Anybody used sew-ins to grow long hair?

I've tried this in the past...

I always end up taking the sew-ins out

within a week or so... even though I pay hundreds

of dollars for it... it just feels funny to me.

I didn't take it out properly my ends were a hot mess

and super thin. How do you DC with it?

How do you know the difference between a

good weave-o-logist and a bad weave-o-logist...

should I try this again for the duration of my transition???

I have used sew-ins constantly for the last 3 years and had good results. If you leave the edges out (i learned that the hard way) and be sure to DC and use protein afterwards you results should be excellent. I couldn't have gotten this far any other way. 2005 fotki pics show my starting point. last update was this January.

I too have used sew-ins to help with growth and especailly retaining growth. I usually leave them in for 2 months and I usually achieve 2inches of growth...sometimes 3

As far as deep conditioning ...I admit I dont do...never tried it...I do wash every 1-2 weeks with Creme of Nature and condition with whatever...

As far as picking a stylist...I usually go off recommendations...if you have any friends who have good-looking weaves ask who they go to

Southern Tease, you should check out Reinesse (sp?)..she has grown long thick hair by the use of weaves. Den1 also wears a weave sometimes and retains length via this menthod. Den1 is at top of Bra strap.

I am currently at the top of brastrap. I've cut my hair loads of times too during my hair growth journey. When I am wearing a weave, I don't deep condition. I just make sure that the braids underneath the weave are nice n moist (I use my home made braid spray- ingredients are Rose water/Main n Tail Hair Strengthener/Infusium 23/Glycerine) and the scalp is clean. I try to do gentle scalp massages when I remember. I ALWAYS oil the edges so if the braids are tight, my scalp will feel good. I wash once evry two/three weeks, but in between I spray and cleans my scalp with water/cleansing braid spray. As soo as I take the weave out, I deep con.

Remember, when wearing a weave, you must take consistent care of the hair and scalp underneath.

I wear a weave 99% of the time and also find that this helps retention
of length. I do my weaves myself...I don't feel as comfortable going to salons...plus what's the ponit in spending all that £££ when I can do it my self... ?

Your current length (shown in your Jan 2008 fotki pix) is the length i sooo wanna be.

You will be @ waist length in no time...shoot when I get to your length I'll be claiming Waist length

I just got a half sew in with small braids in the front. I'm using MN every 2 days with some ayurvedic oils. Basically just caring for my natural hair underneath the weave. I told myself I was not going to wear weaves ever again but I gave up. I got tired of my hair since I never did much with it.. So, I allowed myself and my hair a break. I want to wash my hair very badly but it's just waaaayyy too much of a strugle trying to keep this jungle under control.

You see what I'm talking about? I would die trying to detangle this synthetic mess.

I used sew-in's to help w/ my growth. I went from a thin SL to a very thick BSL in about 2 years. They worked well for me!

ETA: Wanted to answer some of your questions
-I DC 1 of 3 ways
1. apply diluted conditioner to the braids and place a cap on, sit under the dryer
2. apply the conditioner and place a warm towel on my hair
3. Pre-Poo! Just squeeze the conditioner on the braids underneath overnight and then gently wash w/ diluted poo and moisturize (I'm starting to like this method the best)

Reniece helped me alot in the beginning of my growth journey. A good weaveologist will make sure that your natural hair is in good condition BEFORE installing the weave. They take the time to detangle your hair, make sure the braids aren't too tight, sew in the tracks properly (improperly done, the threads can pull and break your real hair), and give you great maintenance advice. I went to her for everything; the sew-in, to get it taken down, and to get relaxers treatments and trims. I didn't do anything at home for the most part because I don't have a clue. I used sewins to grow out my relaxer during my transition. For 1 year transtioned and year 2 I grew it out to shoulder length. I just stopped wearing my hair in weaves all the time in November. But I retained length well. Plus the person that did my weaves has been natural for 10 years.

I transitioned wearing a weave for about 8 months? I wore them about 2 months each. They each, they feel funny but my hair grew great. I wasn't really worried about my ends because I knew they were going to get cut off and I knew they wouldn't split all the way up to my new growth. I found that getting vertical, as opposed to horizontal braids, kept my hair in good condition though--so i didnt notice bad ends or weakened hair. I did not DC, i just waited until i took my weave out to DC. Make sure the cornrows aren't too tight or skinny. I know you want it to lay as flat as possible but you don't want it pulling at your scalp.

I pretty much wore my weaves every 2 to 3 months. She would relax my hair after I've worn 2 weaves, sometimes 3 weaves. Then I would take a little break from the weaves after relaxing. I tried to shampoo my hair every two weeks but I ended up getting to it once a month - my hair was fine though! I allowed her to trim whatever was needed for my hair during this time. I was in badddddd shape before going to her so I let her have at it (my hair) lol.

My hair is the healthiest it's EVER been! I didn't think there was much hope for my hair when I first sat in her chair and that's because I had been to so many different stylists who didn't give a dam about my hair. Those stylists gave me whatever I wanted just as long as I was paying even if it wasn't healthy for my hair.

You should be just fine. The main thing is you gotta just let her do her thing. Reniece is the only stylist that I've been to this is hair-obsessed lol. It's nice to have someone be soooo intomy hair like that. She really does all she can to renew your hair and it's not just about pretty weaves. And that's what I love about her. My hair is armpit length and I am amazed.

I was careful in the take down but I was pissed (at first). Now I'm glad I took that mess out. I think for a good weave I will have to pay more. I only paid $145 and I think you get what you pay for (unless you do it yourself).

Ladies, how much are you paying for your weaves?
I'm thinking I need to be prepared to spend at least $300 to $500.

I pay $360.00 its steep but I've had less for more...You know

My person charged me 65 for sewin with hair net and 80 when she washed it for me. But she is not an actual sylist, its just a side gig.

I PAYED $120 AND SHE IS BY FAR THE BEST , IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE EXPERIENCE AND TECHNIQUE. BUT I LOVE THE WAY SHE DOES MY HAIR , IT HAS REALLY HELPED MY FRONT HAIR GROW. WHEN I BEGAN GOING TO HER MY HAIR WAS LIKE 2 INCHES IN THE FRONT , I COULDN;T EVEN SLICK MY HAIR BACK IN A PONYTAIL THAT WAS APRIL 07 AND IT IS NOW UP TO MY CHIN .. BUT THE REST OF MY HAIR IS SHOULDER LENGTH ABOUT 2 INCHES AWAY FROM ARMPIT .. IM THINKING OF GETTING A FULL WEAVE TO STRETCH TILL JUNE 08 , I THINK THAT WOULD HELP ME GET TO APL.

A good weave in Los Angeles is going to set you back at least $600 or one of the following (1) months car note and insurance on a BMW 3 series (2) rent for a 1 bed room apartment in a mid-America or southern town (3) a flight from NYC to London (4) or 2-3 treatments of permanent laser hair removal

Im using weaves to grow out my hair. I used them even throughout my transition even though i wasnt too pleased with the stylist that i was going to but during the transition i would do full weaves with no hair left out. Now im fully natural(1 year and 8 months) and i do leave hair out at the top(its easy for me because my hair easy to straighten but i donot apply heat to my hair all the time either).

I use Extensions Plus hair which can be expensive but it can be reused over again. This is the second time ive used this hair for an install and the hair cost me 260--i believe i purchased it from a member on BHM. The stylist i go to I love her its the same one that Jamiacanlovely goes to also(Shonda) she does the hair of ATL college hill ladies!! she is such a sweatheart!! and she knows what she is doing and very knowledgeable. I was actually able to keep my weave in for the first time last time for 2 month this time im going for 3 months!! I usually pay her about 240 i believe. I'm trying either to go to the end of this year with weaves!!

I'm very low maintenace with weaves i try to condition and spray in between the wefts but its hard because i have a net so its kind of hard getting to the scalp...

i paid 150 + bought my own hair. The first sew in, i shampooed and conditioned once a week.. but i experienced a LOT of build up. So the second sew in, i just rinsed my hair with water once a week (focusing on my scalp) and shampooed with diluted shampoo once a month. That turned out a lot better, and my sew in didn't look as rough and tangled before taking it out, like last time. I retained a LOT of length. I can't wait to get another sew in this summer!

I use sew-ins too. 1/08, I cut my nearly brastrap hair into a chin length bob. After a bad 4/08 trim and the realization there would be no more ponytails or buns, I got a weave. I had great growth. I'm now sporting another one. I wash once a week but use braid/weave spray to moisturize daily and help with the itching! Around the house, I treat it like my own hair and keep it tied up.
