I wouldnt clarify before a perm. Leave you hair a bit dirty/coated. You should clarify after. I like ORS aloe. .

ETA: Do NOT clarify before a perm.

I like ORS Creamy Aloe. A lot of people also love Nexxus Aloe Rid, but you get Sally's GVP version which is the same thing, only cheaper :D

I like to clarify before relaxing because there's no product buildup to get in the way of the relaxer processing. My hair gets straighter this way, just how I like it :yep:

Great thread! I have some pantene that is too astrigent and drying for my hair.

Tiffers, you're my hairspiration!!! I will try your recommendation! Thanks!!!!!

a conditioning shampoo i may can stomach, but a clarifying one before a relaxer :nono::nono::nono: I still wouldnt do either.

Trust a relaxer will get through just about any normal amount of gunk. We are talking about something that can give your scalp a 2nd degree burn.

Because of the tips I have recently picked up on this site, I'm thinking you should not clarify before the perm. The last time I self relaxed, after I got through the relaxing process, I then washed my hair again with Suave Clarifying shampoo to get off the relaxer "residue". I can't really explain it, but my hair felt silkier than when I've self relaxed before and didn't do this.

i've noticed that clarifying a few days before a relaxer helps the results come out more evenly and controlled, and it didn't burn at all versus in the past when relaxing dirty hair. Now I wash my hair 2 days before relaxing with no problems.

Clarifying can help get a more even, straighter result (see Sistaslick's articles regarding relaxer re-touch prep). If you do so, I think you should use a mild clarifier like Kenra clarifying or the one by L'anza. Sulfates (I just mean the ALS/SLS variety) that close to a relaxer might backfire on the scalp.

In any event, don't forget to base well

Regardless of how or when you do it, I recommend Aveda Hair Detoxifier. It's around $9.50, and It cleanses my scalp and hair without drying it out like most clarifiers.

A lot of people on the board clarify before relaxing. LHCF is where I got the idea from :ohwell:

I get uniform, perfect results when I clarify vs. when I don't. As we all know, everything isn't for everybody. A lot of people clarify first with no problems. Do you :yep:

Joytimes10, thank you so much! I'm so honored to be your inspiration  :hug2:

Shadylane, GVP is the truf! I lurve it! I still need to try the Aloe Rid, IDK why I keep putting it off...

Oh, I forgot about Dove Beautifully Clean and Herbal Essences Drama Clean. I don't remember how I felt about the Drama Clean, I used it a looong time ago. But I did like Dove Beautifully Clean :yep:

I've also heard good things about Redken Cleansing Cream, if my memory serves me correctly, it also chelates :)

I have the HE Drama Clean; it's ok, but it leaves my hair super dry afterwards...I know it's a clarifier but good grief, my hair feels like sand paper...so i opted for the hair detoxifier which is just as good without the drying feeling...
