I'm not sure if I'm the only person that gets this, but when I apply conditioner to my wet hair, or oils to seal damp hair, I get breakage.

I sometimes think, what's the point in applying a dc when I get breakage while I'm applying it:lol:

Does anyone seek out particular ingredients/products so that you can apply products to damp or wet hair without the breakage?

Look for products with collagen or hydrolyzed collagen protein in them. Aphogee two minute reconstructor has this ingredient. Some of the juices have them too but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head.

what conditioners are you using?

Everyones hair does not do well with applying anything on damp hair. I know mine does not like it, I get breakage. I have to wait until my hair is about 50-80% dry.

Myjourney2009, thanks
I posted the conditioners I use in the other thread -what causes waxy hair -but basically, jason sea kelp conditioner, silk element's dc, aubrey organics gpb. I have others I need to use up.

Anywho, I'm talking mostly about the breakage I get when applying conditioner /dc to my wet hair (after shampooing); not so much with leave-ins

bb09 are you handling your hair in a rough manner?
Do you think you have a protein/moisture balance or imbalance?
Are you trying to comb the conditioner through or just breaking from you touching it?

divachyk -I part a section (with fingers), (1)then I put the conditioner on, and pull it through to the ends, (2)then I finger comb that section.
I think I get the breakage when I fingercomb /rake it through, but I do that to get any tangles out.

i stick to dc'ing on dry hair. i don't like dealing with my hair too much when it's wet, plus if it's full of water, how can it absorb conditioner that well? lol, that's somethin i learned here.

Think it's your technique causing the breakage.

-I shampoo in 4 sections/quadrants.
-Apply conditioner to the ends of the 4 quadrants to keep hair from sticking, clumping or getting tangled.
THEN
-Gently separate hair and apply DC to each quadrant.
NO finger combing, regular comb type combing, shower combing, etc. I rub my hands across/over the strand when applying the conditioner but not in/through it.
-Steam and/or sit with conditioning cap on - still no combing
-Rinse - still no combing
-Apply leave ins - still no combing
-Detangle when about 90% dry - now I comb

divachyk, thanks for the steps. I'm going to start doing it like that.
But, if you come across a tangle, do you just leave it? Wouldn't the shower /washing your hair afterwards make any tangle worse? I'm texlaxed btw

@divachyk

This list was perfect. I've been doing this since last year. I never thought to put it in list format. Can I steal this to put in my blog:grin::grin:

Myjourney2009, giryal yea-yah go ahead and place that on your blog. You taught me well so let me thank you! :yep: You gave me the idea to place it on mine too. Good looking out.

bb09, now that I have proper washing technique, I don't suffer with tangles as much. I still have tangles but not matted kinds of tangles where I feel I must detangle then and there when my hair is wet.

My does not do well with wet combing. The only time my hair is combed when wet is 1) at the salon on TU day when they are roller setting; I'm relaxed 2) at home, I will gently comb while wet if and ONLY if I'm pressed for time and need to pull my hair back in a bun and head out to run errands. I prefer not to wet comb but occasionally I do for the reason stated in #2. On TU day, I feel that my hair does fine with wet combing because it's straight and the comb glides right through.

If I should come across a bad tangle, I would apply additional conditioner to the tangle and gently separate it with my fingers only. When applying the DC, I'm truly not checking for tangles. I apply the DC with the relaxer method similar to the method used here except I don't twist my hair up and my hair is separated in 4 quadrants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY-4VYxBh3A

You need to determine if your hair can tolerate wet combing. Not everyone's can. Mine definitely can't.

Myjourney2009, yeah, I thought of u when I read that

One last thing.. How much of your 'ends' do you apply conditioner to? I had maybe 25 hairs of breakage in total, which is a lot less than I was getting before :yep:. I smoothed conditioner over my (two) ponies.. the actual length on my hair (I'm guessing 7-9 inches). I noticed a bit of breakage when I did that. (I didn't do the 4 quadrants, bcos I didn't have my clamps with me).

After applying condish through my hair, it was fine.. It was when it came to me smoothing more conditioner over my hair -as if I was making a ponytail, that I got more breakage. That's when I got the 15-20 extra broken hairs.

Gosh, should I just never smooth my hands over my wet hair -with or without condish? ..Does that count as detangling? Or do you dry the top of my hair b4 applying condish?

divachyk, I need to get into the habit of applying it like that, to already wet hair ^. Thanks so much for the explanation, and link . I don't think my hair can take wet combing either.

divachyk, sorry to pull you back in here lol. Do you mind answering the bolded?

@bb09 - no prob.

I don't measure, just apply. To guestimate, maybe a nickel sized amount on the bottom 3 inches of my hair.

If I'm deep into a stretch, I will apply about a quarter size conditioner from ends to roots. Just a quick rub over the hair. Then apply another nickel sized amount to the ends. This keeps the hair from getting too tangly and sticky.

After doing all 4 quadrants this way, I will then go back and apply conditioner throughout the quadrants with the method I posted a link for.

Are you using a soft touch when applying the conditioner? Are you ripping through your hair or rushing when applying the conditioner? Are you tugging unnecessarily? A simple smoothing of the hair should not generate breakage if you're using a gentle/soft touch. If you're actually pulling at the hair, trying to detangle while applying the conditioner by overly manipulating/smoothing the strands, then breakage might result.

I would not count smoothing as detangling but based on your smoothing technique, it could be too rough of manipulation for your hair.

I step out of the shower, squeeze water out of my hair (hair is still damp but not sopping wet), then apply the conditioner to the ends and/or small amount to the entire quadrant if deep into a stretch - reference above. Do all quadrants. Then apply the conditioner via relaxer method.
