Newbie needs suggestions on roller setting at home

Hello, ladies !
I just had my very first roller set done at a salon and I absolutely loved the results ! I want to try duplicating it at home and was hoping yall could give me suggestions on the type of dryer I should look for and the name of the rollers (does it matter ?) and anything else I might need.

1. If this is your first time, try it on a day when you have plenty of time and if it doesn't come out how you like, you can start over. When there is less pressure to wear your results in the outside world, it goes a little better.

2. I have both mesh and magnetic rollers. I would suggest that you start out with the magnetic rollers. It's a little easier to use the clips to hold your hair. The pins that come with mesh rollers can be a little tricky.

3. After you do your final rinse, don't dry your hair. It's a little messy and uncomfortable, but I find that soaking wet hair results in a better set.

3. Don't use too much product. I would suggest a serum and maybe a leave-in. If you're using a creamy leave-in, apply a nickel size amount of the serum and leave-in to the palm of your hand. Mix them together and then apply to your hair. I find that if i mix the products together first, I use less. Start with a small amount. It's easier to add more than it is to fix an overload.

4. There are a couple of tutorials for actual rollersets. Try Macherieamour and several others. They have lots of pictures of roller placement.

5. As you go, make sure you don't let yor hair dry out. Keep a spray bottle of plain water nearby to rewet sections

6. Once you get under the dryer, make sure the hair is completely dry before you remove the rollers, otherwise it might frizz and lose the curls. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes for your hair to completely cool. Once it cools you can tell if there are wet spots still.

7. Sometimes I like to wrap my hair after I remove the rollers. This is called a doobie or rollerwrap. Some people wrap their hair, cover it in saran wrap and then go back under the dryer for approximately 10 minutes. This gives a lot of shine and smoothness to the hair. It loosens the curls, but your hair will still have body.

I'm sure I've forgotten something but I hope this gets you off to a good start. It takes a patience and trial and error - but once you get it, it's so worth it.

I use a Gold N Hot dryer (table top), but I'm looking to purchase a Pibbs dryer to cut my drying time down.

they cost about $300.00

Your hair is BEAUTIFUL ! I already bookmarked your step by step roller set instructions on your fotki page ! What is the wattage on your Gold n Hot ? I saw some for sale for around $40 - is that a good product or do I need to spend more $$ ? And I think the wattage was 1400-1600. I definitely am not ready to spend $300 because I don't know if I will be able to keep it up.

This is the dryer I have, it's 1200 watts. But it's direct heat whereas the Pibb is a rotating type heat that dries all the hair at the same time.

I thing the tabletop will be the best for you now until you decide if this is something you want to maintain.

i'm sitting here with 1/3 of my head undone - my arms literally feel like they're gonna fall off. it's the back section - i guess that's why i'm feeling overwhelmed.

I gave it a try yesterday. I bought an Ion pink hard bonnet dryer that was on sale at Sally's. The bad thing is that dryer did not fit my whole head. Or else my head is just too big. Also Sally only had the purple rollers and my hair is not that long so I need some smaller rollers. So it was diificult to dry the back of my head, because the dryer did not cover that part. And I used Lacio Lacio as a leave in, that was it.

I was thinking of ordering that gold n hot soft bonnet off of eBay.

How my hair came out - the roots were not straight at all and of course, the back wasn't either. So I ended up flat ironing it only because I had a date that afternoon. But my hair is shiny and moisturized (I also did a henna treatment the night before). Even this morning my hair is still shiny and mositurized (probably the henna ).

Once I get a better dryer. I will follow the advice on here and do it on a day when I have nothing to else to do.

Stinastina--Your experience was my experience to a TEE. I did the exact same things last night, with the same results ... pink ion dryer (on sale) from Sally's, gray sized rollers instead of purple (that was okay) , thick roots, wavy back, finally gave up and used flat iron ... hair was soft, but I don't know how long it will be with continued flat iron use!

I didn't attribute the results to the dryer, though-- that would be a shame since I just dropped $40 on it. I'm hopping it was my technique and that it will get better with time.

And I just left there ! Oh, well, I can always use an excuse to go back !

I'm pretty sure my technique was bad but I had to crane my neck to try to dry the back and I'm not going to go through that everytime I want to dry my hair !

I found the Gold n Hot soft bonnet at an asian beauty supply store. It was $40 but the guy was really nice and took $4 off. It works really good but I have yet to perfect my technique. So for now, I will use it for deep conditioning, etc., and go to the Dominicans if I REALLY want it done right. I think you guys have a talent for it that I am severely lacking !

Is your hair natural or relaxed ? I love that Amla oil, too, that you have in your fotki album. Do you use it everyday ? I use Lacio Lacio during the day and WGO at night but I may try the Amla oil during the day, if it's okay to use it daily.

I'm texlaxed. I use the Amla oil only as a prepoo but I used the amla lite almost nitely. I see no reason why you couldn't use the Amla Oil daily.........oh, yes I do, THE SMELL.

I was thinking yesterday I smelled like an Indian lady !! I don't mind the smell so much, but then today my son told me my pillow stinks ! Well, I will probably just use it at night and wash it out in the morning.

Ok I am lost with this (I saved it ofcourse ) but the part where it says that the roller cant be longer than the length and the width wider than the width of the hair. OK the width makes sense bc you will have har hanging off the sides. The length I am confused about. Can you or anybody explain it bc I think this may be my problem with my roller sets. I use the purple plastic mesh rollers but this makes it seem like I need bigger ones? Can anybody help me with the back of the hair...would a bonnet help with that?
