no matter what I do, this crap continues to break off!!! I swear this is insane!!! I wish I could just shave my head bald. Why won't the breakage stop!!!!!!!!

protein treatments don't work! moisture doesn't work! so what now! I HATE MY HAIR. I feel so ugly!!! what's wrong with my hair!!!!!

what's your regimen, have you ever had problems with your relaxer before, are you stressed out?

well, I decided I would stretch for about 4 months! Bad idea. I've always had breakage issues but this made it worse. I thought I'd give myself a chemical break...but I decided I better touch-up and stop the madness. Well the madness got worse! My hair is just not the same. It doesn't feel the same, move the same, or even have the luster it once had after I touched up.

My regimine is simple...I use SE lye relaxer (now about every 8-10 weeks). I wash weekly w/ Aveda damage remedy (which I used in the past w/ excellent results but now I dont' know). I roller set with lacio lacio. about every 3 to 4 days I apply Mizani night H20 cream and most days I'll just apply a little jojoba oil. I wrap my hair most nights or pin curl and tie down w/ a satin scarf. My hair has never been this awful before. I'm embarassed to look at myself......seriously, I just feel so ugly. All I see is broken pieces all over my head.

Maybe you need to clarify.

Your hair sounds like mine a couple of weeks ago. My hair was hard (like a @%$ helmet). That is until I clarified and DC'd. My hair feels much better.

Have you been consistent with protective styling and reduced manipulation and combing? My relaxed days were almost break free after I started to comb very infrequently, nightly baggies, wear my hair in a bun or french roll daily. I also made sure to deep condition every week, used Nexxus leave-in daily and always oil sealed. The most breakage I had was on the once a month combing which rarely involved bulb hairs.

Well, I not sure what's going on, but stress might be a factor and you are stressing yourself out now, clam down, and you are not ugly, have you tried doing a tea rinse or using ayurveda powder? Have you considered going natural and seeing if that could work for you? What kind of proteins have you used? And what kind of moisturizer do you use? I'm not sure what to tell u, but if you are stressed out, that could be a reason for your hair to fall out.....depending on what kind of proteins you use, you be could using too much proteins......Have you tried Roux Porosity Control Conditioner? Do you deep condition?

Maybe you can try changing your perm. Sometimes our hair gets tired of the same old product. When I was relaxed and used Pantene I loved it then one day it just stopped working. I'm thinking my hair was just tired of Pantene and that was correct. I switched to something Garnier and my hair LOVED IT!

You really sound like me a month ago. It's so horrible when your hair is acting crazy. Just don't let it intimidate you and take control of your hair.

my hair is really short now and my edges are paper thin so wearing a bun or french roll is not an option. I could wig it but I don't even want to tell the stress I have over that. I do deep condition every week and switch between Aveda DR Intenive repair and the regular Aveda DR conditioner but I do deep condition weekly.

Sounds like you're not moisturizing enough. Try using a water/oil combination moisturizer like ORS Olive Oil lotion 2-3 times daily, concentrating on your ends. I do this daily, and over 6 months I have halted 99% of the breakage I was suffering. My favorite for this is Cathy Howse's Ultra Black Hair Moisture Lotion, but she's currently having lab problems and her orders for this are WAY backed up. The ORS is a fair alternative. As I'm sure you know, alternating between protein and moisture based deep conditioners is essential for halting breakage. Try switching up on your DC's. Mizani MoistureFuse is a good light protein deep conditioner if you want to stick to that line of products. Keracare and Elasta QP make very good moisture based deep conditioners. DC your hair EVERY time you wash it. Keeping the hair tangle free also helps. After moisturizing at night, tuck your ends under before wrapping. Instead of tying your hair down tightly, try using a looser cap with a band (no elastic)--it can aggravate breakage.) The cap will hold your ends in place and they'll be soft and hydrated in the AM.

You CAN stop breakage. You just need to add a few products to your regimen to soften and hydrate your hair.Do a search on Sistaslick. She's written some brilliant pieces here and on other websites about this.

Good luck!

I had some breakage issues. I got a nice two inch trim and went to Aphogee, for my exclusive line. It was helped my hair is not angry at me.

=D

I use Mizani nightly H20 as my moisturizer. I have tried Roux porosity control conditioner but will give it a try. And I deep condition weekly

You might try clarifying and deep conditioning with moisturizing conditioner (like Mixed Chicks deep conditioner or L'Oreals Mega Moisture conditioner - something with no protein in it).

Also, the Lacio Lacio may not be helping. I know I can't use it because I think it has Lanolin in it. Maybe try setting with Chi Silk Infusion or Moroccan Oil.

Too much protein can make your hair hard and brittle.

HTH

thank you for this info. Hmm I'll look into the ORS line

I'm 5 months post-relaxer and realized that after I clarified, then did an Aphogee protein treatment, the breakage stopped! I will stop. Clarify first. Protein. Deep condition overnight if you can. Low manipulation. Try not to comb too often. I like Mizani H20 Nightime Treatment, but I also love Jane Carter Moisturizer (in the tub). FANTASTIC!!!

Nycha, I've worn wigs for 5 days a week, once in a while even on weekends for the past year+; wigs worn which look good on you {there are hundreds of styles to choose from} can give your hair a serious rest. I've never had a wig fall off, blow off or do damge to my edges. I do daily moisturizing and oil sealing, shampoo or conditioner poo every 4 days or so. Give it a try then see if you like it..I love having my wigs handy.

thank u all for your encouraging words. I will try something on Thursday and hope for the best. I feel like giving up cause the daily little hairs covering the sink just make me angry. I'm going to clairify and do a protein treatment and see what happens. As for the wigs, I'll take a serious look into trying something cause this mess must stop before I break out the clippers and go postal on my scalp.

i'm sorry to hear you are having a bad hair moment. it is just a phase and you will grow healthier hair that you'll be happy with!

i think all of the ladies gave you great sugestions. i have never used lacio lacio but i have used setting lotion before and wound up having breakage because it made my hair feel hard. therefore, when i combed out the curls(just fingers) i would have breakage! i've heard great things about lacio lacio but i would make sure that you aren't using too much. that probably goes for any product you put on your hair.

also, do you take any vitamins? like maybe a multi vitamin? we can be good to our hair from the outside but also have benefits from what we put inside our bodies. eating a balanced diet, drinking lots of water, getting some cardio in there.... all good for the body, including hair.

good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

How's your diet? If you're not getting the right amount of nutrients or deficient in some, it leads to bad bad breakage.

It's annoying, but perhaps you should try switching your shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes these products lose effectiveness as your hair gets used to it, so even if you switch to another line in the Aveda range or a different line altogether, this may help.
