Ladies,

I've been curious about this for a while and since I don't know many Muslim women in real life I figured I'd ask here. (This thread shouldn't be controversial like my last one )

I see that some women cover their hair and others don't. And, of the ones who cover, they do so to varying degrees. For instance, a friend of a friend wears a hat of some sort every day - usually a small beret, where much of her head is still exposed and her hair in a bun. She's wealthy and highly fashionable so her hats, hair, makeup, jewelry, etc are always on point. I used to know another Muslim woman (she's Nation of Islam, if that makes a difference) who only covers occasionally but she never wears her hair out...always plaited.

So, I'd like to know:
- How covered are you?
- How is your hair styled underneath?
- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture?
- How much of the day are you uncovered?
- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us? :look:
- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories?

Sorry for so many questions. I'm just really interested. Please feel free to share beyond the questions asked. Thanks in advance for sharing! :yep:

- How covered are you? I'm completely covered head to toe i also cover my face:blush:
- How is your hair styled underneath? I'm bunning at the moment, but most days i do the southern tease bun or jus wet bun.-
Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture? well i put a silk scarf on before i actually put my hijaab (head covering) on.- How much of the day are you uncovered? when im at home I'm uncovered, when i step outside i cover up
Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us?:lachen: family r allowed female friends are allowed, sorry i will not show u.....u never know who's lurking:yep: -
Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories? no hats loads of scarfs, ez combs and silk accessories....:drunk:

jus read the last bit properly...... no i don't have different scarves for different outfits outside as i wear black alllllllll the time:grin:.......yeah i go hardcore!
but i do have scarves for oufits like when i invite my sistas( sistas in religion) round and i don't feel like doing my hair:lachen: or I'm deep conditioning underneath :lachen:.

I don't mind your questions at all -

- How covered are you?
I wear hijab. I wear scarves that cover my hair, ears and neck. I own dozens of scarves, but they all fulfill the purpose of covering. Some are longer than others.

- How is your hair styled underneath?
It varies. Pin curls, cross wrap, buns, etc.

- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture?
No I wear silk.

- How much of the day are you uncovered?
Every time my foot steps outside of my front door, or there are male guests at the house I am covered - other than that I do not cover my hair.

- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us? :look:
Male relatives are allowed to see my hair - this does not include male cousins, brother in laws, or uncles by marriage. As for the second part of the question, can I show you what?

- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories?
Of course I do - hijab is not a uniform, it is my ultimate accessory. My outfits are designed around the hijab I pick for that day. I shop for clothes so that they do not distract from the hijab.

YESS!!! Woohoo! OK....

- How covered are you? The parts of my skin that show are my hands and face.
- How is your hair styled underneath? Pretty much whatever. I wear a lot of buns and/or twists. PS, PS, PS!
- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture? I've started just wearing a satin bonnet underneath since I used to wear an underscarf under my hijab. A lot of that material I use is cotton so it sucked the living life outta my hair.
- How much of the day are you uncovered? I'm only covered when I'm out and in front of dudes outside of my family. As soon as I walk through the door at home, I take it off (presuming there aren't any male guests over).
- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us? Ladies, kiddies and some male family can see. I can't show you but I can assure you all that I'm not bald.
- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories? I'm not a PJ but I'm a hijab junkie. So many scarves to go with different outfits. It all coordinates.

HTH. I'm glad you're interested. I love when people ask questions instead of assuming.

- How covered are you? Def. not covered enough. Inshallah, I'll get there one day
- How is your hair styled underneath? I wear my hair out. In the rare instance I have worn hijab, it's braided underneath.
- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture? I think it depends on the material. Most hijabs I have are silky type material.
- How much of the day are you uncovered? Only when I wear my head scarf around the house. Never out.
- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us? :look: I'm shown in my avatars. But, for the most part the only ones who should be allowed is children, females, hubby, and family in gatherings.
- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories? A few, but I def. need more. I'll get there!

I love seeing the responses from my Muslimah sisters! My goal is to start covering more and live my life the way I'm supposed to. Inshallah, I'll get there, sooner than later. He knows my struggles - and supports me!

OP, thanks for the thread!

nasdaq diva, i make dua (pray) to allah swt he enables u with the strength to cover, truly its a big trial for many sistas in this society, u will get there 1 day insha allah.
yours in da deen.....yasmeen XxX

Thank you for posting and thank you very much for your replies ladies. I don't personally know anyone who follows Islam so I appreciate your answers.

My SIL and neice are Muslim, they bun. My neice loves to have braids and designs in the front although not very many people see them. My SIL is very covered she wears the hijab and the nikab(sp) Only her hands and eyes show. He daughter only covers her hair, ears and neck. My neice wears pretty colorful scarves but she is 11. Not sure if her age has something to do with it but my SIL only wears all black.

I peeked in the title of this thread and I was soooo hoping you were asking what I always wanted to know and you were.

Can I please add a question?? Are you allowed to wear any colors you want?

there are issues of modesty - always about modesty. Colors sure, patterns sure, shapes sure; however, given the purpose of hijab is to detract and not draw attention to one's self, there are some things I would not wear.

Very nice thread. I see so many different styles from different countries...it seems like every country has their own twist to the scarfs :)

Waiting for more responses...

A lady that I met today that chose to wear a fluffy cap to cover her hair. It looked cool.

I am muslim born muslim but me and my family are not strict devout muslims (We are Nigerian so our Nigerian yoruba culture comes 1st to us). I don't wear a hijab or cover my hair at all (only at night or if I am not bothered to make my hair look all pretty or if I am entering a mosque)If I do cover my hair the material is usually silk or satin.

My mum covers her hair though half religious and half not wanting to do her hair so fancyfull becasue it takes too much time.

Thanks for asking this! This is a great thread. I run into a few Muslims, but I'm always too shy to ask.

Just a random point I wanted to make: There are some Muslim sistahs I see on campus with some gorgeous Hijab's!!! They got their patterns and textures down to a science! I love it! And I love this thread, I'm always down for the different cultures in the diaspora getting to know each other better!

- How covered are you?

3abaya, hijab, niqab :) my eyes and hands show.

- How is your hair styled underneath?

Buns or a few big braids that get pulled back into a bun. Sometimes I wrap my hair, too.

- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture?

No, but underscarf caps that go under the sheyla (if you prefer to wear one) can be tricky. I never wear the tie back ones, and I try to always put a layer of lace on first. It's a little lace headband that is great for preventing frizz, and holding baby hairs in place.

- How much of the day are you uncovered?

It depends on what type of 3abaya and hijab I am wearing that day. If it's a plain 3abaya and pashmina or something stretchy that I wrapped without pins then I could literally wear that all day. Most of my 3abaya though are heavy cuz I'm addicted to Swarovski crystals so they come off like, immediately. I have a hook on my front door, actually cuz otherwise I'd throw them on the couch lol.

- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us?

ma7ram (family), blood and rada (milk). other females too, but some people are even still very reserved about that. if you were in my house you'd see my hair, that's pretty much how it goes. my friends and family do.

- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories?

I have an embarrassing amount of hijabs actually :( I give them away allllll the time cuz as a Muslim person I feel like I have too many belongings so sometimes I feel bad about it. I always like to match my sheyla to my 3abaya in one way or another. Whether it's pattern, color, crystals, or an exact match.

Can I please add a question?? Are you allowed to wear any colors you want?

White was Prophet Mohamed's favorite color for garments and he was also very fond of green... Aisha wore garments dyed in very vibrant colors such as saffron... the wives of the companions were said to cover and look like crows... which is where a lot of people get the black-only thing from. Personally, I will wear whatever color shayla I want, but I would never wear an 3abaya that was anything other than black outside and all my veils are black. I have jalabiyyah for inside the house, and those are like pretty silky colorful kaftans but for indoors or entertaining guests, only.

Also, many people confuse the Nation of Islam with Muslim and it's not the same thing. It's entirely entirely different so their ways of observing purdah or modesty in general... is different because they believe differently than Muslim people.

I learned about the Nation of Islam on a whim one day, I never knew it existed until about 4 or 5 years ago.

As for myself:

- How covered are you? I just wear a large square headscarf always tied in the back - I kind of make like a bun shape if that makes sense
- How is your hair styled underneath? I normally have my hair in a bun - ponytail sometimes but I try to wear a bun - my ends are chugging along
- Do your coverings dry your hair out or do they help retain moisture? well I did not start covering till around 14 or so. I recall my hair was dry before that lol. I think my hair is just dry in general. I make sure to moisturize my hair every day or I skip a day - normally with hemp oil sometimes castor oil.
- How much of the day are you uncovered? I cover when I go out side my home to work etc. so about 10-11 hours a day. At home with family I do not cover cept when I eat
- Who is allowed to see your hair? Can you show us? I was taught to cover around men non family - I could show other women my hair
- Do you have different hats/scarves for various outfits, accessories? I have a huge assortment of scraves all different colors. I have fall scarves and very bright scarves for spring/summer. I try to make sure everything matches - I don't want to look crazy.

You don't happen to go to a rather super large school in Columbus, do you?

As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, ladies! I didn't know there were so many of us on here.

Can I just say that this is a great thread...it's so cool to find out the nuances of how ladies of all cultures/religions care for their hair.

Another Muslimah checking in!

I'm on my phone so I won't copy and paste but here goes:

I cover my hair neck and ears and wear long sleeves and dresses/pants/skirts to my ankle or longer.

I cover outside my house and if male visitors are over.

I have WAY too many scarves (smh) in all colors and designs.

I wear a multitude of style of clothing from Indian to Moroccan to Somali etc.
