REAL Black Soap as a clarifying 'poo?

Has anyone ever used homemade black soap to wash their hair? I'm talking about the soap made from plantain skins, shea butter, lye, etc. (Not that fake Dudu-Osun stuff).

I use it everyday on my face and it gives my face a squeaky clean, but not dry, feel to it. I want to try this on my hair if it's better than shampoo.

What a coincidence!!! I was just telling a friend last night that I'm going to wash my hair with the black soap on this Friday. I've been using it on my face since December and I love it! In addition to being a hair product junkine, I'm also a facial product junkie and I refuse to use anything else on my face. My face is so soft! I now have several friends and one sister who use the black soap as a facial cleanser. One friend's co-worker who used the soap for the first time this past weekend, fell in love with it also. She is white so my friend called the company (nasabb.com) to see if it was for AA/Africans only. After she used it, her hubby told her that her skin feels like a baby's bottom. We all are using the shea butter as a moisturizer.

I think she plans to use it as a shampoo as well. If I use it before you do, I will get back with you on Saturday to let you know how it works for my hair. Let me know if you use it before I do.

I don't think it should be a problem. Years ago I used a liquid black soap, the natural kind, on my hair and it was very soft on my hair...unfortunately I stopped using it...I guess PJism got the best of me. You can find it at health food stores.

I use to use black soap as a shampoo before I got my braids and my hair LOVED it. It makes my hair feels so soft. I would use it every other day and my hair literally felt like butta. My mother felt my hair after I shampooed and she raved about how soft it was (she thought that maybe it would feel hard since I was natural). I will definately restart using once I take my braids out. Good luck girls!!!

Matter of fact, yes! I say go for it!

Ok I'm bad but, I ordered 15lbs of the stuff at a time from www.agbangakarite.com. I love it because it dosen't drive my skin all crazy. I usually don't use it on my hair but....

I ran out of my normal stuff that I use to clarify this weekend and wasn't feeling going out to get more right that seconds and so... I ground about 2 cups of the soap then put it in the food processor and mixed it with enough water so that it was the consistency of shampoo.

My boyfriend was looking at me totally weird like. He loves me but you know he's wondering what I'm doing.

Once that part was done I mixed in a tablespoon of acv, 5 drops of peppermint and 5 drops of rosemary oil, mixed it a little bit more and used it.

Now the food processor is really clean...

It will make your hair and scalp really super clean.


Per my usual I only wash once, and I did the same with this stuff, but you could wash twice if you needed to. I did let it sit on my head a couple of minutes before rinsing, and then I rinsed.

as per my normal routine I usually follow it up with Nexxus Ensure or porosity control (whichever is in the house and close by) after the DC, leave on for 2-3 minutes and rinse with cold cold water.

I will probably do it again in about 3-4 weeks because it really was that good.

If the soap is as good to my hair as it is to yours, I just may use the rest of my shampoo on my scarves and make Black Soap my main staple.

I have washed my hair with pure black soap(the real kind of Africa is NOT black, its brown w/lil stuff in it) and it did my hair well. I want to try it again, i think i will. You might want to melt it down some so it will flow better and not get stuck in ya hair. LOL.

ps. when i rubbed my hair it felt squeaky clean. Gotta try it again. Gonna buy some more just because.

I used the black soap on my hair last night and I LOVE it!!! My hair was extremely soft and easy to comb through. Thanks Arcadian for the tip on using the processor and adding water. I didn't add any EO's but maybe I'll try that in another 2 weeks.

I guess I need to open up my trunk and sell all the other poos because this will definitely be my staple shampoo from now on. Plus it's more economical - I only pay $4.50 for a hunk of black soap (www.nasabb.com) compared to the money I spend on other specialty shampoos! My sis said it also helped remove the purple stains left on her scalp from a color job.

I used this a couple of time on my hair. My hair felt good after using it. I was surprise because I was expecting it to make my hair feel dry or stripped down.

I have black soap powder that I just got in & mix it with coconut & olive oils.

It doesn't do a lot of lathering, but it does make my hair & my skin insanely soft!!

I was so surprised!

But it doesn't smell good- it doesn't stink, but it's not 'perfumed', which is ok, bcuz my conditioner (hair) & lotion (skin) takes care of it.

I wish I could use this on my hair. I tried it once and my hair felt very stripped. Maybe I didn't give it a fair chance. I would love to use it for my face too but sadly it didn't work for that either. I have sensitive skin and it was too harsh. My skin would literally sting and burn when I washed with it.

When I had Sisterlocks, I mixed black soap and aloe vera juice to shampoo. Now that I'm not locked anymore, I use the plain soap.

I buy it in bulk. I use a crock pot (only use the pot for this nothing else). I fill the crockpot with the raw black soap and then fill it with distilled water. I put it on low and let it simmer and turn into a liquid. I get a really concentrated soap and I love it because I only have to use a little bit and it goes a long way. Also you get that lather without the super stripped feeling.

Not sure where in Jersey you live, but I was able to find a big a$$ block for $20 at Ho's Market on Main Street in East Orange. (lowest shelf to the right of the cashier's counter)
Other than that, I've ordered from Plant Guru and got two bars for too much, but I really liked the ingredients 1lb for $10.99

I need another source so let me know if you find a good one. I purchase it from Amazon. There is a seller on there that sells in 5 and 10 pound bulks. The 10 pound one is $40. I feel like it's worth it because I bought in January and have not had to purchase soap this year BUT I feel like they are marking the price up so I'd like to try someone else.

I just checked out Plant Guru site and I think I might purchase some oils as well as soap from them. I sent them an email to get the ingredient list for their black soap just to make sure I'm not allergic to anything in it.

It's an African brand of bar soap. A commercial black soap. I kinda like it.
