I Want To Start Protective Styling More But...

It seems like people only do twists. I'm a 4b natural. They make my hair get tangles and ssk's so bad. Is there anything else I can do? My hair is about SL stretched. I can't really do a bun without it being super tight. Any suggestions?

I feel you pookaloo83. I've gone back and forth with two strand twists because I've seen so many women grow out their hair successfully with them. But for me, the longer I wear them for any given time, the ends of my twists and strands get all tangled and form single strand knots. I also hate how the ends of my twists unravel no matter what I do. I also do not like how frizzy they start to look. I've embraced it before but it does get annoying, especially with shrinkage.

I also have gone back and forth with wearing a bun in different spots on my head, but I think they are not that good for my hair because of the tension the ponytail holder causes on my fine hair strands. I think the ponytail holder causes unseen breakage. I don't like loose buns either. They cause that bulge on the top of my head or back of my head which will make my bun look smaller... which I do not like.

So then I would go back and forth with flat ironing and twistouts. With flat ironing, I think it caused splits, and I would get bored with the straight hair after the curls fell. Then with twistouts, I got tired of having to retwists most nights. Plus, my twistouts were always above my shoulders. I want to be able to wear a twistout that hangs pass my shoulders one day.

So now, I'm considering updo's and pin-up styles in order to leave my hair alone and retain more length...less stress on my hair.
