to try a blow dryer with a comb attachment. My sister-in-law's hair was the same length as mine the last time I saw her. We have the same hair type too. I saw her yesturday and her hair is growing close to her midback

. Of course I asked her to break down her haircare regime and she told me she hasn't had a relaxer in two years although her hair was bone straight. (we are both 4a hair types) She finally told me that she uses a blow dryer with comb attachment to straighten her hair. Afterwards she wraps it (dry) and covers it with a scarf. All this time I knew I was doing something wrong or missing a step in my haircare regime. I'm soooo happy!!! I hope I get as much progress as she did.

My girlfriend with the healthiest, thickest hair of anyone I know personally also uses a blow dryer with comb attachment to straighten her hair. She applies John Frieda serum during the process.

Her curl pattern is looser than mine though. (she's a type 3a or b.) Her new growth would straighten easily, but I'm afraid my 4a tight coils would just snap. I realized disturbing amounts of hair loss when I tried spacing out relaxers via Dominican blow out, which is essentially the same process.

Results will depend on hair texture. I doubt a blowdyer alone could get my hair bone straight if I hadn't relaxed in 2 years. Instead I'd have a stretched-out fro.

Are you going to try it?

Im going to go back to using the comb attachment for my blow dryer. My hair grew long still when I was younger and my mom used this on my hair. So if I want a straight style instead of a rollerset, im using my comb attachment

i have gotten my 4ab thick naps close just shy of bone straight with a comb attachment, john friedas frizz ease and yes, dax grease. im scared of all that heat though. but it worked!

When I did my relaxed hair, I always used the blowdryer with the comb attachment...and I don't mean the basic blowdryer with that big comb attachment that you buy separately. I mean the kind that comes with 3 pieces - a finer tooth comb, a wide tooth comb, and a brush (never used). It's so much easier to manage than a regular blowdrier with a comb attachment. I don't see how people use those! I was always able to get my hair really straight with those blowdriers. When relaxed, I never flatironed. Only blowdried. Give it a try! They are usually made by Vidal Sassoon.

As a transitioner, I wouldn't do this blowdrying until I'm almost dry b/c the actual "air" from the blowdrier would just poof my natural hair out!

you never asked or did you. I also use a blow dryer comb attachment to keep my hair straight. its a willie morrow. comb attachments are important because they keep your hair straight which allows the oil or whatever you may use to go all the way down the strand of your hair. I also read in Andre talks hair he mentions he has a method of keeping the hair straight with a blow dryer also I cant remember the exact words but I know he did if anyone can elaborate

I have used a blow dryer with a comb attatchment and my hair gets very straight. I have a pic of the blowout in my album.

a blow dryer only gets my hair straight on high heat, and im trying to minimize heat at this point.

Wow ! I have type 4a/b and I was just praying for an alternative to relaxers and yet still have straight hair. Tell me more!!! What type of regimen does she have?

Please be very careful with the blowdryers with comb attachments if you use them on high heat settings, ladies. To use them, you have to put the dryer right up against your scalp and hair, which can cause a lot of damage in the long run.

I have a mix of 3a/b and I'm scared to death to use a blowdryer in my hair. When I was younger I would attempt to blowdry my naturally curly/wavy hair straight and ended up using too much heat so I'll just stick to doobies.

Thanks everyone for your replies

Gmaimai, I'm still squeezing the information out of her but she faithfully uses Pantene Relaxed and Natural shampoo and conditioner. She said she uses Blue Magic Hair grease (yep, that's what she said) and blow dries it with her comb attachment. She gets her ends trimmed professionally but other than that she really does not goto the salon. Her hair is not only long but it's really healthy and strong. I need to find out how often she washes and if she deep conditions. I'll keep you posted on that.

What are "doobies"? I've heard some one else say this too but I don't know what it is.

I am absolutely terrified of the blowdryer! I am 4a/b and I lost so much hair from using the comb attachment on the blow dryer. It could have just been me, and how I was doing it. Or it could have been the excessive heat, but I'm really too afraid to find out. All of that heat and tugging and pulling, just seems dreadful!

But, good luck ladies, and please let us know how it turns out.

Doobies are rollersetting your hair to dry it, then wrapping it for a sleek, straight look. I haven't learned how to do doobies yet.

I'm not saying that blowdriers don't cause damage but I used one faithfully every two weeks and my hair was very healthy and long. Sure, I got split ends (minimal amount front heat sytling in general)that I kept neatly trimmed every 2 months but I didn't have anything close to damage. However, since most people here are trying to grow their hair long, I would definitely not suggest using any type of blowdrier once a week!

I can only use a blowdryer with a comb attatchment, but also only after a fresh relaxer, and then I still have to flat iron. On the other hand I have a friend who only blowdrys and her hair is silky straight...

My hair looks just like yours after doing a blowout with the comb attachment! I use low-medium heat and it doesn't take long to straighten. I'm a natural 4A.

When this one girl would braid my hair, she would blow dry it out first on high heat for about 10-15 min. My hair would get almost as straight as if I did a press.

My hair has reverted back every time my hair has been blowdried but I promised myself that I wouldn't use any heat for 1 year. Besides, I think you take a chance of your hair not reverting back to its natural state every time you blow dry. I found myself holding my breath when it was time to wash.

I use a comb attachment and blow dryer about 99% of the time after washing. the trick is drying the hair underneath first and working your way up in layers until you reach the top layer. Most people end up frying their hair because they're trying to get the heat from the blow dryer to go through their top layer all the way thru to to bottom and get all their hair dry at once
nono.gif
big NONO!!!! you WILL be looking a hot mess soon enough if you insist on doing that. But yeah, it's not about using heat, it's using it correctly and sparingly. Like for me this is the only time i use heat is when i blowdry. So i'm not gonna run around feeling all guilty about it. Now if i was flat ironing, using curling irons and stuff...then i might not do it.....but i dont use that stuff so blowdryers unite!!!!

I have the same style blow dryer. IMO, it's much easier (than the other kind that most salons use). I have never used the brush attachment, and I never ever will.

Can you give some pointers? I'm a complete klutz when it comes to using a round brush while blow drying.

This is the best way to blow dry one's hair imo (working your way up in layers).

i have the ones that come with 3 peices too and i just recently started blowdrying again and there was a lot less breakage then when i airdry and flat iron.

Thanks for bumping this thread! (Been in Off-topic too much!

) I just learned that I need to buy a different blow dryer because the one I have did not come with attachments and EVERY time I buy one for it, it breaks in my hair! I also learned to start from the back of my hair (uh, what the heezy was I thinkin'?!) when blow drying. Maybe there is a use for my blue magic grease and my 26 bottles of New Image Damage Thermal Active Conditioner!

When I flatironed my hair over the weekend, I used my comb attachment blowdrier. I used the high heat setting and the smallest comb attachment. (Actually, I started off with medium and then ended each section with high.) It was tiring though with all the natural hair though my relaxed hair straightened out easily. When my hair started to feel hot to the touch, I stopped and moved on to another section to avoid damage. I never smelled anything burning luckily! I think I am pretty good with blowdrying since I used to do it all the time. It just a lot harder with 1/3 natural hair!

After blowdrying, I let my hair cool before using my flat iron on heat setting 15 (Jilbere from Sally's). Then I glided through my hair twice. The second time, I didn't even go all the way through my relaxed hair b/c it didn't need it.

Anyhow, the blowdrying helps me to decrease my waves when trying to wear my hair straight. If I let it airdry too long, the waves "set" in and are impossible to get out. I plan to straighten my hair again in 2 weeks b/c I am getting a trim. This past weekend was just practice!

well, I think I've finally fiqured out how to have this blowdryer with comb attachment works for me. This is my summer regimine and my hair is soooo healthy and strong right now:
wash hair 1x a week with Pantene R&N
deep condition with elasta qp fortifying conditioner under hooded dryer w/ plastic cap for 10 mins.
rinse out conditioner
pat dry (so it's not dripping wet)
second conditioner Pantene R&N conditioner
let sit on hair for 5-10 minutes
rinse out
pat dry
spray diluted lottabody (very watered down)
Pantene detangler
comb (carefully) with a wide toothed comb starting at the ends and working my way up.
Once the tangles are out I then treat my ends with profectiv Healthy Ends
Blow dry starting at the nape and working my way up slowly in layers on high heat with a blow dryer that is (conair ion shine-1875voltage) IMO the higher the voltage the hotter the air, and the hotter the air the better it straightens. This blowdryer with comb attachment looks like this:

(hopefully this image will work)
Anywho, in the middle of drying I add my wonder oil about a quarter size-maybe a little more and continue to blowdry.
After it's dry I part my hair down the middle and put my hair in two french braids. (this is my summer style) I don't add anymore heat to my hair until my next hair washing regimine (which is every week) When I get tried of the braids I take my hair down and it's extra wave and soft. I'm also stretching out my relaxer for three months. So far it's been a month and a half (that halfway point).

For my daily hair regimine I usually take my braids down evryday and comb my hair with my wide toothed comb. Then rebraid.
