Protective style suggestions/HELP!

I am having a hard time finding a protective style. I've tried braidouts with no success. I'm very self conscious about my phony pony looking "too phony". I tried bantu knots and it looked okay (stress on the "okay"). My hair is weird. It is right at shoulder length in the front and the back is a little shorter than that. What else can I do?
 
I don't like phony ponys and buns either. The always look too fake for me.

I pin my hair up with clips. I make sure the ends are moist and hidden inside.

I used to use a clip on hair extension for even more protection, but I stopped a few months ago.

I am going to start back up using it again because my hair did well like that. It really protected my ends well.

Basically, I part my hair all the way around starting with about a 2 inch wide piece of hair near my ear. Then I clip the clip-on extension to the bottom section (not damaging at all). Then I lay the top portion of my hair down on top to hide the weft. Then I take it in my hand as if I am going to put it in a ponytail but twist it up to clip. My ends are hidden and protected and it looks natural.

I put it up using a medium sized one of these (it never touches my own hair).

With the phony ponies I usually only use the ones with the spiral curls that are soft. They look real and are soft and not super shiy. I also wear them in a low ponytail because up it looks too fake. Also I cant wear the straight styles because I like to wear my ponytails down and the inside part makes it look bulky. I would suggest using a soft curly one or a straight one wrapped in a bun. Some ppl know how to take the shine out but I just search hard until I find one that doesnt look too shiny. You just have to shop around until you find the "perfect" one for you. Also you can try the instant weaves (by Sensationnel or Ultra), those can come out really nice with some practice.
 
I just moisturize the ends, and then twirl the hair into a good old-fashioned bun, either on top of my hair or in the back. I make sure the ends are tucked in, and then i secure the bun with bobby pins. Simple, cute, and totally protective. :)

When you say clip on hair extensions what do you mean? Like these: http://www.instanthair.net/products/products.asp?catID=59

I have these ( got them off ebay) and absolutely love them. I would def. suggest them. The only thing I am not sure about is if they damage your hair after extended use. I put them in daily and take them out every night. Im not sure if I would advise to leave them in. I only wear them on special occasions when I want to wear my hair down.

Yes I use just one piece to be able to easily put my hair up. I never wear it down because I never use my entire set. I got a yaki set from Ebay Seller "HairArt".

I put it in in the morning after I have moiturized my hair. Then I remove it when I get home before I moisturize and tie my hair up at night.

Where do you purchase your ponies from? Have you (or anyone) every ordered from hairsisters.com?

Nope. I just go BSS hoppiing and get the ones I like the most. If you live in NYC I would suggest the BSS on 125th and Lenox or the one on 35th and 8th Ave.

I only use the two back pieces and it usually comes out nice. I ordered a color too dark so I put a rinse in my hair this weekend and I think next week I am going to start using them everyday. Either this or the instant weave by sensationnel if I can ever get one that fits me right.

There's also another one on 32nd street b/w 6th and 7th Aves.

yeah I was gonna suggest that one too but I never saw the ponytails only wigs. They are also super expensive. The one on 35th is more normal priced.

What is an instant weave? No, I don't live in NY. I live in Fla-bama...
The town I live in is very little. I have yet to have seen a hair store besides Sally's. There are only 2 black salons that I know of and both look pretty suspect...

I think I am going to check out some of those instant weaves, as well. I hear good things about them.

Yeah that one on 32nd is really expensive! They have a few ponytails but not many.
