I have begun to notice an irritating truth about my hair. I live in Michigan, every summer my hair grows and I retain length. But, every winter, my hair seems to get shorter. Michigan winter has dry, extremely cold air. When I lived in the south my hair was healthy and growing in every season. Now that it's December, I want to break that pattern, but I don't know if I can. Could it be that my hair just doesn't like dry cold climates :cry3:?

Song, do you cover your hair/head during the winter? I never leave my hair exposed in either extreme condition: heat or cold. Also, someone recommended using a humidifier. I have one for my son, don't know that it will make a difference for my hair, but that may be something to consider.

You may also consider some pre-shampoo techniques to retain moisture. For instance, I used to use a concoction of coconut oil, with flax seed oil and a little rosemary oil. I would leave this in my hair for at least a half an hour, then shampoo. My hair was always very soft, supple and retained a lot of moisture.

I live in freezing MA and when I first moved here the winter was pure h*ll on my hair and skin. I always cover my hair before going out in the cold. I'm wearing protective styles and still covering my hair. I drink alot more water and use a humidifier. I deep condition once a week and pretreat with evoo, jojoba and a dash of honey before every shampoo. Being on the bun and baggie challenges have helped save my hair this year.

I have problems with my hair in the winter too. What I have been found working for me lately that u might want to try is S Curl as a moisturizer. I live in FL now and when I tried S Curl back in the summer it was a disaster bc it just attracted the humidity to my hair even more so my hair was looking like a crazy mess (Chaka Khan Chaka Khan). But I just revisited it and its working great.

I was experiencing a lot of shedding and breakage recently and the only thing Ive changed has been using S curl as a moisturizer and it has stopped almost completely. I mean Ive went from getting a handful of hair every time I comb it to getting maybe a few if even that. my hair is super moisturized now. maybe that will work for u too.

Thanx ladies. I will definitely try to cover my hair more! And Webby, I did a pre-treatment tonight ;). But I am having problems with protective styles. It seems that the front of my hair breaks off from wearing it back. One side also breaks off when I wrap it in one direction. I use a medium boar's hair brush to smooth. Could the brush - along with me not covering my hair when it's pulled back - be the cause?

Simplycee, I'll be sure start drinking more water .
Leslie C, do you use S-Curl on your hair wet or dry?

Exactly what kind of protective styles are you wearing. Is is a bun? If so, make sure it isn't pulled back so tightly that it breaks hair off. Shifting the bun to different locations (up, low, side) also helps. There are many protective styles to wear and it can be fun.

I personally don't use brushes, just a wide toothed seamless comb. Others may have better advice about your brush.
