What’s everyone’s thoughts on split end serums?

I got one from Moroccanoil I haven’t used yet and I’ve tried the Kenra one as well (it’s too wet and makes my hair curl up, smell isn’t my favorite thing either but it’s ok).
I’m thinking that if you constantly use a split end serum after a fresh cut then you won’t get split ends. I’m not sure where it goes in my moisture routine either. Just trying to avoid another big cut and retain every inch.
I personally focus on using protein after every blow dry to protect and fortify my ends. Specifically, I use Aphogee 2 Step after a heat style. My heated styles or blowouts were done every 3 months. Now, I’m moving to blowouts and trims every 4 months. Either way, the 3 and 4 month frequency work with the Aphogee 2 Step which should be used every 6 to 8 weeks. I use Aphogee 2 Step once every 12 to 16 weeks. I use lighter protein weekly.

Is the split end serum a repair product or a split end preventative product?

Even though my brain knows that my blowout this weekend will be a huge and fluffy, my heart is hoping that I can somehow achieve a more sleek result.

I’m planning to stop by Ulta on my way home to get a blowout cream. I’m thinking of either the Briogeo Farewell Frizz cream or the Redken Frizz Dismiss. My stylist doesn’t use a blowout cream so I have a tiny hope that my result will be more sleek than hers.
Congratulations on making the move to doing your own blow out and trim!

Now, I am going to give two (2) cautions.

First and foremost the trimming part. Trim only a little at a time. IF, after you blow-dry and find that you are tired, please STOP. Get some rest and consider trimming the next day. When we are tired we can make mistakes. So, save your trimming for the next day when you are fresh and clear. A poor trim can take months if not years to repair. Stopping to rest to get in your best position to be successful takes only 24 hours.

Secondly, choosing a blow-dry cream may seem mundane. More than likely, it is. Worst case scenario, a seemingly harmless, innocuous cream could damage the hair. You are blow-drying, trimming and seeking out a new product to use on your hair. Those are three (3) very new and added processes that you are implementing all at once. The 'newly escaped me' from my 12 Year Break Cycle would caution you and say, "Do the blow out and trim only. See how those two new processes come out for you. If things are good, then the next time consider adding the blow out cream. One thing at a time, implemented slowly over time, can allow for more observation and can better ensure you can clearly see what these new processes are doing to your hair," that's what I would say.

I love that too. Its fifty thousand new posts and they are all by Chicoro. I'm like, What the what? But that is why your thread stays poppin and full of people. Never a dull moment.

I do wonder, like how in the world does she find the time and energy to write such detail posts and add pictures? :nono:

I do 1 post with 4 sentences in each of the threads and I think I've done something. Just going to stay in my lane over here.
Funny you should ask....

I found this site when I was in a horrible job, I was often incapacitated from vicious fibroid tumor pain, and what was more impactful, my father was dying of cancer. This site became a welcoming, respite for me, a place of solace and joy and laughter. I couldn't control the other stuff, but I could control when I wanted to enter into this 'happy space'.

I admire beauty. For me, black women and gorgeous afro-textured hair represent two aspects of beauty for me. The more I live away from the United States, the more admiration and love I have for black women. Black women are physically, gorgeous even though the world may say we are too fat, too dark, our hair is too nappy, and our features are too wide. But black women learn to KNOW they are beautiful and the world copies and steals what we have, re-names it and continues to try to denigrate us. But we be knowing....

Black women are firm and say what they have to so. But they do so with love and care. Not only do they try to cultivate that love and care for themselves, they make efforts to want that love and care to develop in others. Black women take time to help others, quietly, consistently, daily and without fanfare or expectations of return. Black women excel, because they relish in doing well and they know they have to do well because if not, they will get nothing. We can't afford to be mediocre, neither figuratively nor literally. And we are rarely mediocre in our chosen fields.

Black women saved me. Black women encourage me and lift me up. Black women helped me to move to France by buying my hair book I wrote. Black women enabled me to live for five years in France, without having to work. Black women helped me to deepen and broaden and widen my knowledge with what is my passion, afro-textured hair.

When I travel all over this world, often times I can spot a Black American woman from a mile away. The way she moves through the world is unique. There is a quiet confidence. There is a wisdom, a sagesse that you have that permeates your very being and emanates from your Soul, seemingly brought forth by your mere breath, by the subtlest movement that you make with your feet, with your body. The only fatal mistake that black women make, as a group, is that they do not believe or realize that the world sees all this, too, and covets it. Know thyself, black woman.

So, I make time to make these posts because I get tremendous value out of it, too. It allows me to provide fortification and nourishment to black women. Because when I fortify and feed black women, I fortify and feed my own self and soul. Because you see, I too am a black woman with afro-textured hair. The two things of which I love and am very passionate about it. Hence, all my posts I do in response to others, I do for me. It's a win win and I am all about winning.

Lastly, this video below epitomizes all that I said in the aforementioned text, about black women. This lady is lovely to look at. She is great at what she does. She wants that love and greatness for others. She is firm and direct and she lovingly and painstakingly works with this woman's matted hair to help her feel good about herself. How could I NOT want to give to and support such fabulous creatures as her, as you, as black women, or myself?

It’s a preventative product/ split end sealer. I figure- apply a split end sealer before splits happen for preventative measures.

I haven’t used the 2 step in a literal decade so the thought of it makes me nervous. I had positive experiences minus the mess/ smell but I remembered so many people on this board had issues with breakage after using it and that scared me away from it. I’m open to trying it again now that I’m relaxed again.

Thanks for clarifying what the product is.

And, Oh no!

Please don't use something that makes you uncomfortable. I mentioned Achogee 2 Step because I wanted to provide a tangible and specific example of what I do after using heat, to mitigate split end and breakage development.

So please stick to what works for you and what works safely for you.

AHA:

Undid my braid at top right. Got a whole bunch of 'shed hair'. Got barely any shed hair from the opposite braid. I realized that I use bobby pins on the right side to pull back my front braid on the right and to anchor it into the right braid. No more. The bobby pins are breaking my hair on that side. I hadn't noticed this before. Another 'small shift' as I go along my new hair journey. Small shifts can make huge differences in hair health, in the long run.

I love me some bobby pins, too. I am going to have to think about this one. As in whether or not I'm going to stop pinning my hair back. The breakage was significant enough for me to notice, though. I lost one or two strands on the left side, but a mini ball of hair was lost on the right side due to the [alleged - as in I am not totally sure this is the reason] bobby pin breakage.

How are you progressing?
i feel alot better as opposed to a few months ago. Workdays are killer for me but I enjoy taking care of my hair on the weekends.

What are those ends looking like?
Still pretty even overall since the cut, but trying to not let them dry out at all to prevent splitting. I did see some micro/ beginning of splits at the front and enough hair probably wasn’t cut off. I’ve been s&d when I’m idle. I can’t see the back of my hair ends but haven’t noticed anything yet. I have moisture/ oil products in every bathroom of the house now :look:

Have you had any epiphanies?
I wondered why I was so into hair smell this go around my hair journey. For my first hair journey (10+ years ago) my family would make fun of me cause I stunk up the house. They complained about their nose suffering due to my hair treatments (virgin sulfur hair grease, garlic treatments, henna, you name it) -> I did get to Mbl so something was working. Funny now but I was quite hurt by that subconsciously. I live with my hubby and dogs now and I don’t want them to experience that. My dogs nose is so sensitive too so when I smell nice, they are both all over me and it makes me feel better. If my boy dog doesn’t like a smell, he does the absolute most, sneezing, paw over his nose and walking away (husky). Girl dog and hubby are nicer about it but he is also honest. Him hating the smell of weave prompted me in journey #2 since my real hair wasn’t in great condition and the middle dent in my scalp was becoming more irritating. I regularly washed it in my weave so I had some length, it was just super fine and thin. I can’t change fine but I can pick up a little more density without weave weighing down my hair follicles.
I like having a hair journey where I still smell nice. Hair isn’t generally perfectly styled ( it always was in my waist length weave) as I’m still working on a good Rollerset routine but it looks fine. By the time I’m waist length, I’ll have Rollersets down and look fabulous all the time again.

Have you set bolder goals?
I have- I want my length back that I cut. Hair feels way shorter especially when not flat ironed (which isn’t often). Hair is still pretty textured even though I have a relaxer so hair shrinks 5-6” if I don’t blow dry at least.
My hair lays better with the cut and I do sometimes wish I’d done so last year but I was just getting back into things and wanted to solidify a routine first.

Have you pulled back on some goals?

Quite the opposite- I’ll deal with post partum hair once that comes but those 3+ inches cut hurt lol. a once in 18 months professional trim is what I’m thinking for now.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?
Nothing new- just feel like I’m watching a pot boil.

How is your consistency?
Much better- I’m working on my hair grooming in the morning because I sort of randomly fall asleep at night.
Also been keeping up with my hair washes/ deep conditioning so far. The thought of another big cut is scaring me into consistency lol

Are you extending grace to you?
I’m impatient but yes

I have to look into it more. I loved the aphogee two minute reconstuctor but all the Sally’s in my neighborhood went out of business and I stopped using it a few years ago. I’m always iffy on Amazon hair products and hate supporting them but so much is only available there these days.
I do think alot of the breakage was due to people trying to comb that sticky mess in the hair and you aren’t supposed to do that.

I made this video about 7 years ago. Here's how I use Apogee 2 Step: No Dripping, No corrosive eye burning, no smell!

Is what your Husky looks like and does when you've got an 'exotic' smelling concoction in or on your head? :giggle:

Here's another method you can add to your toolbox Ms Love. I add the 2-step to a conditioner (specifically Silicon Mix) and I sit under the dryer for either 15-30 minutes. Depends on how tired I am lol

Do you have any muscle tension on the right side? Is it possible that the bobby pins caused some tension in the area it was pinned.

What is the strategy behind this process, please? Did it soften the impact of the 2 Step? Have you used it full strength and in your mix and compared the two results. This technique sounds very interesting.

I actually do this with the Moremo Water Tx or L'oreal Elvive 8 Wonder Water Tx. Whenever I use it, it feels like that portion of my hair is smoother and my ends feel sealed. So after I trim, I do some sort of Ayurvedic tx to impart nutrients and then I'll use the water tx to seal my ends and seal in those nutrients. At least that's what it feels like I'm doing. lol

It could be psychological bc I don't trim often enough to say how effective it is. But I, and my hair, are happier when I do it.

What is the strategy behind this process, please?
Laziness lol or trying to make things easier for myself
Did it soften the impact of the 2 Step?
It definitely did. My hair felt stronger, and it rinsed out better.
Have you used it full strength and in your mix and compared the two results.
Yes I have, and yes I have, that's why I stuck with this method. It makes life a little easier for me. Lol.
This technique sounds very interesting.
Thanks, to be honest I don't remember how I started it, it was a gift from God lol.

Thank you for pointing out the potential pitfalls I greatly appreciate it and you.

The blow dry cream is pretty much a leave in conditioner with heat protectant. The last time I blowdried by myself- a few year ago- I just used a serum. This time I want to add the cream to see if I can get a bit more weight in my hair. I agree there is a small risk, but since I won’t do this again for another 3-6 months I’m ready to try it now. In general my hair isn’t super sensitive to products, and I’ve liked almost every product I used from Briogeo.

I’ve been reading about blow out technique and one stylist swears by the mason pearson paddle brush. Why is that brush hundreds of dollars?!?!?!

I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to use my comb attachment or if I’m going to try using a brush and the concentrator nozzle. Maybe I’ll do one side one way and the other side the other way. I kind of doubt that I’m coordinated enough for the brush method. But this stylist gets amazing results with that technique(of course she has tons of experience and I have none)

You gotta start somewhere. After today, you will have one experience! Let us know how it turns out, please.

My ends are not luscious or even or full. My goal is to ensure that my hair is not breaking in between blowouts.

@Chicoro Look at you with that beautiful hair and tiny waist! Your pictures appear to show that your hair is in fact gaining in thickness at your new length. Your hair is definitely longer than the 2024 pic, as this is a blowout vs flat iron. Your waist also appears smaller in the updated pic so well done to you all round. I’ve been in your threads but please share your waist whittling methods here. They are working, and working well.

Sis, sis, SIS!!

I'm Amening and Cosigning the other sistas who commented about your hair getting thicker AND longer even though it's only blow dried (vs that light flat iron)!!

That worrying was for NOT-a darn-THING!! That kind of progress in just 4 short months is enough to make anyone a believer. Whatever you're doing DON'T STOP! And, even your autopilot that you do when you feel like you're neglecting your hair is obviously still beneficial to your hair. You will be in "sit down on it" length range in NO TIME!

I'm sooo happy for you!! :hugxplode:

:circle:

Man, DH is about to be so mad at me bc after that AWESOMELY INSPIRATIONAL check in, I'm about to be baggying braids for a little while even though I promised him that he'd see more of my hair now.

What hair? HYH season is being extended, Baby! :look:

Maybe I'll wig it for a while to scratch his itch...

Hey @MzSwift
This is absolutely beautiful. I can see the growth and the retention.

I know you want your ends to be even but what I see is the density of the hair increasing right around waist length, which wasn't their in the previous picture. In the previous picture the depth was more around bsl. So, I would expect with your next check in the density would have moved below waist and hitting on the hip.

To me it looks like things are working out exactly as you planned them. Keep doing what you are doing.

I’m in awe of this woman’s blow dry skills. And she did this entire blowout in less than 20 minutes. And this client has a ton of hair. If my hair were that dense I wouldn’t care if it never got longer than BSL

Yes, it would be great to be able to blow dry it that straight. Wouldn't even consider flat ironing at that point. Then I laughed though that she put it in flat twist at the end.

@GettingKinky is she using the brush you mentioned? Or a different one?

She’s using a different brush. She shares it in her comments. It’s this one. It’s only ~$20 not hundreds of dollars

I think I have Briogeo cream. I liked it with my RevAir.
