....why do you still need to moisturize every day? Are you really "sealing" in moisture, or just layering product on top of product?

I don't seal, but I tried it for a while. The only difference I saw in my hair was that if felt more weighed down & icky/ oily by the time wash day rolled around.

I don't use product everyday. Sometimes it is every 3 days. Even then I don't have to put on product for moisture, it is more to stretch my hair out.

No one said that it's supposed to make an everlasting seal, lol. It just helps keep the moisture content up. Oils also condition, lubricate and give shine to the hair.

We produce sebum naturally, so I don't think there is anything too wrong with the logic aspect of it.

Some people's hair doesn't like oils... maybe you are one of those people.

However, (unless you are going for greasy) your hair should not be oily after using oil. I oil my hair daily, sometimes twice daily and it isn't oily at all. Maybe you were using too much or a oil too heavy for your hair.

I honestly think it depends on what you're moisturizing and sealing with.

Whenever I seal, I use Hot Six oil. That seems to be the only thing that holds onto any moisture I put on my hair. When I use Hot Six, I don't moisturize twice a day because my hair will start to feel weighed down.

I have to use a creamy moisturizer. I can't do a wet moisturizer and then seal. My hair will break off.

thanks for responding - I was wondering how many people here use product every day and whether some people only moisturize or add product periodically!

I totally get what you're saying except for the part about hair not being "oily" after using oil. That seems like an oxymoron.

I think my fav oil so far has been coconut oil, but I have tried a variety since joining LHCF & long before. I don't dislike oils, I just don't see the direct benefit when it comes to retention. But like you said, some people's hair responds differently.

I noticed that SunShyne uses hot six oil. When I get low on oils, I may try that, too. Twice a day and doesn't weigh your hair down? That sound pretty good.

Yeah, I noticed that I don't do well with wet moisturizers, either. I prefer creamy ones, but it's hard to find light creamy ones.

i don't know if it seals, but i like the way it makes my hair feel. it makes it feel softer after the moisturizer and makes my hair slippy so its easier to comb through. i also like the way it makes my hair look.

Good question. I am trying this moisturizing/sealing, and my hair is an oily mess and I ruined my new pillowcase even though I was wearing a scarf to bed. :nono: The oil just sits on top of the moisturizer. :-( Maybe my hair doesn't like oil or maybe I am using too much, but I read some people say use a dime-size amount. But how do you apply a dime sized amount to all of your hair (or even just to all of your ends) if you are natural??? :ohwell:

eta: i don't always use oil though. most times i'm lazy so i just moisturize or sometimes i'll just add oil for shine and 'combability'

I don't do that moisturize and seal daily thing anyway. :look:

I DC, apply leave-in/moisturizer, and seal and, days later, if my hair starts feeling dry, then I wash and DC again. :look:

Nah, your hair has oil in it whether or not you put it in there. All of your skin produces oil, but that doesn't mean you are oily to the touch (hope not! lol) Your hair only feels oily when there is too much oil in it. I go for a very light coating only. I'm talking dime and nickel sized amounts.

Well, water gets used. It doesn't just sit in our hair. It's like when you drink water. The water is then used to help support processes within our body. Same think happens in your hair. That's why hair that is not properly moisturized on a consistent basis can get damaged. Your hair simply doesn't have enough water to carry on what ever processes occur in your hair, so your hair can't function normally. Once the moisture in your hair is used up, it need to be replenished.

Yeah, waaaaaay too much if it's soaking through your scarf. :perplexed

I section my hair into 4 sections, put a little oil in my palms and rub my palms together and just work it in. Just like you would do with moisturizer or anything else.

Just to add what she's saying: For those of you whose hair doesn't seem to like oils, it may be that your hair shaft is getting the adequate amount of oil it needs naturally or it may not like any oil other than natural sebum. In other words, if your hair doesn't like it, you probably don't need it. So, skip sealing and let your hair do its thing.

Yeah, I agree. If I naturally produced enough sebum, I wouldn't use any extra oil. Maybe literally a drop or two like some women at longhaircommunity. Some people just don't need it :yep:

I use oil almost daily. I only use water as my moisturizer so I use the oil to keep the water from evaporating so quickly. I use a lot on wash day and then a lighter coating in between.

When I used to use a moisturizer I had the same problem, the oil would just sit on top. Now that I've been using only water, the oil gets absorbed. And I use wayyyy more than a dime sized amount. That would only be enough for one medium-large sized twist :lachen:. I like to make sure my hair is coated, especially my ends. It's an extra layer of protection for me, I can't skimp on it.

Yuppers that why i don't seal per se...when it feel a little on the dry side a dab of biosilk goes a long way....and i mean a dab like microscopic

Sealing with oil doesn't work for me. I've tried a bunch of different oils and grease. I "seal" with my creamy moisturizer. I spray my hair with a rosewater mixture then apply a dime size of NTM Silk Touch.

I only use once a day and only IF my hair feels under moisturized.

I use a moisturizer by Silk Essentials, but it's not from their regular line. They sell it at Sally's, but it's always on sale. I don't know if they're discontinuing it or not. Let me see if I can find a pic or a link to it.

I can't do twice a day. I moisturize about once a day and/or only when my hair feels dry. I use a moisturizer by Silk Essentials (from their Restore and Revive line). Here's a pic.

I get it from Sally's. It's always on sale, and I'm not sure why. I always buy two. It's really good and you only need a drop of the Hot Six oil if you use it.

I think we may be in the same hair family! I'm not having pillow problems, but sometimes I think I go a little overboard with the product thinking I have to slather it on to get the effects. Like if I don't use tons my hair will jsut be dry. I've been looking at a lot of these youtube videos and such, and girls with hair 3 times my length are using less products than me!:drunk: Realized then I was probably oversaturating my hair. It's a hard habit to kick, but I'm finally easing back on the amount I use and seeing better results.

Sealing with oil doesn't work for me. I've tried a bunch of different oils and grease. I "seal" with my creamy moisturizer. I spray my hair with a rosewater mixture then apply a dime size of NTM Silk Touch.

Hmmmm....this sounds interesting. I have both. May give it a try.

Yep. Oil can definitely give that silky/ soft feeling & make the hair easier to comb through.

That's how I feel sometimes.

I don't get the dime-sized amount thing either. I remember Macherie says to use a dime-sized amount for the saran wrap method, but my hair is way shorter than hers and I have to use more.

Interesting!

Yeah, it seems like when I use the right products on wash day, my hair stays really soft and moisturized.

Okay, now I understand what you're saying. The right amount of oil helps with the condition of your hair, but too much oil will lead to that greasy/ oily feeling. Thanks!

I know that the body produces oil on it's own, but I wonder why you can't really see/ feel it, or at least I can't. Maybe I should pay more attention!

Ha-ha. Thanks for sharing your method!

I love serums, they seem so much lighter than oil, but I don't know if they are as "good for the hair" as something natural, like natural oils. I love some Chi Silk Infusion & Biosilk is great, too.

IMO you don't. :look:
And if you do, there's something amiss in your deep conditioning regimen.

That's what I've been thinking. I find that when I take the time to pre-poo & deep condition properly, my hair stays moisturized/ soft much longer.

I know everyone is different, but I'm going to really work on stepping up my DC and see if that allows me to cut down on my daily moisturizing - I will still moisturize my ends, but not really all of my hair each day.

You know, I have seen some really greasy hair in my lifetime...

Oh, let me tell you. One day, a girl I knew from a writing class saw me after a concert and gave me a hug. Well, hair rubbed against the side of my face. It felt like a pizza hugged me. It wasn't the feeling of sweat. Sweat, I could have dealt with. It was really greasy feeling. I wanted to cry.

But to answer your question, I'm guessing our bodies secrete it slowly, so it's in amounts we can't see. And you do encounter it in other ways. Acne? Some of what causes acne is too much sebum production (there's also dead skin in germs in there too). That's why some acne feels so greasy.

ewwww, I'm wincing for you :nono::perplexed

Moisturizer rubs off, that's why it needs to be replaced. Wear a hat? It rubs off. Lean your head back on the car headrest? It rubs off. Lay back on the couch, touch your hair while styling, put a scarf on at night....get the picture? For someone like me with dry hair who does the above things I benefit from sealing 2ce a day. If your hair never comes into contact with other surfaces then you won't see the need for it.

I don't seal, but I tried it for a while. The only difference I saw in my hair was that if felt more weighed down & icky/ oily by the time wash day rolled around.

Then you are most certainly using the wrong products. I seal with a creamy butter (Elasta QP mango butter) on my ends and edges followed by almond oil. Almond oil is super light and absorbs quickly. No greasy feel. I also use it on my skin.

But in the end you must do whats right for your head. If your hair is not dry and you don't have split ends then maybe you just don't need to seal.
