Anyone wear headwraps regularly? Can to share where you purchase and your favorite style. What do you wear underneath to protect your hair?

My sister did the big chop (after multiple attempts to go natural) and started wearing a headwrap. It didn't last too long since she got braids; however, I'm interested in trying headwraps. Most seem to be made of cotton to give the wrap some structure, I guess. My sister wore a simple rear bun style using a black wrap but I'd go with something more colorful.

I'm not too worried about wearing them to work since I work from home most of the time.

I wear a silk beanie from Pretty Antoinette underneath. My favorite style is a basic knot in the front. I have good luck with purchasing from Amazon with using the search words head wrap / hair turban.

We had 2 silk beanies and I haven't been able to find either one. I bought a large one for DH and a small one for myself when I was wearing wigs.
I may need to reorder.

This is right up my alley! I have started wearing head wraps regularly. I personally just buy scarves that are light weight, that won't give me a headache. I get different materials. I prefer giant scarves that I can fold into long rectangle or triangle. I just buy regular scarves from the stores on the ground, that have are inexpensive, with pretty patterns and colors.

I have my hair in bantu knots, so I wear a wrap style with the knot on top or to the side. My hair is super greasy and it will stain my beautiful scarves. I wear a plastic shower cap on my hair. I secure it by wrapping a nylon knee-hi around the perimeter of my head. Then I put on a doo-wrag that complements the scarf color. Then, I put my scarf on. I am still learning how to do wraps and select scarves.

I got the idea while away for Christmas. I washed and deep conditioned my hair with a plastic cap and had to run out.
I decided to throw on my scarf that I usually wear to bed with my sunglasses. People thought it was an accessory.
It wasn't anything intricate, just my usually side tied.

I would love to try this as well. I remember watching Good Times and Willona had one on that matched her skirt and top. It was so beautiful! If I knew how to tie one the way she did I would certainly be able to wear it to work.
 
I wear them sometimes. I want to start wearing them more so I can do low manipulation/protective styling. I use any of my fashion scarves, I have some scarves I got from the African Festival of the Arts that we have here in Chicago on Labor Day weekend every year, and I also have some lengths of African print fabric that I bought from Jo-Ann Fabrics. I LOVE wrapping my hair. I've watched a lot of YouTube tuts and realize that you can't mess it up. However you fold and tuck is great as long as you like it. And as long as it doesn't fall down.

ETA: I forgot to say that I use a stretchy nylon cap, from the ethnic hair section that guys wear under their football helmets or hats, under my scarves.

I didn't realize that a gele was for everyday wear. I've only seen them worn for weddings/events.
They are so intricate with the pleats that it seems like a lot of people have the gele tied for them instead of DIY.

This one is fabulous!
 
I wear head wraps all the time!! I love them. I get *most* of my wraps from Fanm Djanm (www.fanmdjanm.com). I love her wraps because the quality is excellent and they are a good size for my extra large watermelon of a head. The only thing is... her wraps can get a bit pricey. I never spend over 28.00 dollars for a wrap from her although she has some on her site for upwards of 40.00 something dollars. 28.00 isn't really in my price range but for me I don't mind splurging a little for quality wraps. And sometimes she sends out coupons and if you spend a certain amount you get free shipping, so that's a plus.

There's also The Wrap Life (www.thewraplife.com). I've never ordered from them, but I've been eyeing a few of their pieces. They may be a dollar or two cheaper per wrap than Fanm Djanm. I've also thought about purchasing fabric from my local fabric shop... but one thing I absolutely HATE is when the fabric is not printed on both sides... I HATE THAT with a passion because when I wear my wrap the patterning doesn't appear uniform and I don't like it :look: but that's just something that I'm anal about. Most Ankara print fabrics that I've seen at the fabric shop aren't printed on both sides, so I haven't really experimented with fabric store fabrics as of yet.

My favorite way to style them is usually with my kinky curly u-part wig and a top knot... but I like to experiment with various wrap styles. Now that I'm not working in corporate America anymore :look:, I'm wearing them almost daily. I plait my hair in 10 plaits after I wash it weekly and if I go out, I throw on some makeup, a statement necklace or bold earrings, and my wrap and I'm good to go! Oh, I usually wear one of those satin do-rags underneath my wrap to protect my hair. Here's a picture of a wrap I wear quite frequently from Fanm Djanm:

I call them all gele, but thats just me. There is the gele tied for weddings and events

So I sort of ordered two more fabric pieces for a total of 4 starting up the years' look. My sister wants me to sell her my best one so she can make something else -_-..... I guess. If I can find another one.

As far as pattern on both sides, thats a great thing!

I used to wrap my hair a lot when I was in college. I would buy my material (2-3 yards) from an Afro-centric book store and a sweet Ghanaian lady who would sew the ends for me to keep them from fraying. Sometimes, if I was trying to coordinate a wrap with an outfit I would buy the material from the fabric store. I would usually wear bun wraps or wraps like this:

@KammyGirl, if I wore a bun wrap, I left my ears out like above. If I wore the wrap going up, I would cover my ears because I have little elf ears that poke out and it looked strange.

This is the way I bun wrap


This looks like it would be heavy, but it's a good tutorial


This one will give you an idea of the motion required to wrap like the first picture. The method is to twist and roll like a bantu knot.

I have been playing with fabric tonight and didn't even realize it wasn't printed on both sides. Looking closely, I can tell though.
The cotton Ankara fabric is a bit stiffer than I expected. I presume it will soften after washing. I did buy fabric with serged edges so it doesn't fray.
 
Wearing my duku as I read this. I normally wear a satin bonnet underneath and I have it tied like the lady in yellow, in the OP. These really save time when you are out of hairstyle ideas
 
I wish I could wear these. Our network just recently revised our dress code and I can no longer wear my headwraps.
