How is it that you are OBLIVIOUS to when the stylist is cutting your hair?

I read sometimes on here that some ladies are caught off-guard with the cutting and trimming action, and only happen to hear their hair being cut, or some ladies realize only much later that their hair was trimmed whilst in the chair.... etc.

Are you sleeping in the chair?

Are you not facing the mirror?

Does the stylist use ultra small trimmers or something?

Please explain it to me!!! Because I would go ape on someone who did that to me.....

C) It seems many women sacrifice professionalism for loyalty because "I've been going to her for years"

It is a VERY rare event that I go to the salon, but when I do, I don't cut corners or roll the dice on my hair care. I go to a Black Owned & Staffed High End Aveda Certified Salon I've been going to since high school. They use Aveda primarily on my hair from the shampoo to the shine finishing serum but the only other products you'll find will be Mizani, Keracare and Affirm products. The stylists there are classy and polite and take direction very well, I speak to them about the best ways to wash and detangle my natural hair ask them what their plans are for that step.

When it comes to trimming thats when I really dont play. I tell them I want a TRIM nothing more and even use my hand to show how much I'm willing to cut off and I re-emphasize it to them, they make sure to show me how much they trim off as they go and from there we have a great time and just chat.

They wish I would come in more often but they know I style and deep treat on my own so they tell me they miss me and have a great year lol

I agree with this...for me to BLOW UP on you or put you on BLAST....you have to make me mad....and this is more of a disappointment because I try so hard to retain length just to have it whacked off.

I've been having this same issue with my stylist at Great Clips. I found her and fell in with her so my mom and daughter started going to her as well.

After coming to LHCF my hair started growing like a weed and she would ALWAYS compliment my hair (health, strong, growth rate, etc.) but for the past 3 visits I would leave out and discover later that she did more than dust my ends. It didn't dawn on me as to how she was getting away with this until my daughter went with me and when we got in the car....she said, "Mom! She cut so much of your hair and I was thinking to myself, wow moma's going to be mad!! You were just talking and laughing and really enjoying yourself" I LOOKED IN THE REVIEW MIRROR :gunner7: but that's against tha law

So I think another reason well I know another reason for me is we engage in conversation, gossiping, etc. LOL and I'm not paying any attention to her. I will say one time I thought I saw her go over my head TWICE tho.

I totally understand how that happens!
Some stylists claim they are taking very little off and it's not like you can keep an eye on them when they are trimming the back which is where length is most obvious anyway.

I haven't had that problem in a while because the last 2 times, I got a trim from my sister's stylist, I was very clear about how much I wanted off... I told her during the course of my appointment and by the time she was ready to trim, she knew I'd throw a fit if she did otherwise and I kept an eye on what I could see and had my sister look at the back... sometimes you have to be that thorough.

Most of the time, one is facing away from the mirror. The client thinks the stylist is styling, when she is actually cutting OR the client has authorized a trim, and instead ends up with a cut.

It's really very simple.

Oh yes thats another thing, a stylist could NEVER be able to turn me away from the mirror while they're trimming me.......NE-VER. I watch them like a hawk during the trim and they even hand me the trimmed ends as evidence they're following my demands. I dont play that

Wow, I think I'm starting to understand why so many ladies have trimming mishaps now. I understand some ladies avoid conflict but ask yourself this before you go into the salon, whats more important to you, 1) the stylists feelings or 2) keeping the hair you worked so hard to grow and care for??

I've never had that happen to me. I'm always aware when my stylist is trimming / cutting my hair because she only does so when I ask her.

I never had an unwanted trim since I been on LHCF, sometimes when they ask me at the salon I say no with a firm tone that it might come off as an attitude to them, but I don't care because it's my hair and my money.

Most people are afraid to speak up. Myself included the last time I got a domincan blowout was the first time I asserted myself to say when she was applying too much heat. Normally I just take it. OT Blackm your hair is amazing. I don't know how you do those styles but they all look great.

My friend said her stylist was sneaky and use to hide the cut hair in her hand so she would not see the amount being cut fall to the floor.
I only had that happen when i wore a short tapered cut, sometimes I did not want it too short so I could curl it but then my stylist would cut instead of trim. I did not mind only because I was not trying to grow my hair out then.

My current stylist never cuts more than I tell her, infact she cuts less. She never really tells me I need trims so I think I only gotten about 2 in the last year.

this has happened to me twice. if i dont mention a trim and neither do you, im not expecting scissors. i've been trimmed twice without being asked about or mentioning it. scissors were just taken out and cutting commenced without my knowledge. for something as simple as a rollerset, im not watching a stylist i've been to more than once like a hawk. and unless you are positioned sideways, you can't see what she's doing. i dont know anything is going down until i either see hair on the floor or hear snips, which you may not hear if you are in a typical black salon because between the talking, dryers, tv, soliciters, it can be pretty darn loud.

I understand how this happens, as some stylists can be rather sly and some consumers are passive about their expenditures. These salon disasters can easily be prevented if people would get familiar and comfortable with the stylists' agenda and being assertive about their goals. Although I know the experience of some has been that no matter how bold and insistent they are about what they expect, their stylists do whatever they want, and that is not right. But most of the time I believe it's preventable, just by doing simple things like getting to know the stylist before even letting her/him perform a service. But I am a DIYer, so I can't recall any trimming mishaps, even when I was going to a stylist years and years ago.

I know in the past for me the stylist will show how much they are going to cut. Then they turn you around (your facing the mirror) they are in the back snippin' away and you are thinking its the agreed amount. But then when you are done and they hand you the mirror to look its already too short...

But again that goes back to being non confrontational, not asking for a mirror to watch as she is cutting :/

Ok I was going to start a similar thread today. Why did I go from BSL to barely APL when I only wanted a trim???? I sat in the chair and asked for a trim...she shows me a solid 3 inches of hair she wants to cut and after giving her my "are you crazy" look I show her 1 inch. So thats what she cut off...1 inch...the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time she went around my head. By the time she was done she cut off the 3 inches she wanted to cut in the first place. I WAS HOT!!!! I thought maybe I was exaggerating and she didnt cut as much as I thought but after looking at pics of what my hair USED to look like I see it. IM SO MAD!!!!!

I think some trust the stylist. The stylist says you need a trim, you say ok. In my mind (when I was younger & trusted hairstylists) I thought she would know better then I would what my hair needed. She/he is licensed-I'm not. Now I know a trim is a 1/8-1/4 but in some stylist they see cut 1-3 inches. Usually people are distracted by reading a mag, or looking at the stylist books not paying attention to what is going on. Now I know don't take my eyes off while doing anything to my hair and show me what to cut. But years ago, I trusted the stylist.

I had a stylist sit me in the chair and brush all of my hair behind me. Then she proceeded to comb snip, comb, snip, comb snip. While I am looking in the mirror right at her. I never saw the scissors and I honestly could not tell she was "trimming my split and dry ends" until she turned the chair to the side to make sure it was even. Aaaarrrggghhh! There is no "tension" when someone is cutting your hair unless they are pulling it you can't feel it. So trust me it is possible.

The last time I got an unwanted cut was 3 weeks AFTER she's already cut my hair after a virgin relaxer. A trim wasn't asked for OR discussed I felt her going across my back and asked what she was doing. By then she was halfway done I was turned away from the mirror, and she must have had the scissors in her smock.

The next stylist was told at the time of the appointment and 5 times before hse touched my hair "no cutting at all"!!!!

too funny because my daughter said my stylist was jealous of me when we left. LOL There may be some truth to it but I tried to down play it for my daughter's sake. She will tell me how healthy, stong, and fast my hair is growing and then cut my hair....when she's only supposed to be dusting my ends. She don't play that with my mom tho....my mom will get her told...

One of three stylists I trust with my hair once told me to NEVER allow a stylist to turn me away from the mirror. He said if they can't take me watching what they are doing, they don't need to touch my hair! I only left him because I moved to another state.

This is the TRUTH! Because of this, I now state - upfront when I make the appointment and again before the stylist begins - No Trim!

You don't have to be passive to have a stylist grab some scissors and start cutting without your permission. Now if you sit there silently and continue to let them do it, then that's an even bigger problem.
