Hair dresser doesn't think 3c/4a hair can become BSL?

Ok, I was talking to my stylist about something. i can't remember. But he says, "that's why certain people don't have long hair because their oils don't go all the way down to the end of the hair."


I don't know but it seems like he doesn;t think that my hair can be even BSL. It;s kind of hard to try and grow your hair out and have a stylist that doesn't even think it can become BSl let alone longer. I don't know why he believes this because when I first came to him my hair was about 2 inches past APL.

So, I had him apply my relaxer almost 5 weeks ago and I won't be going back to him again because with in 4 month period of going to him he has cut my hair once and trimmed twice. I think he is scissor happy. I am trying to stretch for 3 or more months.


Ok, anyone else have a stylist like this.?

I don't have a stylist at all, but there are way too many examples of women on here with hair past BSL for me to believe that.

No ones hair will get longer if someone keeps cutting it off.

NO, but I would grow my hair to that length and come and see him just to

prove him wrong. My DH thinks the same thing and I cut all of my hair off.

I can't wait until two years have past and show him the truth! Good luck!

Stay away from that stylist. I trust your her will grow as long as you care for it and don't cut it.

I have heard actual stylists say this before too. Saying that african american women can not grow there hair pass a certain length. That is just ignorant, I have sisters and in-laws whose hair is apl and longer. And I know it is their hair! (I have touch and felt)

I was about to post something about this too. I had a hair stylist who was african american. She kept saying that my hair wouldn't grow any longer past my shoulders. She kept mentioning that I had stunted hair growth. I stopped going to her because I think she was scissor happy and the fact that I don't want a discouraging hair stylist. I've been doing my hair mostly, and will get my hair done by a stylist once every six months.

And of couse your hair will have a hard time retaining length, when your stylist keeps CUTTING it. Dump him and find someone else who will help and encourage you to grow and retain your length.

see, my stylist is bi-racial (black and white) in his 60's and does just as many white customers as black. But most of the A_A's that come to him don't have BSL hair from what I've saw.

I don't know how stylist (black) ones can think A-A all have the same type of hair knowing that many can have hair varying in several textures. I'm assuming they think kinky hair can't grow and thus kinky hair is attributed to all African Americans.


Shortdub-did your husband say this and how did he say it? He never saw an AA woman with long, natural hair? I mean BSL length.

If so, where do you live and has he ever seen any ladies on here?

I actually was on my laptop at my last appointment and he saw a pic of a lady while taking a customer to the shampoo bowl. he said that this site was just trying to sell products and didn't believe one woman's progress pictures. The lady had wen from neck length to shoulder length and thought it was something like those Dr. Miracle ads. I wasn't trying to argue with him and just told him they don't sell products and left it at that.

That's the main reason I don;t like sharing my hair journey with 99.9% of people.

Chica _canella, your hair dresser is just wrong like so many other hair dressers and people in general. I don't think anyone my entire life (including me) believed I could grow hair to sl or apl, and certainly not to bsl. I am a few months from shoulder-length, I may even be there already, I'll have to see when I flat-iron it. I finally have no doubt I can reach apl and I am optimistic about bsl. Strange isn't it, that when he met you you were close to bsl and yet he still chooses to not believe bsl is possible for you? It's like he keeps cutting your hair to prove he is right and you are wrong. I'm glad you will not be returning to him.

ETA to answer your question: I think every hair stylists I've had had similiar beliefs as your hair dresser.

Hah! I hate hearing people say things like this. When we were younger my sisters and I all had hair to our waists (before relaxers got to our heads). The youngest is 3b/3c, the middle is 4b-z, and I'm 4a/3c, so it's not like we have 'good' hair. We all had kinky hair, but our mom took great care of it.

Even with relaxers our hair is easily bra-strap length unless we choose to cut it. I'm transitioning and I'm certain that I will get to waistlength once my hair is fully natural.

People like him make me sooo angry because he does hair for a living and he is reinforcing the belief that black women can't have long hair.

Yeah, that's why I always say that many black women can have real APL length hair or longer but they choose to hold on to their beliefs that you have to be mixed. I made a thread about that before. i showed my friend some pics of the ladies with long kinky hair and she said they must be mixed. I said, so if I had MBL hair you would say the same thing about me? She said yes. Even though I am 3/4 black and 1/4 other I don't think I would tell anyone once I reach that length just because of the fact they would already assume so. I think I would be helping to break alot of myths. not that I am denying the other part of me but would hopefully give hope to other African American ladies.

I have darker skin and 4a hair, and even though some African Americans have finally admitted that I'm 100% African American some of my African and other African American friends are now convinced that my ancestors must be East African I was like damn...the only reason black women have had short hair in the past is because no one was doing research about our hair and we were being passed on misinformation. Damn. This irritates me so much.

Please leave him and don't look back. You'll definitely never be bsl if you keep going to his simple arse. Your hair will grow and as long as you give it what it needs you will retain length. I have known "all black" women with butt length 4z natural hair. I am so sick of this mentality it is complete bull-ish. I am so disgusted with our people. It seems that we have gone back in time. In this day and age it should be known that black people can have very long hair,although there is some genetic influence on length, you might just have to know what to do to retain length. Arrrrgh!!!!

From personal experience, I say leave those people stuck in the self-hatred mentality alone.

This irrates me to no end! It's the same as people saying someone has "good" or "bad" hair- - - no it's "healthy" or "damaged" hair. This myth and the misinformation of haircare in the black community is why so many black women don't have long hair- if you think it's hopeless, why bother? And anyone, regardless of hair texture, can grow their hair, so long as they take care of it and haven't reached their terminal point.

Drop your sylist and don't look back.

I believe it can be done and not just because that is my hair texture combination exactly either! I have had MBL hair when I was a child and it was virgin hair so I know that I can get back there again and so can you!

My former stylist is like this. She wasn't willing to see how long my hair can get. When I told her that I don't want my hair to stay the same length she yelled "Some hair just doesn't get any longer!". Okay, 1) There's no need to get upset and yell and 2) Surely my hair can grow past SL-APL.

Good for you for deciding not to go back to him. I used to let my stylist trim every 6 weeks, and when I started asking her to trim every 12 weeks she would overreact and get upset.

At this point it's been 5 months since my last trim. I got a touch-up from a new stylist last week and she did not pressure me to trim. I saw other clients at that salon with long hair, something I did not see at my previous salon.

I told a white co-worker concerned about her hair to try NEXXUS products so she has started. I told her why my hair is always hidden...told her "I will reveal my hair sometime near year's end when it's past bra strap length." She laughed...don't know if she thought the possibility preposterous or what...but she'll know it 'aint no joke when she sees it for herself. I'm more determined than ever to tend and grow.

She probably doesn't think it's preposterous, but if I weren't on LHFC, and someone said they were hiding their hair and wouldn't reveal it until the end of the year, I'd think it was sort of funny too.

You definitely need a new stylist. Are there any LHCF stylists in your area? I love my new stylist, she's on the board and she takes great care of my hair.
