Grrr...my mom says its a PHASE!!!!

My mom gets on my nerves!!!! I admit I kinda asked for it though..I came downstairs with my hair all picked out...into a big ol fro and of course she comes with the smart comments. Her and my aunt (she was on the phone with her). My mom goes "Ooooh! I am looking at PittGirl's hair! It looks horrible! Your aunt says that you may get arrested if you go into your new apartment looking like that! Folks will think you are trying to rob the place! Do you go out looking like that??"

I was like, "don't be jealous. Didn't YOU used to wear a fro??"

"I DID but it was SHAPED.You need to put a perm in your head or something. You want me to press it?" (by the way, this is bout the second or third time she asked me this)

"NO."

"What you gonna do with your hair once you get tired of that?"

"I think I wanna get twists."

"Oh....WHATEVER, child! EHATEVER makes you happy. "

Then before she goes upstairs, she goes, "Oh, it'sjkist a phase. Some folks just go through phases."

I shouldda just kept my scarf on...but even then, she be like, "you gonna keep that scarf on yo' head?"

Moms are a trip. She's just being a mom...Sounds like you handled it very well.

Sounds like the same reaction I got from family and friends when I big chopped in May. They gave me crazy looks, every comment on perms and pressing, I just think its not the "norm" so folks be trippin cause u not tryin fit into "their" idea of what u should look like so they be trippin. It was somewhat discouraging for me, but I dont plan on relaxing ever again.....

I haven't had that problem yet with my family. I know that my youngest sister wants to say something smart sometimes but she knows not to. There are at least seven other relatives who are natural so I have some support when I need it.

that's a beautiful thing, mahoganee. i wish more of the ladies here could have that same support... a lot of times people of african descent can be their own worse enemy..lol...

and pittgirl, just be patient with your mom. maybe she will come around when she sees it looking nice, healthy natural and neat in some beautiful twists.....

i think you have made the right decision to embrace your natural hair...

Try to ignore them. I'm sure your hair is beautiful. It made me sad when you said "I kind of asked for it though..." You did not ask to be put down, you were just minding your own business and enjoying your hair. Keep enjoying your hair, wear it in a big ol' fro, wear scarves, wear twists, whatever makes you happy. I just got back from church and the minister's sermon was about joy. Be joyful.:Rose:

I got the same comments from my mom but that was more so before I chopped. Now, she loves my hair and is the first one to have her hand in it. The people at work do say that they want to see my hair straight, and I just tell them that I am not there for their personal amusement.

Pittgirl, I feel you. My mom was very supportive of my BC, but my father comes from one of those families where hair is very important. To him, ideally hair should be thick and long and straight as possible. I bc'd a couple of months before my graduation, so he hadn't seen me until then. I'll never forget his first reaction, "What have you done to your hair?" It is very frustrating that people don't accept black hair in it's natural state. Most of the people I know think I am going through an "afrocentric" phase. But they just don't know I love my hair and I don't plan on changing it anytime soon.

Parents can be a trip sometimes. Anyhow, your fro is your fro. If others don't like it, too bad! I think the world has them thinking that long strait hair is the most important thing and they need time to readjust their thinking. It took me twenty years to learn, so be patient with your mother.
