Because I think this is what's key and what's MISSING in this dialogue. If your (relaxed/natural) 4a/4b who suggests that manageable hair is easily combed or detangled, I'll have you know that people with long (bsl+) natural hair with this type forgo combing almost altogether. The context in which you are describing these attributes makes all the difference

For me, (and yes I have type 4 textures throughout too) it is a matter of discovering 1) what products work with my hair and ALL of it textures 2) transitioning my mindset (thus my preferences have changed, but if I want straight hair I know it can be acheived 3.) Rollersets & low manipulation styles ARE MY FRIENDS . The rollerset I did in my siggy is on natural hair (dry with leave-ins). I can also do a wet set and it turns out even better, but I was lazy. Generally after I rollerset, I do the saran wrap method (my results are in my fotki btw). With the right Products I have little to no frizz (Fantasia IC & silk scarves do wonders)-and my hair looks relatively silky, when in fact the strand texture is cottony/thready/fine. I can posts some pics if you like

I don't know if u are talking to me too, but I wasn't saying that. I was just saying that u cannot straighten ur hair w/little manipulation and little to no heat if u are a natural type 4 w/kinky, thick hair like mine. Someone suggested that it was possible. What's possible for some may not be possible for all.

That was my point.
We didn't know what to do.
But still my gf's type 3 here was in way better shape then mine.
I don't doubt that with the right knowledge and techniques I should be able to handle my hair but where I need to research and look into fotki's my gf's just have to wash,condition(with whatever random product they find) and of they go.
I'm not saying that all type 3's can deal with their hair like that or that their hair is as long as that some of those beautiful naturals here but there is a huge difference between just throwing whatever at your hair and putting relatively little thought in it and crying everytime your mom has to do your hair b/c it takes forever and is painful.
Again I say knowledge is key but looking at how my mother and her friends all were ignorant and still my gf's hair was relatively simple to handle compared to mine.

From the pics it looks like mostly 3c-I can't help that I have 50-11 million different textures and behaves like 3c . That's the only area that texture is concentrated in, but it is THROUGHOUT my hair .

I think you have lovely hair I'm glad you posted your pics! Healthy hair is beautiful and still an inspiration to me always regardless of type!

GREEN COMB

Green signifies the growth of the seed as it begins to grow into a plant. If you're a green comb girl you're learning to make your own regimen. You see what works and doesn't work for you. The key here is you're strengthening and refining your techniques, regimens, and methods.

I'm choosing the green comb. Although I'm transitioning, it's purely a choice of what works for me, what will give me the results I want (not convinced that everyone should be natural). And although I'm really comfortable in my regimen, I'm still tweaking products and am refining my techniques.

Right on SouthernTease!!!! I'm between Brown, Red, and Black. Folks usually come to me for advise and I'm always doing my or someone's hair. Fixing what someone messed up...educating them on what not to use (too much of ), etc... I don't deposit my money in bank of beauticians... especially by force! My one tru crutch was RELAXING! After 20 years of relaxers...thanks mom, I broke free from that never ending cycle, I'm liberated! I used to think that I couldn't live without a relaxer because my scalp would be soooooooo tender and when I ask my hubby to comb my hair... that's sad And I knew it was tme for a change. And within this last year...I have not been (all nat-chur-al) tender headed ya, I'm thrilled! And I do not have to have a relaxer! But on the other hand, there is always plenty of info and I love keeping myself available to any information.

Sure sure... I'm biased on going natural... it's very progressive... I will venture to say that most women relax because they don't believe they can control their hair... they think relaxing is easier... we can do a poll on that too... but in order to be a BLACK COMB CHICK... you gotta be able to whirl and twirl that flatiron... you have to be a BEAST with BLOWOUTS and rollersets... why get a relaxer if you were truly truly a MASTER? Huh? Huh? Just food for thought. But yeah I do consider people like Cathy Howse and Lisa Akbari all Black Belt Chicks even though they were relaxed at the time they wrote their books, a relaxer was a choice for them not a last result. They could control their hair with or without a relaxer. I think PinkSkates is a Black Belt/COMB... actually I know a few on LHCF...SilverGirl... I could go on but most of the ones I found are featured on my blog... that's why I singled them out. You can have lovely hair, but you might go to the salon and get it done every week... BLACK COMB CHICKS ARE DYIers! They have skills to take care of their own hair, it has nothing to do with how good your hair looks. Plus, it's just my opinion... and who am I???
