Should I buy Mr. John's book. Does it have any worthwhile info in it. I am still wearing my weave but after Jan 15th, I am taking it out. I can't take the itching...no matter what it do it is itching....it's driving me crazy....SO! I am going to start pressing my hair again and now that I have a flat iron that I really like(Thanks VG!)I can't wait to press my hair. I just want to know what you ladies think. Also, what do you ladies use to press with, I am out of WGO and Hair Culture Solution.

Let me first say that I am not a big supporter of pressing your own hair. I have had a set back before from using too much heat and had to get a few inches cut off. But you may be a better presser than I was, so in saying that here are my few suggestions before moving forward...

1. Make sure you DEEp CONDITION your hair before pressing

2. Use a Light pressing sheen or nothing at all. Never use grease!

3. Always test the comb on a cloth before putting it on the hair

4. Try not to comb thru (with pressing comb) more than twice. Press in medium sections.

Thanks for the tips. What type of pressing sheen do you suggest I use? I have never dry pressed my hair ( I have been pressing it off and on for 9yrs. How would I do that?

I think you may get many different opinions on Mr. John. I personally have his book and found several things he said that were helpful to me.

1. Press the hair from the ends up
2. Curling the ends under.

Now that I know what he said about mositure, I don't know if I agree with it. The thing is YOU and only YOU can make the decision on how to use information that people write about or give out. I believe any information that will help you to better understand and deal with your hair is always helpful. You have to take in the information with a grain of salt and weed out what doesn't work. The book is $13.95, which isn't too much of a loss if you don't like it.

I personally thought the pressing comb wasn't good for my own hair and probably had to do with my own skill in handling it. I did better with a curling iron that has a temperature setting to control the heat. I also noticed less split ends. I wish my mother was here because she can definately press some hair. /images/graemlins/grin.gif I recently switched to a ceremic flat iron and it works even better.

I did learn something from Mr. John that I tried recently and it work! I explained to him about the problem I was having when I did use the straightening comb and how it seemed to pull my hair out from the roots. He said the reason was that the heat wasn't consistent. He said that many of his clients do their hair at home with success.

Here's the thing that he said do that I tried.

Purchase 5 Gold n Hot pressing combs. Put them on temperature 17. Let them heat up for 30 minutes. Use one pressing comb for four strokes. Go to the next one. You are alternating the combs and not allowing them to lose the heat. When they lose the heat, they pull out the hair. That's the key to getting really straight hair without damage. The heat from each comb is consistent and it works. I went and purchased the five straightening combs and tried it and was amazed at how the concept worked. I was just annoyed with all the wires, but still don't want to use the combs because I HAVE BECOME LAZY and the one curling iron seemed simple...one thing to plug up, one or two strokes.

I have never used the hair culture but was told by my ex beautician in Chicago that it was good to use. I have used the Dudley's Cream Press, KMS Flat out Balm and Wanakee hair oil.
 
I also would take caution when pressing hair. I got my hair pressed professionally after 8 months, and now there is a section of my hair that is now 2b like Chili's but 3C/4A everywhere else. What you can do is try the Jubilere (I think I'm spelling that right) flatiron which goes for about 40 bucks.

The investment is worth it. I can get my hair is straight as a relaxer or good press, but without the damage. If you do a search on it you'll hear good things about it. Well, after my stylist deep conditions my hair, she simply blow dries and then she presses. the way she presses eliminates the need for sheen.

I have a couple questions for you. You mentioned you use Nexxus botanic oil. How does it compare to WGO or kemi oyl? Can you rate it out of 10 on its softening qualities. And also, do you think the KMS flatout will get my hair straighter without blowdrying. If I put it in my hair then flatironed or must I blowdry? Thanks /images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Hi Faith,

I can only compare the Nexxus oil to the WGO, I never used the Kemi Oyl. The Nexxus oil didn't seem to weigh my hair down like the WGO did when I used it. It's a much lighter oil and you will have to get use to it if you have been using WGO for a long time. I give it a 8 out of 10.

I think it depends on your hair texture as far as the KMS getting it straighter. I never noticed my hair straighter when I didn't blow dry, but it makes it easier to manage. For me, it gets straighter when I blow dry. I always blowdry on cold and the effect is like using hot (it still gets straight), without the damage and all of the moisture in my hair is not gone.

As far as the KMS is concerned it's also hard to say

Hi Faith,

Both the KMS and Nexxus don't really smell like anything to me. They don't smell bad though, which is a good thing.

You are my hair idol from bhcab on yahoo. I've always wanted to know who you're bomb stylist was - if you don't mind me asking. Please share- what salon do you go to and how did you find them? I want to start pressing my hair when I'm completely natural.

Okay another question....Hairfanatic which one gives you the silker press KMS or the Nexxus? My hair tends to revert faster(because I sweat alot)if I don't get it silky.
 
Hi Faith,

I don't press but I love the Botanic Oil. I haven't used it in a while but I was just looking at it today. The only reason I haven't bought it yet is that I keep forgetting to see if Walmart has it. Why pay $10 when you can pay $6. It gives the hair a nice sheen but is not as gummy or smelly as WGO.

Hi Auntybe,

I like them both because I use them both in combination with each other. After I finish rinsing my hair, I spray a little Giovanni Leave in, then I put a little bit of KMS on my hair and blowdry. After blowdrying, I divide my hair in four sections then put a little oil on each section. Before this method, my hair used to revert all the time, now it doesn't unless I wash it. I really think it's because of the KMS though.

Girl you know the holiday season! Now couple that with having a toddler and you get madness! But things are starting to settle so I think I am here to stay (for awhile at least)

Yep, My sweetie got me the computer so I am happy. Now the problem is finding time to use it when my son is awake! Girl, he demands all my attention!

Feb 14th still stands as the next time I will put heat on my hair and i will def post a pix!

Yes my hair is natural. I usually ( 90% of the time) wear protective styles. On special occassions I get my hair pressed and will wear it down for about a week at the most. there have been times that I have worn it out for about 10 days but my press usually don't last past that.

My regimen is very simple. I wash with creme of nature shampoo and conditon with KeraCare Hemcto conditioner (every other week) and a protein conditoner once a month. I rinse my ahir every day and conditon with Mane and Tail. Then I lightly rinse making sure I leave a bit of the conditoner in. I then spray my hair with Lustra silk Curl Spray and oil my ends with vaseline and Style. That's about it. At night, I braid my hair and wrap with a scarf.

Are you on the No-poo method? You mentioned that you wash and condition every two weeks but also rinse/condition daily?

I'm trying to find other options besides my wash and go bun (oiled/geled{sp} to ends and covered with hair sock and the little beady hair cover thingie), and two flat twist as corporate styles.

No, I do not let my hair air dry. As soon as I get out of the shower, I style my hair be it in a bun, a braid, two braids, whatever. Every now and then, I wear my hair out (curly) but because I am trying to reach my goal this year (close to it) I wear mostly a bun or a braid tucked under.

I have been doing the rinse thing like for-ever! LOL. But I would only last about 3-4 days without washing my hair. It was not until recently that I have decided to do the conditon only wases/rinses. So its been almost two weeks of doing that.

I wish I could give you other style options, but I am also a member of the "same style every day" club. LOL!

What is your hair story?

Yes, I am. I used to post over hear a lot when the board 1st started up but now I am only able to post occasionally. Hopefully, that will change soon.
