Natural 4s, how do you trim?

It's time for my annual big trim - not dusting.

Last year was my first one (year 1 of hair care) and at that time I did not have many kinks but more heat damage so that rat tail comb glided more than it would today FOR SURE.

This year, I can't envision that rat tail comb gliding through my natural hair in the least bit (unless he leaves-in a conditioner with cones in). My hair is very fine but I have a lot of it (which why it appears thick).

How should I get my big trim this year? Or, how do YOU trim?

I trim with my hair dry-twisted. I band the hair to stretch it out while it dries. Once it dries I twist it up, trying to make the twists medium to small in size.

Once twisted, I snip off a little bit of the crunchy ends from each twist.

This has lead to some parts of my hair being somewhat uneven though as some parts on my head are more prone to dryness and crunchy ends than other parts.

I trim with my hair straightened, I can't do it any other way because then there would be no guarantee of the eveness with all the lumps waves and kinks in my hair.

I have done it 2 ways.


1) After braiding my hair to wear for the week, cut the bad looking ends.

2) blow dry the hair. Seperate into sections and trim off the fuzzy/crunchy part.

I don't trim or dust often.

To avoid the bolded, I would prefer going to a stylist for a trim, however... I think I need to make some decisions first. For example, if I decide to not straighten my hair until next year, then I don't have to worry about uneven ends THIS year. By next year, my hair will have grown out more and the stylist could give me a shape up once the hair is blow dried.

I snip off wispy bits when I twist my hair. I have no idea how even/uneven my hair really is, but lets hope not too much!

I used to twist and snip but after going to a stylist in January/Feb. I'm thinking I'll just go back to her. I didn't judge my ends properly and always ended up taking off way more than I should have.

Before I left Charlotte for Atlanta, I found a stylist who actually knew the meaning of a TRIM. But, because I was scared of heat damage, I would blow dry/straighten my hair before going in for the trim. I felt like she might try to get my hair bone straight, and I didn't want that. As soon as I got home, I'd wash it and get the kinks back. When it was shorter I trimmed it myself.

I didn't take the time to find anyone in Atlanta to do it, so I had a friend do it, but last spring she gave me a "cut", not a "trim" (which was my intention, lol). I don't know what I will do once it grows out again.

I'm considering doing the first thing.

Just today, I asked someone from work (might be a bad idea actually) who used to be a stylist if she would trim my hair!

The only way I would allow my stylist to trim my hair while straight, is if I straighten it myself using Pinkskates blowdrying method or air dry in plaits. I don't trust him with the little rat tail comb on my damp hair with NO products I did consider trimming while in twists and the stylist can go through each twists if he'd like but not with lose hair.

You know what I'll do, I'll go to the salon and give him some options and see what works for the both of us! I wonder if he'd consider using a medium sized comb and not that small rat tail?
