HELP!! Can naturals do a rollerset??

I haven't been successful in doing a rollerset to wear my hair straight, but I can do a rollerset. I tried doing it with the magnetic rollers with the clips and it looked okay, but it was VERY frustrating and it took a VERY long time becasue I had to keep re-rolling. I found the easiest way for me is to use the magnetic rollers with the snap on covers and make sure that my hair is soaking wet (I use Motions Leave In Conditioner and diluted Lottabody setting lotion). I get very good results (sorry I don't have any pics to post with me right now). If any 3c naturals have found a product or method that gives a good silk wrap to make the hair straight after a successful rollerset PLEASE post the instructions or pm me. I've can do everything up to the silk wrap. I get a good rollerset (I use 1 1/4 inch magnetic rollers with the snap on covers), but after I comb through it it's so puffy that silk wraps hardly help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Nappy85- I love your hair.

I found that I needed larger rollers to work with my hair. The small ones I had didn't work as well.

That was extremely helpful!! but i would not know the 1st thing about using those straight picks to keep a tight set??? how do u put those in??
i will check out that thread too!
Thanks sooo much!

You can also get Annie mesh rollers from http://store.yahoo.com/texasbeautysupplycom/ann1021.html, along with roller picks http://store.yahoo.com/texasbeautysupplycom/ann3119.html

They ship fast and their prices are reasonable. It might also help to look at this thread, where a lot of ladies on the board had a discussion on mesh rollers.

hold hair very taut and wrap around roller
when the middle column is finished
start on each side and follow the same pattern

THANKS!!! :) I only used the smaller rollers because when I was younger my Mom used to give me rollersets with the small yellow magentic rollers with the covers. They made my hair very smooth, but it had a tight curl. I was hoping to get the same smoothness and be able to comb it out and wrap it for a straight look...not that great of an idea lol (it was somewhat straight though).

Wow that looks beautiful!!! Thanks for the tips!!! I will try it!

what happens after u comb it down, can u actually wrap it with out it bushing up?/

definitely!
the key is to hold the hair very taut while rolling
also the gel smooths my hair down
and dry the hair completely
i use the magnetic rollers with the snap on covers also

i'm actually overdue to try this again
it's been a while....

Hey, I found these:

This was the link I was going to suggest as well. (long-healthy-hair-advisor.com) I have not had the best success with rollersetting since my transition but I went to a new salon in my area last week and the lady rollerset my hair (I've been transitioning over a year now) on purple and red rollers in 15 minutes and set me under the dryer in 50 minutes and when she took the rollers out, she only had to touch up with the flat iron in about 3 spots. The ENTIRE length of my hair was just as straight as if I had a relaxer; not a kink anywhere in sight. My NG is way curlier than I thought (probably 4a instead of the 3c i initially thought) and when she told me she could do it, I was really doubtful. She told me she even has a client that has almost butt length hair that she rollersets only as well.

Her secret? She told me she uses very thin sections. If you use thinner sections, and make sure it is wet before you wrap it around the roller, it will lay flatter on the roller instead of bunching up. She did a mohawk set and it only took 15 minutes. I was was in and out of there in an hour and a half when she did it like that and I told her that I have never been in and out of the salon in that short length of time even when getting relaxers.

My hair was soooooo full of body and I maintain it nightly with one jumbo flexirod. I am trying to see how long this will last (it will be a week this tuesday) and I will be working this salon into my regular routine once I become fully natural. She even told me if I wanted, she would show me how to rollerset it as well as the proper technique for flat ironing. I wanted to take some pictures so bad but broke my camera and don't know that I will be getting another one anytime soon.

I am going to make an attempt to try again using her suggestions (thinner selection to make the hair lay flatter on the roller and also for shorter drying time), but I just hope i don't get as frustrated as I normally do. (didn't have any issues wrollersetting when I was fully relaxed)

Hope this helped some.

I went out and brought the DVD ( by macherieamour) that all the girls on here are talkin about, I brought a new sit under hair dryer, curlers, the good clips, the right combs and all the fixings to have a great rollerset. I watched the DVD and attempted.. but my hair did not want to stay on the curler when i tried to roll it up.. I got 4 curlers in and they were all of a hot mess! HELP!! Can we rollerset our hair?

Most definitely! I do them all the time and they're a great way to retain length
I use rollers w/ the clamps AND bobby pins to secure my rollers tautly.

Great suggestions lady. I have too have been struggling with rollersetting since transitioning. I will def be trying these techniques this weekend.

are there any 4b natural who have had success with roller sets to wear their hair straight???

Yep me! I write about it all the time. I actually do rollersets 2-3 times a week and I made tremendous progress on retaining lenght. Shedding is non-existent now.

Really ? Thats awesome! Do you have any pics or tips you could share?

Go old school - USE END PAPERS!:yep:

You wet the ends so they are dripping and fold the end paper over the bottom of the hair. Make sure your curls are smoothed out with a fine tooth comb in the end paper, bc this is how your hair will dry. The end paper then becomes wet and will serve to smooth your ends AND grip the roller to help you get a tight roll. My hair's not natural, but it's thick and that's how I roll. It doesn't really add too much to drying time and you can tell when your hair is getting dry bc the end papers will start to dry and make a "crackle" sound!:lachen:
