Mtg Changed My Hair Type!

I used to have thick, bushy hair. I thought of it as 4ab mix. Now since using mtg, my hair first got a wave pattern. Now, I have curls! erplexed This is something new to me and I am at a loss to how this happened. My hair is now thicker than my childhood and relaxers do not "take" anymore. This is weird and exciting at the same. I think I have 3c/4a hair. My mom told me the curly hair runs in the family. Mixed w/ am. indian and black. I need pics from anyone w/ this hair mix to send pic info if they can. Help me figure this out.

The way your hair comes out of your scalp (meaning how much or how little curl you have) is determined by the shape of your hair follicle. I mean, I love the stuff but, it is just sulfur not some magical DNA transformer. I mean, it kind of sounds like you are saying that it made your hair better by changing your hair type but, nappy is not a horrible condition of the hair. It is a beautiful characteristic of a beautiful people. Improving your hair does not = having a looser texture IMO. I am sure people will be upset that I wrote this but this sounds a bit ridiculous to me.

I hate to stick another pin in the balloon, but I have to agree with everyone else's concensus on this one.........a topical substance, such as MTG, is definitely not going to permanently change the molecular structure or "type" of your hair. It's all in the "gene-beans". Whatever you got at birth is what you're always going to get. The MTG probably made the new growth more soft & managable and may have put some nutrients in your hair that it needed but wasn't previously getting. So, your hair may look and feel much, much different....but if it was 4a/b before the MTG, it's still 4a/b. I think we've all used a product or two (moisture, protein, etc.), that gave our hair a look or feel that we never experienced before, but the true type never changes.

Unless you thought you had 4a/4b but really didn't.....hencing that now you have more newgrowth and the more newgrowth you have makes it better in figuring out your hairtype.

Do 4b's not have a wave pattern? Sorry, I'm a little confused.

I agree about not putting down type 4 hair. Its really not a curse, even though sometimes it feels like it. We just have to learn to make our hair look beautiful, no matter what type it is.

Agreed. No hair type is better than another. All hair types can be pretty .

As for a product that makes hair grow from the scalp a different texture.......I'd be on my way to a doctor cuz that sounds a bit scary .....seriously, like if it went UNDERNEATH the scalp and rearranged the follicular structure, I'd be concerened in a medical kind of way .

Hopefully all the mtg did was soften your new growth....like most greases/products.....even water, but on a temp basis, can do.

Or maybe the hair itself is changing with age. I know that as some people get older, the hair texture will change slightly. That's natural. I've only seen that happen on some elderly people though and it can also be accompanied by the natural thinning process as well.

1. I think that your hair probably was origininally meant to be what it is now. However, if you have relaxed, texturized or put any chemical on your hair that broke down your sulphur bonds, or jacked up your cuticle or otherwise impacted harshly or negatively ( in that it stripped the hair shaft) your hair may have become very porous (thus bushy) or very dry, thus bushy. Maybe you were not a 4ab in the first place.

2. As far as the Indian black mix, I am saddened and feel so bad when people immediately denigrate statements made by members about their mix with Indian ancestry. That is disrespectul to their ancestors.If she had said Nigerian and Ghanian, no one would have questioned or replied in that manner. No one would have asked "what tribe?" And Nigerians and Ghanians and any other African may come from a certain tribe, because Africans are a tribal people made up of many tribes, speaking a vast number of tongues and dialects... so is that saying they are lesser or inferior or have "bad hair" because they come from African heritage? I really never picked up a "good Hair" mentality in the lady's thread. She did say she had curls. What is wrong with having curly hair? I have curly hair. Some ladies have discovered they have waves. What is wrong with having wavy hair, or "mixed hair of any ancestry?"I think that certain products bring out what is already there in the first place.
3. Is there something wrong with being mixed with Indian...? Why is that taken as a negative ? I know what (Indian tribes I am from in my ancestry and where they settled and how they mix came about.) I am curious...what African tribe are the ladies from that were laughing?...what tonques did they speak? What specifically do they know about their specific ancestry? How would you feel if someone laughed and dissed someone who said "I am white mixed with black,...or I am Jamaican and Nigerian....do you understand where I am coming from....please...please do not do this ladies. The truth is...You identify with being black, mainly because of your skin color and hair right..and the Europeans and the government filled in the blanks....so can't every body just accept who they KNOW WHO THEY ARE and accept who others say they are? This really saddens me to see any of our members disrespected this way...and if anyone is mad at me for stating this...I can only say that this has happened over and over and threads have strung out for days and people have been hurt.
4. I do not think that the African part of my heritage makes me inferior to ANYBODY....nor does being mixed with Indian make me superior. We did not create this "racial supremacy..." caste system"...why do we buy into this? why do act as if it is true as soon as someone mentions the term "Indian"? Why do some choose to get defensive about "blackness" as if the term Indian is an insult?

I do not intend to debate this or make any further comment on this thread about this "Indian" subject so now I will be silent.

I Totally Agree with you!! No product permanently change your hairtype other than a relaxer. I've never heard of anything that can alter the shape of hair follicles.

Actually I was thinking something close to this. I figure with the extra undamaged newgrowth you are seeing your true texture. I was excited about my curls too. I remember my hair being somewhat wavy from child hood but the coils were a pleasant suprise.

Just because someone is questioning their hair type or excited about a new nuance they have discovered in their hair doesnt mean they are denying their blackness, ashamed of their naps or are speaking from a form of self hate. Lets be civil and remain on topic please.

I would NEVER deliberately disrespect anyone and I am saddened that my thread struck the wrong cord with others. I was asking if anyone w 3c/4a had pics, because my mom said it ran in the family. I never had the curl pattern I have now, so I wanted to know if a product could affect the way the hair behaves with relaxers or without for that matter. I don't think nappy hair is bad, I was only trying to describe what is going on with MY hair. I didn't mean this post to be a battle royal!

Naturlchallenge, please don't feel dismayed, I apologise for misunderstanding your post, what i have noticed is when i eat healthy or take supplements, my texture becomes more softer and has extra shine, but i haven't noticed a looser curl pattern but i can say i have more definition from using certain products. i have a picture of the back of my hair which i think is 3c. I hope this helps, tell me what you think.

You might have been sulfur deficient...I know I was, my new growth now looks like my natural hair when I was younger BEFORE relaxing. Before using products that contained sulfur, my new growth was very bushy and I could hardly classify it, but since I have been using sulfur products, my newgrowth grows back in curls and coils.


I dont see where all the misconceptions came from. What I read was that she realized that her hair was going through some changes, and that she wanted to determine if she was a 4a/3c or a 4a/4b, and asked if anyone had pictures of these hair types(4a/3c)?

Finally someone who saw what I meant! Thank u! I think that I have a mix w 3c/4a. I think I was sulur deficient then, because now I have curls and coils. Can u give me any idea on the best curl defining products or hair care products to enhance the curls? My right side has more curl becuse my nat. hair is more pronounced. I still have alot of relaxed ends on the left. I'm trying to transition more before I do my final BC.

I did post about bcing and getting curls, but the question I asked had nothing to do with this thread. i was asking others w 3c/4a hair to show me pics, because I am trying to see if I have that hair type. All I want to do is try to find some products to enhance my hair. If I knew it was going to cause all this confusion, I would've kept my mouth shut. No negativity was meant by this thread. I don't understand why people are taking this the wrong way.

I have absolutely no experience with mtg but I think the thing about sulphur changing hair texture is a possibility since many ladies have reported that their texture changed after taking MSM. In fact I asked about it awhile back. No one dismissed the question as if I was crazy for asking it. I know the typing thing tends to strike cords (especially the mixed with indian comment) but the truth is, many of us have experienced texture changes (think about your baby pictures) and it shouldn't be immediately dismissed. As far as the curl comment, I think I made a post once saying that I was exciting that I have curls (among a forest of frizz but I love it!). Now having obsessed over enough posts, I realize that the post was no very natural hair PC and could have easily been taken badly. I was just excited to see my hair and like it- I had been so trained to avoid seeing it unmanipulated. I say this only to suggest that stating that you have curls does not necessarily mean that nappy hair is bad. At least it didn't for me.
Oh btw Natrlchallenge- I think my hair is 3c/4a and I have pictures in my album.

Natrlchallenge, I hope that this thread does not discourage you. I know how it is. After years of doing this and that to your hair and now attempting to erasing all of the myths and bad tips we have gotten about our hair, I have learned a lot about my hair and over the last year it has become much more healtheir and softer. I read something, too, that showed that sulfur does make a difference in the texture of hair, but I bet the condition of your hair is the result of all the healthy things your are doing to it.

I have been using MTG for only 1 week with my 2 week old braids. I have a little over 1/4 of an inch of new growth in some areas and and almost 1/2 in in others. I have been getting my hair braided for YEARS and I am used to the growth pattern my hair has taken. My stands of new growth this time seem unusually thicker and stronger and that excites me.

I am happy that you are making these new dicoveries about your hair. I am too. It is very refreshing and keep up the good work.
