Hey, Lady!
I only use shikaki and alma. I use 1 tsp of shikaki and 2 tsp of amla in my conditioner. I just mixed the powders directly into my conditioner, which can be homemade or store bought. @Aggie is THE PROFESSIONAL!!!!!!

Hi everyone! (This is the process of @kiesha8185 )

I have some tips for some of you that may be having problems with hard hair when using Ayurvedic products. I have finally found a regimen that works for me, so here are some things that I have done that really helped. My hair does not get hard at all anymore when any mixture is in my hair, it is soft the whole way through.

Strain everything.

This sounds like common sense, but my dumb self used these mixtures straight :nono: Since I like to make my own teas, rinses, and oils from powders, it really helps to strain it before you use it.

Use 40:60 ratio of water and oil to make mixtures.

All of the rinses and teas I use in my hair are strained, and heavily diluted with oil and water. I still get the benefit of the powders without getting this stuff stuck in my hair. I tried making pastes but that just does not work at all. The more diluted the mixture, the better. The consistency is very watery.

Add these teas and rinses to oiled hair.

I know a lot of you oil your hair overnight with coconut oil or amla oil. I suggest not washing out the oil before adding the teas and rinses to your hair. It does not prevent the teas/rinses from working, and keeps your hair pliable and easy to work with, acting like a "buffer" against the mixtures.

Big thanks to Whimsy :drunk: She suggested that I do the overnight oil treatment on dry hair as opposed to wet/damp hair. It really does work better. Although my hair uses a lot more oil when dry than when wet, my hair felt much softer doing it this way. Thanks, Whimsy!!

With that being said, here's my regimen. It's very low-maintenance and very very simple.
  1. Apply Ayurvedic oil mixture to dry, dirty hair for 1 hour-overnight.
  2. Apply Ayurvedic wash mixture to my hair for an hour (don't rinse out the oil that was in your hair previously).
  3. Rinse out the Ayurveda wash mixture for 5 minutes with hot water.
  4. Deep condition.
  5. Rinse out with cold water.
  6. Airdry.
I just named them this cuz I dunno what else to call them :look::spinning: Nothing special, just a whole bunch of oils/powders that I mixed together.

Ayurvedic oil mixture: Dabur Amla Oil, Parachute Coconut Oil, Vatika Coconut Oil, Dabur Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Shikakai Oil

Ayurvedic wash mixture: I mix henna powder, indigo powder, amla powder, shikakai powder, neem powder and ritha powder in a bowl, maybe 2 tablespoons of each. Add 3 cups of water and let this sit overnight. The next day, strain it very well and add 2 cups of the Ayurvedic oil mixture. Pour this mixture in a bottle and use it as needed. This last me 6-8 washes. The only time I get in the shower is to rinse out the conditioner, I hate jumping in and out of the shower.

I will be adding more oils and powders as I buy more things :grin: I just get the benefit from everything by mixing them all together, no need to do separate treatments. I hope this helps you guys out.

All of them. I currently have Bhringraj, hibiscus, Amla, Brahmi, Aloe vera Powder, Fenugreek Powder, Rose Petal Powder, Moringa Powder, and Shikakai powder. I have others on the way - Kalpi Tone, Aritha, Neem and Tulsi Powders.

I prefer to make pastes more so than loose rinses although I will use them every now and then. I don't strain my teas/rinses/masks. I do so only if I use fenugreek powder. I don't like fenugreek getting stuck in my hair :nono:. It's the only powder that I can't seem to rinse out easily. All the other powders come out easily.

Thanks @Chicoro. I already do most of what you do with ayurveda. Candy C helped me out a lot when she was a part of this board years ago. I still go back to a lot of her posts. Thanks for placing so many links to those ayurveda threads in here.

You are welcome! I don't do any tea rinsing. That detailed post belongs to a member here on LHCF. I believe the link is right above or below her information. I personally just add the powders to my conditioner. Good luck and happy reading!

All I do is add shikakai and amla. It's a great process but I can't take credit for it. It belongs to kiesha8185, a member here. I think the post I detailed out is what you may be referencing. I thought that was one of the easiest ones to follow so I placed that one in detail but I believe I linked her original post to it either above or below her detailed process!

I have been revisiting Indian powders myself and was in the midst of reviewing all the ayurveda threads here on LHCF when @IDareT'sHair sent me a little note.

@Aggie is being EXTREMELY modest. When it comes to Indian powders and processes, she is one or our resident experts here on LHCF. Her knowledge is deep and wide. But we're not going to bug you, girl!

I think I wanna try Kalpi Tone to see if it darkens the hair? Have a box in a Cart. We'll see if I get it.:look:

Also wanna possibly try/buy Amla and maybe Brahmi.

I keep tellin' myself I don't wanna mess with Powders, but stirring them in to my DC'ers sounds easy enough.:look:

Try adding some amla powder to the kalpi tone @IDareT'sHair. That just might work better than the kalpi tone alone as a paste.

A Quick Suggestion:

-If using Hesh brand, use 50 gr or half a box each of Kalpi Tone and Amla Powder
-Add warm water to make a thick yogurt like consistency
-Add Oil (evoo or evco or any oil you like for that matter, I will be using bhringraj oil most likely) until it's slightly loosened up and free of lumps. Paste should be somewhat runny but not too much.

-You can also add a cheapy conditioner to it as well if you like.
-Add to pre-oiled hair and scalp
-Leave paste/gloss on your hair for about 1 hour with a plastic cap on.

-Conditioner rinse out - no shampooing at this point.
-Deep Moisture Condition with your DC of choice.
-Style as usual

I will be doing both depending on my hair's need, alternating one with the other and sometimes when I don't have much time on my hands, I will mix them with a combination of protein and moisturizing conditioner. Most likely it will be more moisture than protein though.

I thought that the ayurvedic hair care we've been doing on LHCF,since 2007 ,was a copy of Indian ayurvedic hair practices. It's not. This is not a criticism. It's an observation and I prefer the way we [via Candy_C] have changed this process to make it fit our hair.

Most Indian woman make an oil infused with Indian powders, or they make a paste with the powders. They oil their hair and then they wash it and their done. I have not seen any videos where Indian women oil their hair first for the purpose of applying powders and then apply powders. I've only seen Black women do this.

What we do is oil our hair with oil that may or may not be infused with Indian powders, followed by application of a tea, or a paste or some powders mixed into our conditioners. Then we deep condition.

LHCF process = Oil hair [dirty] hair+ apply Indian powders [tea/paste/in conditiner]+ Deep Condtion Hair

Question:
Has anyone seen a video or article where Indian women oil the hair first for the purpose of preparing their hair to receive the powders?

Oh my word! You are so right @Chicoro. I have never seen an Indian woman oil their hair prior to applying the powders/pastes. It has only been black women that are known for this practice. It's not hard to understand why either. Our scalps do not have as much oil as that of a Caucasian or Indian woman. This is so astute of you to notice that. I totally missed it myself. Thanks a million for mentioning it.
