Hey everyone! I'm new and this is my first time posting. I have been an avid lurker on this site for a couple of years and decided to finally take the plunge and subscribe!! :grin::grin:

Some history about me~

I have been relaxed for probably over 10 years and went natural about two years ago after transitioning for a year.

Sometime towards the end of last year I got increasingly frustrated with my hair and really wanted a change so in January of this year I decided to go to my local barber and shave it off.

6 or so months later I have a burning question to ask all you knowledgeable folks (which I'm sure many of you are tired of) and that is... what's my hair type? Now I know that I don't have a lot of growth to make an accurate judgment, but any guesses are appreciated

Welcome! Your are 4a/b with most of your 4a texture in the back. Your hair is similar to my natural hair and texture configuration. It looks very healthy and shiny. May you get a lot of support and feedback on the forum; everyone is great here. :yep:

I say cottony based on the way light is reflecting off the strands in most of the pictures. It appears to be more of a sheen. With silkier strands, the light reflects more as shine.

Curl pattern and texture are often lumped together. But I've seen every size curl with each type of texture.

SEMO Wow! That was such a detailed response. Thank you!
Do you see 4A all around with just different textures? Because I noticed a smaller curl size as well as a more cottony texture in front.

Looking at the pics again, the back of your head seems to have a silkier texture and slightly bigger curls.

I transitioned past the twa stage before cutting off my relaxed ends, but I have multiple textures and curl sizes on my head that weren't fully apparent until my hair got longer (some curls started to appear bigger as my hair got longer and depending on how I combed it).

So it's hard to determine with certainty since you still have a twa, but there may be some 3c-ish curls back there. I'm not big on the hair typing system per se. But I think people may label the hair in the front of your head as 4b b/c of the cottony texture. But when I think of 4b pattern (and I'm not an expert), I think of more of a zig zag that does not form a curl without manipulation (ex. a twist out or perm rods).

I've learned over the years being natural that texture and curl pattern/size can appear very different depending on length and styling. Below are some example from my own hair journey (I apologize in advance for spamming your thread with pics, lol).

Just for reference, I consider my curls to be 3c/4a (more cottony in some parts and silkier in others).
