L-cysteine: has any one tried it????

Ok Ladies,

I tried to do some research on this and this is what I found at:

http://www.anyvitamins.com/cystine-info.htm

This will page will also direct you to the Cysteine page.

This paragraph was interesting on the L-cysteine page:

Cysteine is a sulfur containing non-essential amino acid and is closely related to cystine, as cystine consists of two cysteine molecules joined together. It is an unstable nutrient and easily converts to cystine, but this does not cause a problem, since both can convert into the other – as required by the body.

Now it mentions only on the Cysteine page that this animo acid is good for hair. I started taking L-Cysteine myself last month. HTH.

Hi, ladies,

After checking out parts of this thread, I was at The Vitamin Shoppe today (I think I am becoming a VJ - Vits Junkie!) :lachen: , and was reading up on cysteine and cystine; it was saying that the best way to supplement cysteine is to take NAC, which stands for N-Acetyl-Cysteine (Free Form Amino Acid) and the bottle I got (by TwinLab) says the following:

N-Acetyl-Cysteine is a precursor of glutathione in the body and a protect sulfur-containing amino acid. It is more stable than the sulfur- containing amino acid cysteine.

I have taken one today so far (each capsule is 600mg, and the recommended dose is one); I was also reading that cysteine works best with Vitamin C, so I have upped my vitamin C to 1,000 mg (2 tablets) a day.

Forgive me if this info was posted before; just wanted to inform! :)

I just wanted to add that the NAC can also be taken without breaks. Other amino acids work better if you take them for 2-3 months straight and then take a amino acid complex for 2-3 months and then go back to the singles. Always take 2-3x the vitamin c of your aminos to prevent oxidation.

I will, gymfreak; I guess we now have a "NAC supplement results" challenge, of sorts! :)

I know right. I am going to take some pics before I start taking it and then compare it to my next relaxer pics, sometime in may.

I hear ya; I have in cornrows now (in an attempt to make it 8 weeks or more post relaxer; today is beginning of week 6), and I will try to take pics after the relaxer since the NAC probably won't have kicked in.

I added NAC at the beginning of this month, and I haven't had any breakouts at all; I use biotin and MSM, too.

Hair IS the waste that comes from protein.

Protein is first absorbed by your muscles. Whatever is left of the protein that the muscles don't absorb goes to the hair. That's a large part of how hair is created, that's why it's mostly protein.

Thanks for this info!
