Is Anyone's Hair Prospering Despite Split End?

I'd like to know because I need some encouragement. I just got got a trim on Tuesday and I'm still seeing splits. Some even go up the shaft about 3 inches in some spots(the weird ones that look like a tree branch). I may just have to bite the bullet and get 3 inches or more trimmed off.

I don't use a curling iron or flatiron. When I don't have braids in my hair, I sit under a hooded dryer maybe 4 times a month or less.

This is getting to be very frustrating. I wish I knew the exact cause.

Also if you've had this problem, how did you solve it? Thanks

I have those same splits, I couldn't notice it while my hair was auburn/brown (African Pride Color) but as soon as I dyed it black (Bigen), ! It kinda gave me the creeps, there are a lot of them. Mine has come from the double processing with the relaxer and permanent APC hair color. I won't use that color anymore. :nono:

My plan is just to continue to do my protein treatments once or twice a month, maintain a high moisture level in my hair and trim about as much new growth as I get per month for probably the next 6 months. I won't gain much length this way but the splits and thinness will go away.

I don't really think there is a way to get around eventually cutting them off. :(

In the meantime, I'm using protective styling (practice for when my hair IS all healthy).

I have the same problem. I'm not sure if that's why my hair tangles so much. My hair has always had a problem w/ tangles especially as it grows longer. I've been doing the same thing for the last 3 months. It seems like I gained a little growth in the back (I a layered haircut that fell a couple inches past my shoulders after a hairdresser chopped off all my lenth when I was at back strap). The shorter hair in the front and top half in the back is basically staying the same because I have to keep cutting off the splits.

For me, Aphogee seems to be the only thing that works. I'm going to start simplifying my regimen like I did in college. I would shampoo, condition, sometimes hot oil, and then apply detangler and then M&T Texturizing Conditioner. I still haven't clipped my ends from my last relaxer...been avoiding it. We're all fighting against split ends.

You are not alone. I have extremely dry hair and have had a split end problem most of my life! Three weeks ago, I chopped off 4 inches of my hair into a neck length bob. Why do I STILL see SPLIT ENDS! It's enough to make me go absolutely mad! The only thing that ever worked for me was TCB Split End Shampoo and Conditioner- never saw one split with this product. Unfortunately, this product was dicontinued some years back and my hair was never the same since! Right now my hair by some miracle is growing. The back is brushing on my shoulders and the the sides are down to the base of my neck. I The only thing that I can do to keep them at bay is to moisturize my ends with Shea butter and clip 1/2 inch of hair every week or 2 weeks after a wash. I'm also going to use Nutregena triple moisture shampoo & conditioner, Lekair's cholesterol (sp?) w/ jojoba oil, aloe and placenta and lubricate my hair every 2 days with Black and Sassy Oil Sheen in a Jar. Hopefully my hair will be back to 15" by spring. It is now between 10- 12 "...

i have the same problem. my hair is going and looks healthy though. i just don't know what to do. just like you, when i get a cut or trim, i still see split ends. i'm not going to cut off all of my hair b/c they will still be there. if i cut my hair down to half and inch, i bet id still see split ends  . i've been doing everything i'm supposed to do to have healthy hair, so i dont know. maybe split-ends are just inevitable for some. btw, those long tree branch looking ones give me the creeps too. yuck!

i think the split ends cause the tangles. i know when i have some tangles, i examine the area and it is usually regular hair tangled with split ends.

I have split ends and I'm not particularly obsessive about getting rid of them. My plan is the dust every 8 weeks and moisturize regularly and use and occasional reconstructor. One tip I'd give is that if you haven't resolved the moisture/dryness issue it makes no sense whatsoever to take off 3 inches. I did that once and seriously, less than one week later I had more splits because my hair was still brittle and dry. Splits are definately a dryness issue- if you were in braids with extensions, your ends probably lacked enough moisture. I'd start conditioner washing 2-3x a week and deep conditioning 1x week avoiding heat and styles requiring manipulation. Once your hair feels soft again I'm then take off a bit.

Have you tried dusting? You can remove the splits without sacraficing length. But most importantly, do you know what's causing the splits?

I wouldn't say I was prospering but my hair is still gaining length and thickness despite my ends. I do continuously dust my ends on a sporadic basis. But I've never don't an aggressive trim.

I was having MAJOR split end issues until I started doing the baggie method. Seems it was a moisture issue for me.

Hang in there! I used to fight a never ending battle with split ends. I mean...it got to the point that I would run and get a pair of shears every time I saw one....which was all of the time...but that got old.

When I became natural...I started wearing protective styles...so I wasn't finding as many. As soon as my hair grew out...I started wearing the puff everyday and the split ends came back with a vengeance! I just recently did a two inch trim because I was seeing way too many of them. Now that I'm back to protective styling this Winter...I'm not seeing that many.

I think like Felicia suggested...split ends are inevitable. I've come to the realization that everyone has a few of them. My hair is healthy...and grows out despite them...but I do find that frequent small trims...protecting my ends and using Jojoba Oil keeps them to a minimum.

yeah, those dang split ends....if there was a way we could just get rid of them forever... lol.... my hair still grows even though i get them very often....

Thanks for posting SherryLove, I was wondering if you encounter them anymore! It's very encouraging.

I went to examine my hair after my initial post, I found a stand, one strand, that I clipped, it's about two inches long and there are 8 DIFFERENT SPLITS in that one section   . I tried to take a picture of it but my camera won't zoom that closely. I WISH I could post it.

Fortunately my hair is cornrowed (only the hairline is out) or I'd have taken the scissors and gone to work. :cry3:

yeah, vixxen, i cannot escape those awful things....but i , like faith, find that i do not get them as much now that i wear protective styles and keep my hair moisturized all of the time....

it's a good thing your hair is in cornrows.....smile.... otherwise, you may have chopped off more hair than you wanted to..... i did that once in the heat of the moment... i was so disgusted with all of my split ends.....lol...

  I did that once before and i ended up having to get several inches cut off to even it up.

Thank you ladies for your responses. You jumpstarted me to adding more moisture in my regimen(more CW like I did when I first joined LHCF).
Your encouragment boosted me up. Thanks again.

well i am noticing a lot of split ends and my hair is VERY dry but i just started moisturizing more frequently. the thing is that i have split ends but my hair seems to split in the middle of strand not just the end. does this happen to anyone else?

yes that happens to me..I get both trees ( ---< ) and weird looking splits further up they look kinda like this: ----o---- ..And I totally agree split ends creep me out! I'm going to try CW in hopes that my breakage and split ends will stop.

Yeah my hair is doing well despite splits.

I had a real hair cut in November because of splits and breakage and now my hair is doing and looking much better. I have noticed some more splits in my hair but no where as bad as they used to be. I just cut back on the flat iron. Roller set more and treat my ends more gently. If you wrap your hair don't use a brush because I think that smoothing the finished wrap with a brush is too much for the ends.

I get those horrible things too! I Just trimmed 3 inches a month ago because they were aggrevating me. I've learned to live with them, I do find that oiling the last three inches of my hair and whenever I deep treat I focus mainly on my ends and not too much on the NG, I've found that this has helped tremendously.
