I've been reading a lot of posts where this is described and I think I might have fine hair but I don't really know. My hair is not really thick and I'm not sure of the type it's a 4 something. I know that my hair gets weighed down with creamy moisturizers so I have to use a spray moisturizer and a little oil. I am relaxed but not bone straight my hair still has a slight wave when wet. So how do you all know you have fine hair? Is it something you just know or do you discover over time? Sorry if this sounds silly and thanks for any replies.

First, some clarification: Fine hair is not necessarily thin hair, although the two often come together. Thin hair means simply that you don't have a lot of strands on your head — nothing you can do about it, because it's programmed at birth.

Some people have thick hair that's considered fine because it's silky and smooth, without the curls or roughness that provide texture. In either case, the problem is that the hair tends to lack volume, and that's what we're looking to get.

I'm sure there will be some more input coming...

Find Your Strand size:
A strand of frayed thread is about the thickness of a medium sized strand of human hair. If your strand is larger than this, then your hair is thick. If your strand is smaller than this, hair is thin, or fine..

Thin & Fine Hair

The terms that describe both "low density" and or "thin, fine" hair may become confused at times.

The subtle difference in terms is best compared to two forests : one forest has a stand of sparsely scattered trees throughout (low density). The other has a population of trees that, although slender (thin or fine), is densely populated.

Either condition usually results in "limp" hair that lies flat on the head, along with suseptiblity to damage by too much processing or styling.

On more question-Does the relaxer change your strands to fine/thin or is that just how your hair is? I had what I considered to be pretty thick full natural hair and now it's kind of limp relaxed hair.

My hair is fine. i woud describe it as being susceptible to breakage at the drop of a hat if I am no Extreemely careful with it. I can handle it daily, but it takes longer.

Some people has STRONG hair that can take a lot of handling-- Macherieamour comes to mind.

Overall, I have a lot of fine hair with some sprinkles of strong hair.

The protein treatments have definetly helped me to have stronger hair but I was just wondering if the relaxer process continually thins your hair out. Does that make sense. I know it changes the texture.

so confusing
im finally trying to figure out what kind of hair i have
i always assumed my hair wasn't fine
im not so sure why probably because its thick and i thought thick is automatically not fine
but can you figure out what type of hair you have after a relaxer?
my hair is way thinner when its freshly relaxed...

It is my personal belief that misuse of relaxers will thin out the strands of your hair. I have only my own head to substantiate this theory. My hair line, which I habitually, although not purposely, overlap has incredibly fine hair. While my crown which is normally under processed has thicker strands.

I'm sure others have opinions on this as well.

i have fine hair and i am scared of heat. it can appear to be thick, but it really doesn't take much to straighten it. sometimes i would like to straighten my hair, but i just can't take that chance. my hair was the same way, when it was relaxed.

I am pretty sure that I have fine strands. There is a thread on here somewheres that measures around your ponytail...

my hair is thin i am trying henna now to get it to look fuller hope it work my hair got thinner as i got older lol

I personally dont think a thin ponytail means fine hair. It may just mean that you dont have a lot of hairs on your head regardless of strand diameter.

Fine hair is slender, very light weight, feather like, and whimsy. The circumference of the hair at its cross section is not a big as a strand of thick hair.

The first section of hair strands can help show the difference. All of the hair is the same length yet the first strand of hair is not as big or fat so to speak.

Yes fine hair is thin STRAND wise but it doesnt mean ALL of your hair has to be thin to have fine stands.

In other words, if the diameter of a hair strand is 70 micrometers, the diameter of a fine strand would be 50 micrometers or less. (just a numerical example)

I agree with the other ladies. Fine is describing the diameter of the hair. The best way to determine is to take a piece and hold against the light. I have fine hair, it is just a lot of it and it is 4b? (no kinda pattern) and it appears to be course but cannot take a relaxer. When comparing it to my sister, daughter or a piece of thread, it is very thin and hard to see.

I have very fine hair, but high density--that is, the diameter of my strands is very small, but I have a lot of hairs on my head.

I read somewhere that the way to determine thickness is to take a normal piece of sewing thread, and untwist the two strands. If an average strand of your hair is thinner than the single strand of (untwisted) thread, then you have fine hair.

When my hair is in its natural state, you can't really tell that it's fine, but once a relaxer hits my head, it looks horrible...thin, fine, limp and lifeless. I don't think my strand diameter actually changes, it's just that when the relaxer takes away my kinks, it also takes away my volume, so all you can see is my fine hair.

This is me! I have mainly fine hair that is somewhat weak with a little strong hair mixed in. My density is medium low...so I have to be extremely gentle with handling my hair.
