So after this thread and video about wet flat ironing the hair, I decided to try it. So I washed my hair with poo (Dove Intense Moisture for Damage Hair w/ Repair Serum Shampoo) with one lather, then conditioned for 5 mins in the shower with Aphogee 2 min Reconstructor mixed with Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner.

I let my hair airdry for about 15-20 mins, it was still a bit damp. Before airdrying I applied a little bit of Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Leave in, a drop of Chi Silk Infusion, and Potion 9. For extra protection I sprayed juuuust a bit of Tressemee Heat Tamer Spray.

I sectioned my hair into small sections about 1 inch in width. I set my flat iron to 320 degrees (on my flat iron it was the 3rd section). Any lower than that my hair didn't dry as well. When I flat iron my hair after blow drying I normally set it on the second setting of 278 degrees.

Before using the flat iron I ran over the small section with my rat tail comb. I passed over 2-3 times with the iron depending on how wet the hair was. I heard VERY MINIMAL sizzling actually... You've got to watch out for the steam because you can burn your scalp. So it's best to do this with DAMP hair, about 50-70% dry. In between the second or third pass, I would just run over the section with the comb one more time to make sure the strands were separated fully so the heat could be evenly distributed. I did my whole head and the results were AMAZING. My hair looks so thick and full of life. It was extra light weight and moves with the wind (see the SWANG pics). And I can't believe how moisturized my hair actually looks and FEELS. I will surely be breakin my neck from all the flipping I WILL be doing tommorow... :lachen::grin:

This is definitely a keeper for me.

This whole process took me less than an hour from start of the flat iron to finish!

Your hair looks absolutely beautiful......and you gotta love that swang...I'm definitly gonna try this.

Thanks for the regimen, pics, and putting all the back and forth about wet to straight in the other threads to rest...GREAT JOB GIRL!!!!

lol thanks ladies. So funny how I'm so willing to be a ginuea pig, hehe. But hey what can I say, I'm a SUCKER for straight hair.... Straight HEALTHY hair that is!

Your hair looks good....but I just don't know 'bout this using a hot flat iron on wet hair thang especially on the regular.

Are you getting more swang than usual?

Actually yes because my hair feels a lot lighter and more moisturized. I use the same products as any other time, only difference is the fact that no blow dryer is involved (and for me the elimination of the round brush for that process as well).

I did some further research before doing this too... Apparently almost every wet to dry flat iron says to make sure your hair is about 90% dry or so before flat ironing. So they are saying that your hair shouldn't be SOAKING wet. I think that's where the major problems likely come in. Also you should ENSURE that your flat iron says that it is in fact tourmaline AND ionic. You shouldn't be doing this with a regular flat iron. Again, I had pretty much no sizzling at all. And the hair was actually COOL to the touch afterwards (and still is).

It may not be for everyone, but now that I've actually tried it, I can tell it isn't anymore worse than any other heat usage. I think it wise for one to discern if their hair can take it. If your hair is healthy, then you likely won't have a problem. If you need to work on the health of your hair, you shouldn't be using direct heat anyways. For the one time a week I flat iron, this method seems to be a good thing as an alternative to what I normally do.

Oh here are a few items that you may find interesting if you are looking for more info, I had a few other links but I closed them, these two were still open.

Here's a question though. It's the steam everyone is so worried about with this technique... Which in turn supposedly causes bubble hair... But what about the Maxiglide which actually USES STEAM to straighten... You are still using moisture to help straighten... And then what's to be said about things like Caruso rollers, which many a LHCF'er swears by, including myself... Steam treatments as well... I think that technique, products, and the tools you use will make all the difference in the world with this.

Foxy you got that swang on lock! I need some swang like that in my life.

Thanks for the review, glad you had great results.:yep:

So.......Pantene hit you up yet for any commercials?:look:

wow! very good to know. what flat iron do you use?

Your hair looks nice. Now do tell what kind of flat iron did you use and where did you get it?

I am thinking of doing this tonight but on barely damp hair. Does anyone know if I can use a chi?

Your hair does look beautiful in those pics. I want swang. If you continue to do this, please share if the results stay the same or if the health of your hair is affected for the better or worse. thanks

Thanks ladies. I woke up this morning and undid my pin curls and my hair is still extremely bouncy and really fully looking! Lots of body, and not dry.

I did not use a specific wet to dry flat iron. In fact my favorite flat iron is sort of a knock off Chi. It's called the Tyche 1.0 Tourmaline/Ionic Flat Iron. The width is 1 inch, hence the 1.0. I also have the 1.75 one, which is a little bigger. It has 5 heat settings, and I normally hang out on the lower settings and get amazing results.

I purchased them in Brooklyn at the BSS over on Fulton off of Dekalb (next to KFC). That's just a little tip for all you NYC ladies. It cost $40 for the larger one, and $30 for the smaller one I think.

Sure thing. All the research I've seen thus far seems to point to the fact that bubble hair is in fact caused by excessive amounts of heat. Furthermore it is seen when METAL irons are used that don't have a ceramic or tourmaline coating. It is also seen when high heat from a blowdryer is applied extremely close to the hair itself. I think the key with this method, which is a better way of using a heat tool since you are essentially cutting out the step of blowdrying, is again to use ceramic and even better, tourmaline, irons because they turn the potential positive charge of your hair post washing to a more neutral state. These specific irons have an entirely different way of effecting hair than metal irons, and are less damaging in that way. Additionally, you likely stand less of a change of damage by making sure you do still somewhat dry your hair. Again all the specific wet/dry irons still say the hair should be somewhat dry and not soaking wet...

Why do it this way instead of fully drying... Well that's totally an individual choice. You're still using heat either way and heat as we know can damage the hair if used improperly, no matter what method you choose. I definitely think any heat should be used after a good conditioning wash only (either via DC or using an amazing conditioner for a co-wash), and to ensure you use a moisturizing leave-in as well as a heat protectant to further protect your hair. This method just shows that your hair may not explode and fall off as we may have thought. My hair tends to be ok with heat usuage, this is just another styling option.:yep:

But again use caution, because this is not for everyone, and again if your hair isn't already in a healthy state, I'm not sure I'd try this.:nono: Or any direct heat at all...

At first I was totally against this but I have to say thanks for stepping up and giving clarity for the relaxed heads because it was not clear before.I can totally see the benefit of this if the hair is 90% dry even 75%.At first it was more naturals chiming in and that video hair was soaking wet and I wasn't feeling that.My hair is double processed and just got it healthy from damage and breakage so I have to be careful I've made amazing progress in short amount of time so I question everything before I just jump on it.Great results!

Beautiful results! I use the same method and yeah watch out for the steam. I learned the hard way :lachen:

I'm going to try this tonight, but i'm going to rollerset it first just to smooth it out a bit. I'll post my results tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I am glad you got great results!!

I have always flat iron my damp hair with no problem, I think the heat seals in some of the moisture. I usually wait until my hair is about 75-80% dry, not sopping wet.
